NEW • Distribution Release: Knoppel 0.8 |

Nick Niktaris has announced the release of Knoppel 0.8, a variant of the KNOPPIX live CD designed for Greek-speaking audience. The new version is based on the recently released KNOPPIX 5.1.1, with kernel 2.6.19.1, Aufs as a replacement for Unionfs, and KDE 3.5.5 from Debian Etch. Other new features and applications include: updated OpenOffice.org 2.0.4 with Greek grammar and spell checking add-on; IceWeasel 2.0; NTFS read and write support with ntfs-3g; support for 3D desktop effects with Beryl; Amarok 1.4.4 as a replacement for XMMS; addition of KlamAV anti-virus software; updated Frozen Bubble 2.1.0, removal of Audacity, Thunderbird, SuperKaramba.... Distribution Release: Knoppel 0.7 |

A new stable version of Knoppel, which is essentially a Greek variant of the popular KNOPPIX live CD, has been released. Version 0.7 is based on KNOPPIX 5.0.1 with kernel 2.6.17.7, X.Org 7.0 and KDE 3.5.3 and OpenOffice.org 2.0.3 (with an updated spell-checking tool). It also includes support for RAID controllers, udev for automatic recognition of external storage devices, NTFS read/write support (experimental), and new drivers for wireless cards and internal modems. Knoppel is a KNOPPIX-based live CD designed for Greek speakers. The newly released version 0.6 comes with a number of updates and improvements, including the following: synchronised with the latest Debian "testing" branch; upgraded kernel to 2.6.11.11, KDE to 3.4.1, ALSA to 1.0.9, OpenOffice.org to 1.1.4; UnionFS with read/write access while running from live CD; included several enhancements from the KANOTIX project, such as improved hardware auto-detection and hard disk installation program; introduction of Synaptic for package management; support for wireless network cards (ipw2100 and ipw2200); updated FreeNX. Knoppel is a KNOPPIX-based live CD designed for Greek speakers. The newly released version 0.5 is now available for download; the main changes include the following: the default encoding has changed to UTF-8; kernels have been updated to 2.4.27 (default) and 2.6.9; most packages have been synchronised with KNOPPIX 3.7; KDE has been upgraded to 3.3.1 and OpenOffice.org to 1.1.3. The distribution now includes FreeNX 0.2.5, Firefox 1.0 and Thunderbird 0.9, as well as support for many wireless network cards. Here is the complete release announcement (in Greek). Knoppel is a KNOPPIX variant designed for Greek users. Knoppel version 0.4, based on KNOPPIX 3.4, has been released; it comes with KDE 3.2.2, OpenOffice.org 1.1.1, Gimp 2.0,5 Mozilla 1.6; a choice of two kernels - 2.4.26 and 2.6.6; improved hardware autodetection; improved support for Greek; support for Bluetooth, ACPI and GPRS; support for writing to NTFS partitions. Many other packages have been upgraded to their latest versions, while newly added applications include Evolution and Kbabel. The Knoppel desktop now sports a brand new look.
