Stefan Wold has announced the release of a new set of installation CD images for Lunar Linux, a source-based distribution: "The Lunar team proudly announces the final release of Lunar Linux 1.6.5. The last known issues with the ISO image have been resolved. We added support for hybrid ISO images in the last minute, which means that it's a lot easier to install it from a USB stick. New features in 1.6.5: based on Linux kernel 2.6.35.3 and glibc 2.11.2; hybrid ISO support; added support for the ext4 file system; added option to change preferred /etc/fstab style; UUID, LABEL or device name; OpenSSH and Screen are now part of the live CD to allow remote assistance during install. Summary of changes since 1.6.4: isolinux updated, all modules refreshed...." More details can be found in the release announcement. About Lunar Linux
Lunar is a source based Linux distribution with a unique package management system which builds each software package, or module, for the machine it is being installed on. Though it can take a while to do a complete Lunar installation it's worth it as it tends to be quite fast, once installed! In the beginning Lunar was a fork of Sorcerer GNU Linux (SGL). The fork occurred in late January to early February of 2002 and was originally made up of a small group of people who wanted to collaboratively develop and extend the Sorcerer technology. The original name for the project was Lunar-Penguin but the group decided to re-christen it Lunar Linux while the Lunar-Penguin name has become a sort of umbrella which the team could use if they decide to collaboratively develop something besides Lunar Linux.

Development Release: Lunar Linux 1.6.4 Beta 1 |
Stefan Wold has announced the availability of the source-based Lunar Linux 1.6.4 beta 1 installation ISO images: "Lunar Linux 1.6.4-beta1, code name 'Lacus Autumni', just became available. The 1.6.4 stable release is just around the corner and we hope it will please everyone. As mentioned in our previous announcement, X.Org and Xfce 4 had to be removed from the ISO as it was just not worth the effort to maintain them. Instead we can put that effort into further improving our installer and ISO quality. New features in 1.6.4: working software raid configuration; improved language selection; installation from a USB stick or other media; ships with kernel 2.6.27; ReiserFS, XFS and JFS are now also built-in with the pre-compiled kernels." Development Release: Lunar Linux 1.6.2 Beta 1 |
Auke Kok has announced the first beta release of Lunar Linux 1.6.2, a source-based distribution designed for intermediate and advanced Linux users: "We're happy to announce the first beta release of a new series of Lunar linux installer ISOs. Our new ISOs will be as easy to install as 1.6.1, but pack an extra punch - this series of ISOs pre-installs a basic Xfce 4.4.1 desktop with X.Org 7.2, together with Firefox, Thunderbird, Pidgin, Audacious, GIMP and a few other basic desktop utilities. We hope to make it easy for everyone to both enjoy playing and learning from a true source distro environment and be productive quickly. The extra applications will give new users a fast start and should install easily on most (even brand new) hardware with the 2.6.22.1 kernel, but also give the user a welcome feeling on a freshly installed lunar-linux system." More details in the release announcement. Download: lunar-1.6.2-beta1-i686.iso.bz2 (453MB, MD5).

Distribution Release: Lunar Linux 1.6.1 |
Auke Kok has announced the release of Lunar Linux 1.6.1, a source-based distribution designed for advanced Linux users: "With great pleasure we release 'Moose Drool', also known as the Lunar Linux 1.6.1 Installer ISO, to the public. This ISO is partially a refreshed installer for i686, but it is also our first stable ISO for x86_64. The x86_64 installer ISO thus marks the true final entry for Lunar Linux as a multi-arch distro. This ISO comes with GCC 3.4.6, glibc 2.3.6, Linux 2.6.20, Perl 5.8.8, and other rock solid base components. Although the x86_64 ISO is purely 64-bit only now, we're working to enable multilib, so stay focused for more news on that. This will also be the last ISO with GCC 3.x. Future ISOs will move to GCC 4.x and an updated glibc." Here is the brief release announcement. Download from here: lunar-1.6.1-i686.iso.bz2 (257MB, MD5), lunar-1.6.1-x86_64.iso.bz2 (260MB, MD5).

Development Release: Lunar Linux 1.6.1 RC2 |
Auke Kok has announced the availability of Lunar Linux 1.6.1 RC2 installation CD images: "With great pleasure we release 'Moose Drool', also known as the Lunar-Linux 1.6.1-rc2 Installer ISO. This is the first production-ready ISO release that installs both on x86_64 and i686, which gets us ready for our final 1.6.1 release on 2 architectures. This ISO comes with GCC 3.4.6, glibc 2.3.6, linux 2.6.19.2, Perl 5.8.8, and other rock solid base components. The new kernel means better PATA and SATA support. Updated discover allows better hardware recognition, and smooth installation on non-common hardware. The x86_64 version is pure 64-bit and thus does not provide GRUB as a boot loader." More details in the release announcement. Download: lunar-1.6.1-rc2-i686.iso.bz2 (243MB, MD5), lunar-1.6.1-rc2-x86_64.iso.bz2 (246MB, MD5).

Development Release: Lunar Linux 1.6.1 RC1 |
Auke Kok has announced the first release candidate for Lunar Linux 1.6.1, a source-based distribution originally forked from Sorcerer: "I'm glad to release 1.6.1rc1-i686 for general testing into the Lunar community. This ISO is an incremental update to 1.6.0 and features full updated packages, including kernel 2.6.18.2. This ISO is meant as a refresher for newer systems and new installs, reducing the time to get those updated to the latest packages and providing support for newer systems that require a more recent kernel for hardware support. The ISO has the same size and packages as the 1.6.0 one. -mm, -prepatch and -rc kernels were removed altogether from the build code, as they are too out-of-date for the general user." Read the rest of the release announcement for further details. Download: lunar-1.6.1rc1-i686.iso.bz2 (239MB, MD5).
