Daisuke Suzuki has announced the release of Vine Linux 5.0, a Japanese community distribution for desktops and servers: "This is Vine Linux version 5 release. Since this is not a commercial edition, non-free applications and fonts are not included on the CD/DVD. Instead of proprietary ATOX Japanese input and Ricoh/Dynacomware fonts, this FTP edition contains Anthy and free TrueType fonts. Vine Linux 5 has the following new features: lightweight and high-speed; restructured software collection; support for x86_64 architecture; look and feel improvements; new user-friendly tools; new USB/DVD installable images." Vine Linux 5.0 is based on Linux kernel 2.6.27 with glibc 2.8 and GCC 4.1.2, the default desktop is GNOME 2.26 using X.Org Server 1.6.3. Vine Linux is a supreme Linux distribution with integrated Japanese environment for desktop PCs and notebooks. Project Vine was founded by six members of the Project Japanese Extension (JPE) in 1998 and has been developing Vine Linux with help of many members and volunteers. Vine Seed, the development version of Vine Linux, is a public software repository, which all developers are welcome to join and contribute to. Out-of-the-box Kanji support is available throughout most applications and Japanese input support is provided by either the FreeWnn (or Wnn6 in the commercial "CR" edition) or the Canna input server.

Daisuke Suzuki has announced the release of a new version of Vine Linux, a general-purpose Japanese Linux distribution with RPM package management. Code-named "Poupille", Vine Linux 6.5 upgrades the Linux kernel to the long-term supported 4.4 branch and provides updates to many popular applications, but it continues to include GNOME 2 as the default desktop environment. Daisuke Suzuki has announced the availability of the initial beta build of Vine Linux 6.5, an upcoming new version of the popular Japanese distribution whose origins date back to 1999 when it evolved from Project Japanese Extensions (PJE) into a Japanese operating system based on Red Hat Linux. This is the project's first release in some 18 months and as such, it comes with plenty of updates (even though the default desktop environment remains GNOME 2.32). Some of the changes include: update to Linux kernel 4.4 which is the latest kernel branch with long-term support; updated toolchain - GCC 4.9.3, glibc 2.23 and Binutils 2.26; updated Firefox 47.0.1 and Thunderbird 45.2.0; updated OpenJDK 7u91; updated LibreOffice 5.1.4; updated OpenSSL 1.0.1t. This is the first of several expected beta builds before the arrival of a stable 6.5 release later this year. This is mostly a security and errata update of the free distribution which does not contain any proprietary components, non-free applications or non-free fonts. Daisuke Suzuki has announced the release of Vine Linux 5.1 (code name "Cheval Blanc"), a Japanese general-purpose community distribution available for the i386, x86_64 and PowerPC architectures. This is a minor update in the Vine 5.x series that integrates all the bug-fix and security updates announced since the 5.0 release, but otherwise provides no new major features and only a few package version updates. The product's base system remains unchanged. This update was compiled as part of the project's preparation for the two-day Open Source Conference 2010 which starts today in Tokyo, Japan. Development Release: Vine Linux 5.0 Alpha |

Daisuke Suzuki has announced the availability of the first alpha build of Vine Linux 5.0, a general-purpose distribution designed primarily for Japanese-speaking users. This early alpha release may contain bugs and, as such, it is recommended that only experienced developers and beta testers install the operating system. Its APT update mechanism points to Vine Seed, the distribution's development tree, so installed systems can be continuously updated to follow the development cycle. Known issues: some video cards using ATI Mobility Radeon M6 might not work correctly; the nv driver fails during the installation process. Although it arrives some two weeks after its projected release date, if no major issues are found, the final version can be expected in about two weeks from now. The only major change since beta 4 is the status of apt-line, the Vine Linux package manager, which now points to the 4.0 repository by default, for both the main distribution and VineSeed packages. The developers also request that all testers run a media check on the installation CD before submitting bug reports; this can be done with a 'linux mediacheck' command at boot prompt. Daisuke Suzuki has announced a new beta release of Vine 4.0 for i386 processors. Although the original release schedule called for a release candidate at this late stage in testing, due to various issues the project has decided to release another beta build. If no major problems are encountered, the release candidate should be out within the next 1 - 2 weeks. According to the changelog on the project's beta page, the latest release of Vine Linux 4.0 includes two new kernel modules (bcm43xx, sdhci), a modified kernel configuration file, newly added support for ATI Radeon XPRESS 200M card, various bug fixes in the system installer and utilities, and a number of minor package updates. The kernel has been upgraded to version 2.4.27 and some Japanese TrueType fonts have been replaced with alternatives. Several new packages have been included. The Vine Linux project is working on a next major release of Vine Linux, version 3.0. This is the distribution's first major release since October 2002; it includes many packages upgrades, including a move to GNOME 2.4. XFree86 has been replaced with XOrg. A quick update on Vine Linux. A security issue found in the version of Webmin shipping with Vine Linux 2.6 has prompted a new release numbered 2.6r1. You can download the new i386 ISO here: Vine26r1-i386.iso. If you have installed Vine 2.6, there is of course no need to download the new ISO; use the 'apt-get install webmin' command to update to a newer Webmin. A note for those who have asked - Vine Linux does support English. It uses Anaconda, the graphical Red Hat installer and you can choose either English or Japanese as the language to guide you through the installation process.

Distribution Release: Vine Linux 2.6 |

Vine Linux 2.6 has been released. The announcement (in Japanese only) has all the details; the main points being that this release includes extended hardware support for the newest graphics cards, updates to many software package, notably KDE 3.0.4, Mozilla 1.1 and Apache 1.3.27, and the usual security patches and bugfixes. Vine Linux uses APT-RPM to manage its software, a feature which offers a very easy way to upgrade from earlier versions. The installation ISO can be obtained from here: Vine26-i386.iso (617MB) or from one of the mirrors, while additional software found in the VinePlus directory can also be installed via APT-RPM. Vine Linux enjoys growing popularity in Japan; besides Intel, the distribution also supports Alpha, SPARC, PPC and other architectures.
