Development Release: Icepack Linux 2.91 |
Icepack Linux 2.91 is a beta release for the upcoming Icepack Linux 3.0. From the release notes: "Icepack linux 2.91 is NOT a full-featured Linux distribution! It is a development release on the road to what you're probably looking for - Icepack linux 3.0 (code name: i3, working name: the answer). 2.91 is for developers interested in the most recent development packages. It does NOT include a graphical installer or system configuration tool. The CD is NOT bootable. Still not scared? :-) OK, here's what 2.91 is: fully apt-aware (apt-rpm and synaptic included)! It comes with kernel 2.4.20, XFree86 4.3.0, glibc 2.3.2 and gcc 3.2.2. The full set of develop tools has been included as well as WindowMaker 0.80.2." The installation instructions are provided. Download: icepack-linux-2.91.iso (378MB).

Review of Icepack-Linux 2.5 |
Graham Todd has sent us a review of Icepack Linux 2.5: "Icepack-Linux 2.5 does what it was designed to do and well; but it is specifically a desktop distro. Its target audience is clearly those coming across from Windows; that is not a bad thing, but it needs a clearer explanation before the total newbie to Linux can better understand some of the points on-screen. The Icepack team have taken that on board, so look forward to easier use in later releases. This is the complete review, together with praise for Icepack's technical support and some information about the upcoming Icepack Linux releases.

Icepack 3, Adrian's Corner and French Web Site |
Lots of activity on the Icepack Linux web site. First, a new development site has been revealed, currently focusing on plans and features of Icepack Linux 3, "scheduled for this winter" (which presumably means winter in the Northern hemisphere). This is a nicely designed site with screenshots and a user forum. Another nice touch is Adrian's corner: "Hi, my name is Adrian Hilgardth, I'm 35 years old and the father, maintainer and main developer of icepack linux." It seems that Adrian is planning a series of articles for Linux beginners -- the first one, entitled What is Linux? And what is a Linux distribution? is now online. And finally, besides English and German, the entire Icepack Linux web site is now also available in French. Off you go...

Distribution Release: Icepack 2.5 |
As announced on 25 June: "A new release - we are happy to present you our Icepack linux 2.5, of course again with the features you got used to: our user-friendly installation with the icepack installation manager...", read the rest on the product page. The packages have now been uploaded to the Icepack mirror sites. No ISO images as yet, but our Icepack page is up-to-date -- the distribution now ships with the latest Kernel, Mozilla, OpenOffice.org and AbiWord as well as KDE 3.0.1. Links: features, screenshots, FAQs and the Icepack e-Shop - it is €29.90 for 4 CDs + basic support and €34.90 for 4 CDs + premium support.

Distribution Release: Icepack 2.0.1 |
Icepack Linux 2.0.1, a bugfix release: "It's been over a month now since we released our Icepack 2 - and we are encouraged and overjoyed at the feedback and the great number of 'icepackers' who have accompanied us since our 1.0 and even earlier and at all those who have joined them recently!" This update also resulted in availability of a freely downloadable ISO image: icepack-linux-2.0.1.iso (648MB). Don't expect staggering download speeds though as only one download mirror is provided. Presumably, you can get it faster if you are prepared to part with US$5 for a download edition or US$30 and up for a boxed edition - full details on the distribution's e-shop page. The Icepack Linux home page and this site's Icepack page carry further info.
