Oralux is a GNU/Linux distribution designed for blind or visually impaired people, using Emacspeak as its audio desktop. The project has announced the first development build of version 0.7: "Oralux 0.7 alpha is available. Oralux 0.7 alpha proposes three audio environments (Emacspeak, Yasr, Speakup), six languages (Brazilian Portuguese, English, French, German, Russian and Spanish), and Braille drivers (Brltty 3.7.2). Oralux 0.7 alpha is based on KNOPPIX 4.02 (kernel 2.6.12). Features: Emacspeak 23.0 by TV Raman plus patches by Igor B. Poretsky; Yasr 0.6.7 by Mike Gorse plus patches...." The next version of Oralux, a GNU/Linux audio distribution for visually impaired persons, starts off with an alpha release. What's new? "Oralux 0.6 alpha: the audio menu is also available in Russian; the user can select her braille display or her external voice synthesizer using the audio menu; a new cheatcode to select the external synthesizer; two new voice synthesizers have been added: ParleMax (in French) and Multispeech/Ru_tts (in Russian and English); new environment based on Yasr and a mini menu." 2003-10-03 Distribution Release: Oralux 0.05
A new version of Oralux, a KNOPPIX-based distribution for visually impaired persons, is now available: "Based on KNOPPIX 3.3 (2003-09-24). Emacspeak Festival MBROLA (EFM) is included. It supplies an English or French software synthesis. The Castillan Spanish or German files of the DECtalk software can be automatically installed. If the alsa driver is required, the alsa cheatcode will be typed once, and will be automatically restored for the following boots. The introductory menu is now available in 4 languages (Castillan Spanish and German have been added). Selecting another item in the menu: up or down arrow keys. Oralux 0.04 has been released. What's new? "Based on KNOPPIX 3.2 (2003-06-06); the preferences (volume, type of keyboard,...) are selected via the talking menu; preferences and documents may be saved; the ISO image is lighter (378 MB); the CD may be ejected or not ejected before the system is halted; a few bugs have been fixed."
