About rPath
rPath Linux is a Linux distribution built with the new Conary distributed software management system. Conary is designed, based on many years of Linux software packaging and distribution development experience, to automate many of the tasks that have made it difficult to build Linux distributions. rPath's mission is to provide system software that is easily tailored to suit unique application needs. rPath Linux, built with the Conary distributed software management system, is not only a distribution in its own right, but also a base technology explicitly designed to enable you to create purpose-built operating system images using the rBuilder Online technology.

Distribution Release: rPath Linux 2.0 |
Michael K. Johnson has announced the release of rPath Linux 2.0, a highly customisable appliance operating system featuring the Conary package management utility: "rPath is pleased to announce that rPath Linux 2 is now available and recommended for general use as an appliance platform. What's new? rPath Linux 2 is the next step in the evolution of the rPath Linux platform. In addition to a technology refresh (new versions of included packages), rPath Linux 2 is better tuned as a platform to show off your work. Just enough OS - rPath Linux 2 is smaller than rPath Linux 1. Boot splash branding - rPath Linux 2 implements a graphical boot process which is easy to customize to look the way you want. Additional security mechanisms: - several additional runtime security measures have been added to most packages. More robust system boot - the syslinux bootloader is now the default bootloader....." Development Release: rPath Linux 2.0 Beta 3 |
Michael K. Johnson has announced the third development release of rPath Linux 2.0, an appliance operating system featuring the Conary package management: "The third beta test snapshot toward rPath Linux 2 has been released. New in this release: all updates, particularly security updates, since rPath Linux 2 Beta 2 have been incorporated into this release; Anaconda installation onto iSCSI now works correctly; the kernel portion of open-vm-tools is now in kernel:vmware instead of kernel:runtime to facilitate removing those modules on systems that need to run the host modules instead; the telnet-server package is now available; the splashy boot/shutdown graphical splash screen program is now gracefully quiet by default, preventing it from presenting scary-looking error messages in normal operation...." Development Release: rPath Linux 2 Beta 1 |
Michael K. Johnson has announced the first beta release of rPath Linux 2, an appliance operating system: "The first beta test snapshot toward rPath Linux 2 has been released. This release contains: VMware support integrated into the default kernel; open-vm-tools included in vmware group flavors; SYSLINUX's EXTLINUX is the default bootloader; Conary 2.0 with several optimizations and improvements; short group flavors; appliance installer ISO images, installable ISO images and appliance installer ISO images for 32-bit and 64-bit Xen dom0. rPath Linux 2 will be an appliance operating system. In keeping with this focus, the installer ISO images for rPath Linux 2 Beta 1 are intended primarily for testing the installer, and secondarily as a platform for testing appliance development." Development Release: rPath Linux 2 Alpha 4 |
Michael K. Johnson has announced the availability of a new alpha release of rPath Linux 2: "The fourth alpha snapshot toward rPath Linux 2 has been released. It is very different from all previous snapshots. It has been trimmed down into a smaller, more focused, better base for appliances: smaller kernel, smaller group of core software for an installed system. It is available in our new 'appliance installer' format, in which package selection is not enabled and installation is much faster and requires much less memory. It has a new compiler and toolchain, and has been completely rebuilt from source using the rMake build tool. In addition, it includes newer versions of many included software components." Michael K. Johnson has announced the release of rPath Linux 1.0.7, an independently developed distribution featuring the Conary package management system: "rPath Linux, the first Linux distribution built using the groundbreaking Conary software management system, has released updated images for rPath Linux 1. The new images incorporate updates to the installation process and all package updates released as of September 26, 2007. Development Release: rPath Linux 2 Alpha 3 |
Michael K. Johnson has announced the third alpha release of rPath Linux 2, an independent distribution with a unique software management infrastructure: "The third development snapshot in the rPath Linux 2 Alpha release process has been made available. Most of the software included in the distribution has been updated, and it has been completely rebuilt from source since the second development snapshot. This includes latest X from X.Org and latest GNOME. It also changes the way that Python was built; unfortunately, this makes it hard to update from alpha2. We recommend new installs for rPath Linux 2 alpha 3." Please read the rest of the release announcement for more information and known issues. Development Release: rPath Linux 2 Alpha 2 |
Michael K. Johnson has announced the second alpha release of rPath Linux 2.0 for i386 and x86_64 processors: "The second development snapshot in the rPath Linux 2 Alpha release process has been made available. Most of the software included in the distribution has been updated, and it has been completely rebuilt from source since the first development snapshot. This includes latest X from X.Org and latest GNOME. There are many known issues in this snapshot: installation on at least some Thinkpad T43 models is known not to function; package selection has not yet been implemented in the installer - installation will require approximately 4GB and you cannot reduce this by de-selecting packages."
