About Ulteo
Ulteo Application System (Ulteo AS) is a Debian/Ubuntu-based Linux distribution created by Gaël Duval, the original founder of Mandrake Linux (now Mandriva Linux) and co-founder of MandrakeSoft (now Mandriva). It is a hybrid, network-oriented and mostly automatic computing system that ships with hundreds of applications and innovative features. The basic version of the Ulteo AS provides a choice of applications for daily use, such as Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice.org, etc., but can be easily extended with a set of applications from the Ulteo panel. It also provides document and panel content synchronisation capabilities between a local installation of Ulteo AS and Ulteo Open Virtual Desktop.

Development Release: Ulteo Applications System Beta 1 |
Gaël Duval has announced the availability of the first beta release of Ulteo Application System, a Linux distribution with the goal of simplifying the use of computers by bypassing installation of applications, and bringing mobility features: "After the recent success we had at providing OpenOffice.org in a web browser, we're proud to deliver the first beta of nearly two years of work: Ulteo Application System 'Sirius' is now ready for download on several mirrors. It was the needed 'client' brick to the Ulteo framework that is made of several online services, and provides, among others, automatic personal data (and forthcoming user environment) synchronising. In this release, you will also be able to test the first version of the 'My Digital Life' panel which is a new way to organise your documents and applications, and manage your system installations." Development Release: Ulteo Sirius Alpha 1 |
Gaël Duval has announced the first test release of Ulteo, a new distribution that promises to introduce revolutionary concepts in managing and updating an operating system and applications. From the release announcement: "Here is the first public version of Ulteo! Its codename is 'Sirius' because we want to make it a star." The brief release notes explain some of the ideas behind Ulteo: "This installable live CD is based on Debian and Ubuntu packages. It's installed on the hard-drive using "Yuch". A daemon, called UGD (Ulteo General Daemon), is always connecting to Ulteo servers to see if a newer, more up to date system is available. It can then upgrade to this new system." This release of Ulteo is based on Ubuntu 6.06 and uses kernel 2.6.15, X.Org 7.0, KDE 3.5.2 and Firefox 1.5.0.8. The CD image is available for download from here: ulteo-kde-i386-sirius-20061206-1.iso (622MB, MD5) and via BitTorrent.
