The 4MLinux project has released version 48.0 of its lightweight operating system for games, system recovery, multimedia, and network services. Version 48.0 focuses on improving multimedia support: "The status of the 4MLinux 48.0 series has been changed to STABLE. Edit your documents with LibreOffice 25.2 and GNOME Office (AbiWord 3.0.5, GIMP 2.10.38, Gnumeric 1.12.59), surf the Internet with Firefox 137.0 and Chrome 135.0, send emails via Thunderbird 128.9, enjoy your music collection with Audacious 4.4.2, watch your favorite videos with VLC 3.0.21 and SMPlayer 24.5.0, play games powered by Mesa 24.3.3 and Wine 10.4. As always, the new major release has some new features. VVenC (H.266/VVC encoder) has been added to the 4MLinux codec pack. FreeTube (desktop application acting as a YouTube client) and Bristol (synthesisers, electric pianos and organs emulator) are now available as downloadable extensions. And finally, the LTS Linux kernel in 4MLinux has been updated to its version 6.12." The release announcement has further details. Download (MD5): 4MLinux-48.0-64bit.iso (1,485MB, pkglist). |

The OpenBSD team have released OpenBSD 7.7. The project, which places a high priority on secure code and correct documentation, has improved performance in out of memory situations, improved hibernate support, and introduced new userland features: "Various new userland features - numerous changes to make the imsg API stricter and better, which were followed by adapting all applications across the tree. Allow the user to provide an alternative perfpolicy when on battery, extending the semantics of hw.perfpolicy to provide two buttons to specify desired behavior. This gives users more flexibility in setting the performance when AC-powered vs. battery powered. Made calendar(1) use the environment variable RECIPIENT_EMAIL for sending mails to. Made security(8) use GMT rather than the local timezone when checking for changes in device nodes and setuid files. Avoids false positives when changing timezones. Added a new variable PASSWDSKIP that can be set in /etc/daily.local to prevent security(8) from complaining about specific accounts that have no password." A complete list of chances can be found in the release announcement. Download (SHA256, signature, pkglist): amd64/install77.iso (745MB), amd64/install77.img (800MB). |

NEW • Distribution Release: OpenMandriva Lx 6.0 |

Bernhard Rosenkränzer has announced the release of OpenMandriva Lx 6.0, a major update of the project's independently-developed distribution that started as a fork of Mandriva Linux back in 2013. "The independent, community-controlled distribution, OpenMandriva Lx 6.0, a fixed-point release (as opposed to the rolling-release branch), is out right now. Main features: KDE Plasma 6 desktop by default (X11 and Wayland available); community spins featuring the latest desktop environments LXQt 2.2.0, GNOME 48.1, Xfce 4.20.1 and COSMIC 1.0 alpha; this also features the first official stable release of the OpenMandriva Server edition; if you run OMLx 6.0 inside VirtualBox, we strongly recommend using the X11 variant, since there are some known problems with Wayland on VirtualBox-emulated GPU; VirtualBox users may need to set VMSVGA controller to boot successfully; it works fine on most hardware and in QEMU with KVM...." See the release announcement and the release notes for further information. Download (pkglist, SHA256): openmandriva-6.0-plasma6-x11.x86_64.iso (3,078MB), openmandriva-6.0-plasma6-wayland.x86_64.iso (3,079MB), openmandriva-6.0-plasma6-x11.znver1.iso (3,178MB), openmandriva-6.0-plasma6-wayland.znver1.iso (3,179MB). NEW • Distribution Release: CRUX 3.8 |
Rate this project
|
The CRUX distribution is a lightweight operating system with software added through a collection of application ports. CRUX 3.8 is the first release in about three years and features upgrades across the system. "CRUX 3.8 comes with a multilib toolchain which includes glibc 2.40, GCC 14.2.0 and Binutils 2.43.1. Kernel: Linux 6.12.23 (LTS). CRUX 3.8 ships with X.Org 7.7 and X.Org Server 21.1.16. CRUX 3.8 includes Wayland 1.23.1. Ports continue to default to X.Org, but Wayland can easily be installed along and run in either pure Wayland or Xwayland mode. If you decide to run a Wayland session, you will need to enable the 'contrib' collection and rebuild a few ports (for example xorg/mesa) to make it fully available. The ISO image is processed with isohybrid and is suitable for burning on a DVD or putting on a USB drive. UEFI support is available during installation with dosfstools, efibootmgr and grub2-efi/syslinux available during installation. Because all bootloaders are in our opt collection now, no bootloader is installed as a core port by default. To give the possibility to select a bootloader, we have added a new menu to setup. Important notes: glibc depends on libxcrypt now, we have added libxcrypt to our core repository; latest shadow depends on libbsd or libmd, we have added both to core...." Additional information is provided in the release notes. Download: crux-3.8.iso (1,672MB, SHA256, pkglist). |

Amy Eickmeyer has announced the release of Edubuntu 25.04, the latest stable version of the project's official Ubuntu variant designed to bring the freedom of the Linux desktop and the vast library of open-source education software into the classroom. "We are glad to let you know that we've released Edubuntu 25.04 and we've replaced some of our apps that were no longer supported with similar applications so you can still get the same wonderful experience. New features: this release includes GNOME 48; for Qt-based/KDE apps, we now include themes via Kvantum, mostly as a workaround for the inability to change the accent color in those applications; this theme is based on GNOME's libadwaita, on which the default Ubuntu theme (Yaru) is based; GNOME Notes is dead upstream, for that reason, we have switched to the resurrected GNote; likewise, GNOME Dictionary is also dead upstream and we have replaced it with Artha, which is more of a thesaurus but does dictionary operations as well. Known issues: upon first boot, the system will reboot - this is normal and is the mechanism to set the logo for the login screen; Artha will not launch on a Wayland session." Here is the complete release announcement. Download: edubuntu-25.04-desktop-amd64.iso (5,935MB, SHA256, signature, torrent, pkglist). |

The Voyager project has released a new version of its Ubuntu-based distribution. The latest version, Voyager Live 25.04, is an interim release offering nine months of support. "I present you Voyager 25.04 final version. A 2-in-1 version with GNOME and Xfce desktops unified in a single distribution. Everything is presented in a colorful style, completely redesigned for this combination, the GNOME 48 desktop coupled with the lighter desktop of Xfce 4.20. In summary, two unified systems, GNOME and Xfce, light, fast, modern, fluid, secure and powerful in a hybrid environment for PCs and tablets. The two desktops are very distinct and their respective applications are mostly seamless, for either environment. Once installed, you can also remove GNOME or Xfce entirely. For the first time, we will be integrating ChatGPT, one AI Chatbot in the terminal without the need for API key in version 3.5, plus the ChatGPT 4th version mini GNOME extension and an option to remove AI."
