A new version of Freeduc has been released. New features in 1.3: "CD-ROM ISO images of the sources are now available; dictd server with megabyte of dictionaries installed locally; Gnome-dictionary and dict client point to the local dictionary server; Galeon used as the default web browser; Fully working WIMS; add smbclient so xfsamba works correctly; remove KNOPPIX OpenOffice.org package and replace it by the official Debian one (v. 1.0.2); add German, English, Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese language packages for openoffice.org..." More changes are listed on the distribution's home page. Freeduc is a live CD distribution based on KNOPPIX, but with emphasis on educational software and designed to run on older hardware; it is developed by Paris-based OFSET (Organization for Free Software in Education and Teaching). | About Freeduc
|
| Freeduc is a French, Debian-based Linux distribution designed to run from an external USB device. Originally created in 2001 by Organization for Free Software in Education and Teaching (OFSET) with the objective of promoting the development of free software for educational purposes, it is now maintained by Linux enthusiasts at Lycée Jean Bart in Dunkerque, France. The Freeduc images are provided in two variants, "heavy" and "simple", both of which offer exactly the same software, but the former is designed for 16 GB USB drives and includes storage space for newly created files. The distribution uses the Cinnamon desktop.

Distribution Release: Freeduc-cd 1.5 |

Freeduc-cd is a specialist live CD distribution specifically developed for use in primary schools. It is built around the light-weight XFce desktop environment and includes a large collection of educational software. Freeduc-cd 1.5, developed by the Organization for Free Software in Education and Teaching (OFSET) in cooperation with several other volunteer groups, was released recently: "Freeduc-cd 1.5 is a special version for primary education. A bug fix version of a recently released Freeduc CD is available for download. Changes include the following: "WIMS fully working; GCompris sound and Python board working; Italian XFce Desktop back in good shape; DrGeo 0.9.11prerelease." After 9 beta releases, the new Freeduc 1.4 live CD is now ready for public consumption: "OFSET, the organization for the development of free software for education and teaching, is working with UNESCO to set up an international version of its FREEDUC distribution. FREEDUC is a GNU/Linux distribution which can be used without installation. It is specifically dedicated to the world of education and it enables an easy introduction for stakeholders of education to the 40 free software packages included on the cd-rom. OpenIndiana
OpenIndiana is a continuation of the OpenSolaris operating system. It was conceived during the period of uncertainty following the Oracle takeover of Sun Microsystems, after several months passed with no binary updates made available to the public. The formation proved timely, as Oracle discontinued OpenSolaris soon after in favour of Solaris 11 Express, a binary distribution with a more closed development model to début later this year. OpenIndiana is part of the illumos Foundation, and provides a true open-source community alternative to Solaris 11 and Solaris 11 Express, with an open development model and full community participation.
