OpenELEC
OpenELEC was a Linux-based embedded operating system built specifically to run Kodi, the open source entertainment media hub. The idea behind OpenELEC was to allow people to use their Home Theatre PC (HTPC) like any other device one might have attached to a TV, like a DVD player or Sky box. Instead of having to manage a full operating system, configure it and install the packages required to turn it into a hybrid media center, OpenELEC was designed to be simple to install, manage and use, making it more like running a set-top box than a full-blown computer.

About Ultima
Ultima Linux is a Slackware-compatible Linux distribution available for Intel and AMD-based personal computers. Although first intended as a lightweight, techie-oriented desktop system when development began in November 2004, Ultima has since evolved into a highly stable distribution supporting both desktop and server capabilities. Ultima Linux is built around the K Desktop Environment (KDE), and includes many popular applications such as Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird, the OpenOffice.org office suite, the GIMP image editor, MPlayer and Xine media players, and many others. It borrows Slackware's TGZ package format, and can be extended with additional software from a public repository, or various third-party sites.

Distribution Release: Ultima Linux 8.4 |
Martin Ultima has announced the release of Ultima Linux 8.4, a Slackware-compatible desktop and server distribution built around the KDE desktop: "The Ultima Linux project is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Ultima Linux 8.4. This release includes over 850 packages, including the Linux kernel 2.6.24.7, X.Org 7.3 with ATI and NVIDIA proprietary drivers, KDE 3.5.10, OpenOffice.org 2.4.1. Highlights: all-new code base based on the ultima-scripts package and live CD build system; more optimized base system, including i686-optimized kernel and glibc on x86, and greater use of native code on AMD64; improved hardware support for wireless, ATI and NVIDIA drivers, and some 'netbooks' such as the ASUS Eee PC; cleaner, more refined desktop with numerous Ultima tweaks and enhancements...." Development Release: Ultima Linux 8.4 Beta 2 |
Martin Ultima has announced the availability of the second beta release of Ultima Linux 8.4, a Slackware-inspired distribution for desktops and servers: "This is planned as the last beta release before 8.4 final. All packages are built (although most are only available from the repository, not on the CD); various bugs -- including ATI drivers, CD-ROM permissions and symbolic links, installation issues -- have been fixed; stability has, for the most part, been vastly improved. There have been a few minor package updates, but hopefully not enough to cause massive breakage (still kernel 2.6.24.7, GCC 4.3.0, glibc 2.7, KDE 3.5.9). I'd actually release this as final, except there's a couple small bugs (CD eject on shutdown) remaining, as well as a pretty big one with Broadcom wireless cards." For more information please see the release announcement and release notes. Download: ultimalinux-8.4pre2_Desktop-x86-LiveCD.iso (681MB, MD5), ultimalinux-8.4pre2_Desktop-AMD64-LiveCD.iso (698MB, MD5).

Development Release: Ultima Linux 8.4 Beta 1 |
Martin Ultima announced a new beta release of Ultima Linux 8.4, a fast, powerful, and convenient computer operating system which emphasizes a "common sense" approach to development and eases common system administration tasks. "Right now it's only available as a slightly-more-bloated-than-usual x86 LiveCD; due mainly to size reasons, an AMD64 version has been postponed until a later date (but you can grab the new ultima-scripts and built it yourself, from the package repository). As far as the new codebase goes: The desktop code is essentially "feature-complete"; servers and development tools are a work in progress and will be the focus of the next beta. Among other features, in no particular order, we have kernel 2.6.24.7 with SquashFS+LZMA support; ext2/ext3, ReiserFS, XFS, and JFS filesystems (XFS default)..." See the release announcement and release notes for more information. Download (MD5) the live CD image: ultimalinux-8.4...LiveCD.iso (692MB). Update: The 64-bit version is now available: ultimalinux-8.4...AMD64-LiveCD.iso (703MB).

Distribution Release: Ultima Linux 8.3 |
Martin Ultima has announced the release of Ultima Linux 8.3, a user-friendly, Slackware-based live distribution with an automatic update tool: "Announcing the Ultima Linux 8.3 release! I'm not even going to pretend to write all this marketing rubbish, because quite honestly I'm not much good at it and it's a senseless waste of time. Really there's no point anyway, on the surface there's really nothing new - most of the changes are upgrades (kernel 2.6.23.12, KDE 3.5.8, Firefox 2.0.0.11, Thunderbird 2.0.0.9, OpenOffice.org 2.3.1), although you will probably see some really nice new wallpaper images in KDE. There have been a few fairly major changes with this release, so expect bugs, but then again that's what you get with pretty much any new software release... it seems to be stable on my machine anyway." See the release announcement and release notes for more information. Download the live DVD image via BitTorrent: ultimalinux-8.3-LiveDVD.iso (2,775MB).
