Rubén RodrÃguez Pérez has announced the release of Trisquel GNU/Linux 3.5, a completely "libre" distribution (as defined by the Free Software Foundation) based on Ubuntu: "Trisquel GNU/Linux 3.5, code name 'Awen', is ready. This release is a fully free Ubuntu 9.10 derivative that includes extra software, better multimedia support, more translations and faster configuration. For this release we used ext4 for the root file system and XFS for the home one, to have a balance between speed and usability. Some important features include a much faster boot process and the ability to encrypt the home directory. All packages were updated, including: Linux-libre kernel 2.6.31, X.Org 7.4, GNOME 2.28, OpenOffice.org 3.1.1, a Mozilla-based web browser 3.5." Distribution Release: Trisquel GNU/Linux 12.0 |
Rubén Rodríguez has announced the release of Trisquel GNU/Linux 12.0, a major update of the project's "libre" distribution built for home users, small enterprises and educational centers. The new version is based on the long-term supported Ubuntu 24.04: "We are proud to announce the release of Trisquel 12.0 'Ecne'. After extensive work and thorough testing, 'Ecne' is ready for production use. Trisquel 12.0 ships with APT 3.0, enabling us to fully adopt the modern deb822 repository format across all installation paths. The 'netinstall' (for text-based installation and advanced users), Ubiquity (for graphical installation from a live system), as well as Synaptic and other package-management tools have been updated to use the new repository formats. The kernel remains one of our biggest engineering challenges with every release. For 'Ecne', we focused on making our kernel changes more modular, substantially reducing breakage in the udeb components used during installation." See the release announcement for more details. Distribution Release: Trisquel GNU/Linux 11.0 |
Trisquel GNU/Linux is a 100% libre Ubuntu-based Linux distribution. The project's latest release, version 11.0, is based on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and greatly expands compatibility with a wider range of CPU architectures. "New supported architectures. Following the addition of 32-bit ARM support in Trisquel 10, we now introduce support for 64-bit ARM and POWER architectures, to expand the options for hardware compatibility. d-i/Netinstall (also called debian-installer) is the text-mode installer for Trisquel, which allows for advanced and custom installations, often used for servers. After Ubuntu dropped support for this installation method, we stepped in to add any removed pieces and make it functional again, often from upstream Debian sources. Browser packaging: as Ubuntu continues to shift towards snap packaging, we took on the task of continuing to package key components such as Abrowser (our improved Firefox derivative) as a standard .deb package. Abrowser continues to bring a fully free browser that balances privacy and usability." Additional information is provided in the release announcement. Distribution Release: Trisquel GNU/Linux 10.0 |
Rubén Rodríguez has announced the release of Trisquel GNU/Linux 10.0, a major update of the project's Ubuntu-based distribution recognised as fully libre by the Free Software Foundation. The new release is based on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and is available in MATE, LXDE and KDE Plasma flavours. It also adds support for the ARM architecture: "Trisquel 10.0, code name 'Nabia' is finally here. This release will be supported with security updates until April 2025. Additionally, an upgrade to the 'Etiona' release (version 9.0.2) is also being published today, providing updates and corrections to the installation ISO images. The news is the culmination of months of work towards fixing, cleaning, and reviewing hundreds of packages and tickets with close feedback from the community at large. We are happy to announce the addition of support for ARM devices, incorporating armhf as a newly supported architecture for Nabia. The changes done to the development system to achieve this will make it much easier to expand to other architectures soon, targeting 64-bit ARM and PowerPC next." Distribution Release: Trisquel GNU/Linux 9.0.1 |
Trisquel GNU/Linux is a 100% libre Ubuntu-based Linux distribution. The project has published a new update to its 9.0 series. The new media mostly offers security fixes, particularly dealing with out of date certificates. The new 9.0.1 media also removes some binary blobs found in the Linux kernel. "This minor update to the 9.x "Etiona" series is intended to provide an up to date set of ISO images, both for use as an installation medium and as a live environment with newer packages. This addresses two main security concerns in the 9.0 original ISO images: An outdated Certificate Authority collection (package ca-certificates) included an expired root certificate for LetsEncrypt, resulting in blocked access to repositories for new packages or updates. Overlooked binary blobs were found in versions of Linux-Libre prior to v5.14. Updated packages were added to the Trisquel repositories to correct the issue, and new ISO images were produced to include the fix. Along with those fixes, the release includes any other security update published upstream since we published Etiona, and the latest version of the Mozilla-based "Abrowser" (version 93)." Further details may be found in the project's release announcement. Download: trisquel_9.0.1_amd64.iso (2,618MB, SHA256, signature, torrent, pkglist). |

Distribution Release: Trisquel GNU/Linux 9.0 |
Trisquel GNU/Linux is a fully free operating system from the Ubuntu family. The project has, after a long development cycle, released version 9.0 with long-term support (LTS). "They say that good things come to those who wait, and for this release there has been a lot of waiting but also plenty of good things. Trisquel 9.0, codename "Etiona" is our most polished release yet, thanks to the contribution of a very committed team of volunteers. This release comes in several flavors: MATE desktop, the default. Based on the popular fork of GNOME 2.x, this edition provides a classic desktop environment matching the user experience of previous Trisquel releases. Trisquel Mini, a lightweight version for older machines and netbooks. Based on the LXDE desktop environment and a selection of resource-saving applications to bring new life to your hardware. Triskel, running the KDE environment. Excellent for customizing the design and look in fine detail. Trisquel netinstall image. To deploy with a command-line install interface, ideal for servers and advanced users. Trisquel TOAST, based on the Sugar learning platform. Comes with dozens of educational activities for children." Further information can be found in the project's release announcement. Download (pkglist): trisquel_9.0_amd64.iso (2,509MB, SHA256, signature, torrent), trisquel-mini_9.0_amd64.iso (1,208MB, SHA256, signature, torrent). |

Distribution Release: Trisquel GNU/Linux 8.0 |
Trisquel GNU/Linux is an Ubuntu-based desktop distribution which features free and open source software exclusively. The project's latest release, Trisquel 8.0 "Flidas", is based on Ubuntu 16.04 and includes support through to the year 2021. "The biggest internal change to the default edition is the switch from GNOME to MATE 1.12. The main reason for this change was that GNOME dropped support for their legacy desktop, which retained the GNOME 2.x user experience and didn't require 3D composition -- a feature that in many computers would still need non-free software to run at full speed. MATE provides a perfect drop-in replacement, it is very light and stable and it retains all the user experience design that we are used to from previous Trisquel releases. The next most important component is Abrowser 59 (based on Mozilla Firefox), which is not only fully-featured and quite faster than before, it has also been audited and tweaked to maximize the user's privacy without compromising on usability." Additional information can be found in the project's release announcement. Development Release: Trisquel GNU/Linux 8.0 Alpha |
The Trisquel project, a distribution which takes a hard stance in providing free and open source software exclusively, has released a new development snapshot: Trisquel GNU/Linux 8.0 alpha. The new alpha carries the code name "Flidas" and switches the default desktop environment from GNOME 2 to MATE. It also features the Linux-Libre 4.4 kernel. "The image has many of the basic components that will be the base for Flidas. The default desktop environment will be MATE 1.12.1, a fork of GNOME 2 that brings back all the functionality and quality level of previous Trisquel releases. The panel, file manager and control centre are already looking polished. This decision comes from the current editions of GNOME requiring 3D acceleration even in fallback mode, a requirement that in many cases forces the user to choose between a degraded user experience and performance, or the usage of non-free graphics drivers. Instead, we aim to provide a fully functional, highly performing desktop for all users." Further details can be found in the project's release announcement. 2XOS
2XOS was a Debian-based GNU/Linux distribution with a small footprint, optimised for remote desktop computing. It features auto-detection capabilities similar to KNOPPIX. It boots directly to a login manager which, when coupled with the 2X Remote Application Server, redirects users to a remote RDP/ICA/NX desktop. The distribution can be booted via PXE, CD or installed to a hard disk or flash disk. Updates to the distribution are managed through the 2X Remote Application Server web interface. 2XOS requires 2X Remote Application Server to boot up; 2X Remote Application Server was a commercial product, though it was free for up to five thin clients. 2X Software was a company providing virtual desktop, application delivery and mobile device management solutions. It offers a range of solutions to make every organisation's shift to cloud computing simple and affordable.
