Caixa Mágica is a Portuguese distribution for i586 and x86_64 processors, based on SUSE Linux. Caixa Mágica 11 is designed for both desktops and servers; it offers an easy-to-use desktop environment with KDE or GNOME, custom configuration utilities, intuitive installation program with an option to resize NTFS partitions, convenient software installation and updates via apt-get (for RPM) and Synaptic, improved hardware detection and support, and a complete desktop environment in Portuguese. The project's latest release, version 11, was originally announced (both links in Portuguese) two weeks ago, but only now have the CD and DVD images made available for free download; get the DVDs from here: CM11_32_final_dvd.iso (3,542MB, MD5), CM11_64_final_dvd.iso (3,633MB, MD5). |

Caixa Mágica is a Portuguese Linux distribution for desktops and servers. The project's early versions were based on SUSE Linux and later on Mandriva Linux, but starting from version 16 Caixa Mágica is built from Ubuntu. It features the GNOME desktop environment.

Flavio Moringa has announced the release of Linux Caixa Mágica 21, a new stable version of the Portuguese project's Ubuntu-based desktop Linux distribution with GNOME Shell. This release provides some interesting enhancements, such as built-in file synchronisation with remote online storage services, including Google Drive and Dropbox. It also comes with updated software packages and the "Classic" user interface built into GNOME 3. For those users who prefer other desktop environments, KDE, LXDE and Xfce are now available from the distribution's online repositories. Caixa Mágica 21 includes GNOME 3.8, LibreOffice 4.1.3, Linux kernel 3.11, GIMP 2.8.6, Grive 1.4, Flash Player 11.2.202.341, Skype 4.2.0.11, Cartão Cidadão 2.2.0, Adobe Reader 9, WINE 1.4.1 and Boot-Repair 3.199. Flavio Moringa has announced the release of Linux Caixa Mágica 20, a new version of the Portuguese project's Ubuntu-based distribution with GNOME 3 optimised for home and office deployment and enhanced with various tweaks and extra software for use in Portugal: "Linux Caixa Mágica 20 is now available for download. You can get it from our Linux Caixa Mágica download page by selecting the version from the drop-down menu. This new version brings updates to all packages, new installation options (like LVM support), latest hardware support, and global performance improvements among many other things. Linux Caixa Mágica 19 has been released. Linux Caixa Mágica is a Portuguese Linux distribution based on Ubuntu and featuring the latest GNOME 3 desktop with GNOME Shell. The most important features of this release are software updates to GNOME 3.6, LibreOffice 3.6.2, Linux kernel 3.5, Mozilla Firefox 19.0 and Google Chrome 24.0.1312.56, as well as a new version of the Portuguese citizen card software program with support for digital signatures of PDF files. Another interesting new feature is the introduction of Caixa Mágica TopApps, a one-click, web-based software installation tool. This version offers a possibility to upgrade directly from Caixa Mágica 18, while Wubi, a utility designed to install the distribution from Windows, is also available. Caixa Mágica 18, a Portuguese Linux distribution for desktops and servers based on Ubuntu, has been released. Caixa Mágica 18 is a long-term support release which guarantees that it will receive security updates for the period of five years. Four different editions - GNOME, KDE, LXDE and "servidor" - are available. The major software packages included in this release are GNOME 3.4.1, KDE 4.8.2, LibreOffice 3.5.2, Linux kernel 3.2, as well as a new Portuguese citizen card software program. Linux Caixa Mágica 16, a new stable version of the Portuguese desktop Linux distribution, has been released. This is the project's first version based on Ubuntu (previous releases were based on openSUSE and later on Mandriva) and it comes in separate live media with GNOME and KDE desktops. Other new features and applications of the release include Firefox 4.0.1, LibreOffice 3.3.2, Caixa Mágica software centre, Shotwell photo management program, Banshee media player, automatic detection of proprietary firmware, new package management formant and system, and simplified system installer. Development Releases: Linux Caixa Mágica 16 Beta |

A development build of Linux Caixa Mágica 16, a Portuguese Linux distribution for the desktop, has been released for testing. The biggest change is the fact that Caixa Mágica is no longer based on Mandriva Linux as in the past, but it is now built from the latest Ubuntu, with standard GNOME 2 as the default desktop environment. Version 16 is based on Ubuntu 11.04 and it it includes many more installation and configuration options while supporting a much larger number of hardware devices than previous Caixa Mágica releases. For graphics card with 3D support it's possible to activate 3D effects (Compiz Fusion) in the control centre. As always, this is a beta release, so it is not recommended for critical computer system. Development Release: Linux Caixa Mágica 15 Beta |

The first beta release of Linux Caixa Mágica 15, a Portuguese distribution based on Mandriva Linux, is ready for download and testing. The release is available either as installation DVDs or as installable live CDs with KDE or GNOME, all with a choice of processor architecture (i586 or x86_64). The purpose of this release is to collect suggestions and bug reports from beta testers; it is not recommended for deployment on critical systems. The principal new features and packages include: KDE 4.4 and GNOME 2.30; Linux kernel 2.6.33.3; a guest account; parental control features with support for control on application level; Firefox 3.6.3, OpenOffice.org 3.2, Chromium web browser and many other software packages. Linux Caixa Mágica 14, a Portuguese desktop and server distribution based on Mandriva Linux, has been released. According to the release announcement, Linux Caixa Mágica is the most widely used Linux distribution in Portugal, often deployed in offices and schools around the country. The latest release features: support for proprietary video drivers by ATI and NVIDIA; support for suspend-to-RAM on notebooks; improved support for modern wireless network cards and printers; over 20,000 software packages in the distribution's repositories, installable with APT for RPM or Synaptic package managers. Linux Caixa Mágica is a Portuguese general-purpose distribution based on Mandriva Linux. The first release candidate of the upcoming version 14, scheduled for final release in the first half o May, was announced yesterday. The main features of this release include improved hardware detection and better usability, while the major software components of the release are Linux kernel 2.6.29, KDE 4.2.2 and GNOME 2.26. Also included are APT for RPM and Synaptic, developed by Caixa Mágica, featuring a "rollback" ability, recording of package installation failures, and communication with the central server. The announcement warns that it isn't possible to upgrade systems running older versions of Caixa Mágica, so those interested in helping to test the distribution should perform a clean installation.
