NEW • Distribution Release: SpiralLinux 12.231001 |

SpiralLinux is a selection of desktop spins built from Debian, with a focus on simplicity and out-of-the-box usability across all the major desktop environments. The project's latest release focuses on audio output, touchpad input, and placing reasonable limits on Btrfs snapshots. "For this release all editions of SpiralLinux are now using PipeWire with a proper out-of-the-box configuration for low-latency (5.3ms by default) JACK-compatible live audio applications, even on standard consumer hardware. The default configuration is unique to SpiralLinux and includes overrides to the default PipeWire configuration as well as a number of low-level system tweaks as recommended by rtcqs. This makes SpiralLinux an excellent base system for professional live audio production JACK workflows while simultaneously offering compatibility with normal PulseAudio consumer applications. To take full advantage of the low-latency JACK compatibility simply run 'sudo systemctl enable cpupower' to enable the optimal performance CPU governor." Additional details can be found in the release notes. NEW • Distribution Release: Linux Mint 6 "LMDE" |

The Linux Mint team have announced the launch of a new version of the project's Debian-based branch. The new version 6 (codename "Faye") of Linux Mint Debian Edition offers most of the same technology as Linux Mint's main, Ubuntu-based branch, but using Debian "Stable" as the core operating system. "LMDE is a Linux Mint project which stands for 'Linux Mint Debian Edition'. Its goal is to ensure Linux Mint would be able to continue to deliver the same user experience, and how much work would be involved, if Ubuntu was ever to disappear. LMDE is also one of our development targets, to guarantee the software we develop is compatible outside of Ubuntu. LMDE aims to be as similar as possible to Linux Mint, but without using Ubuntu. The package base is provided by Debian instead. Known issues: to install LMDE on an existing LVM partition you must first remove it from the LVM volumes and groups to which it belongs; in manual partitioning mode, note that the installer will auto-mount all swap partitions, these partitions will also be placed in /etc/fstab in the installed system." The release announcement and release notes offer additional information. Upgrade instructions to assist users migrating from version 5 are also provided. Robert Spiteri has announced the release of Zephix 7, a major new release from a project that develops a small, modular operating system based on Debian's "stable" branch. Zephix 7 is based on Debian 12 and it is available as a set of pre-built desktop modules with several popular desktop environments: "Zephix 7 was released with major enhancements. Updated base to Debian 12.1; heavily redesigned module creation and manipulation scripts; renamed scripts for better convention; added three new scripts - to create a custom core module, to merge two modules together and to extend swap space when building large modules; added the default behaviour to automatically move the newly created modules to the correct location; removed further unnecessary bloat from the final ISO image, reducing size to 380 MB; removed firmware module and instead included a tool named isenkram (this can be used with USB tethering to install required missing firmware)...." KaOS is a rolling release, desktop distribution which is independently developed. The project places a strong focus on providing KDE/Qt software, running on the Plasma desktop. The latest snapshot of KaOS, version 2023.09, will likely be the penultimate release shipping with Plasma 5. "It is with great pleasure to present to you the September release of a new stable ISO. As you will note in this release announcement, work in KaOS is really shifting toward Plasma 6. This ISO is still Plasma 5 based and includes all the latest updates, but Plasma 5 & Qt5 are not where upstream development is anymore. The Fedora project has announced a new beta release of the Red Hat-sponsored distribution. The new beta snapshot, Fedora 39 Beta, is a relatively minor upgrade with a number of proposals (such as an upgrade for the DNF package manager) not completing in time to make it into this release. However, the GNOME desktop and LibreOffice have received significant updates: "The Fedora Project is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Fedora Linux 39 Beta, the next step towards our planned Fedora Linux 39 release at the end of October. Fedora Workstation 39 Beta brings us GNOME 45 (itself also in beta). For everyone who needs a free and open source desktop suite, there’s LibreOffice 7.6. Fedora Cloud images for AWS now default to less-expensive gp3 storage volumes. We also have an update to the GNU Toolchain (GCC 13.2, Binutils 2.40, glibc 2.38, gdb 13.2). Of course, developers appreciate that we include the latest tools, but these updates also include improvements to security and performance that will benefit everyone who uses Fedora Linux."
