About Mandriva
Mandriva Linux was launched in 1998 under the name of Mandrake Linux, with the goal of making Linux easier to use for everyone. At that time, Linux was already well-known as a powerful and stable operating system that demanded strong technical knowledge and extensive use of the command line; MandrakeSoft saw this as an opportunity to integrate the best graphical desktop environments and contribute its own graphical configuration utilities to quickly become famous for setting the standard in Linux ease of use. In February 2005, MandrakeSoft merged with Brazil's Conectiva to form Mandriva S.A., with headquarters in Paris, France. In August 2010 the company suspended the trading of its shares on the Euronext stock exchange. Mandriva SA was formally liquidated in May 2015.

Distribution Release: Mandriva One 2009 "Xfce" |
Mandriva has announced the release of Mandriva One 2009, Xfce edition, an unofficial live CD featuring the Xfce desktop: "The Mandriva community is proud to offer another Xfce edition to the users. This edition is not a Mandriva product (so do not expect any kind of support directly from Mandriva), but has been completed with a great cooperation between the company and the community. We tried our best to provide the best experience possible using Xfce Live but so far some issues still stand. We do not consider those issues blocking, but we'd rather mention them here so you know what to do in case you encounter those problems. This edition contains bug fixes as available on the mirrors on 23 October, which should solve some installations and usage issues." Development Release: Mandriva Linux 2009 Beta 2 |
Adam Williamson has announced the availability of the second beta release of Mandriva Linux 2009: "Mandriva is proud to announce the release of Mandriva Linux 2009 Beta 2 'okapi'. This beta includes a completely new installer for the Free (and, in the final release, Powerpack) edition, and is testing the Fedora system-config-printer printer configuration tool as an alternative to printerdrake. The new beta also brings Firefox 3, OpenOffice.org 3.0 beta, and support for the Ethernet adapter used in many new Eee PC (and other netbook) models. Development Release: Mandriva Linux 2009.0 Beta 1 |
Mandriva released the first beta of Mandriva Linux 2009.0: "Mandriva is proud to announce the release of Mandriva Linux 2009 Beta 1 'thornicrofti'. This beta includes the newest release of KDE 4, KDE 4.1 final (with initial implementation of the Mandriva Ia Ora theme, although this is not yet complete), and GNOME 2.23.5. It also uses Firefox 3 by default, and kernel 2.6.26 final. The new beta also switches to using splashy (rather than bootsplash) for boot and shutdown graphics, and adds synchronization support for Windows Mobile 2003 devices. As always, we remind you not to use pre-releases in any critical situation; install them only on a test system or partition, or in a virtual machine. Additionally, we strongly discourage using this pre-release to upgrade from any earlier release of Mandriva Linux, as the transition process from KDE 3 to KDE 4 is not yet fully implemented and you are likely to end up with an unusable system." Development Release: Mandriva Linux 2009.0 Alpha 2 |
After an internal test version, the second (but first public) alpha release of Mandriva Linux 2009.0, unexpectedly announced as 2009 Spring Alpha 2, is hitting the mirror servers. "This alpha introduces several significant changes, most obviously the inclusion of KDE 4 - 4.1 beta 2, specifically - as the default version of KDE, and the latest development version of GNOME, 2.23.4. The kernel has also been updated to release 2.6.26rc7. We emphasize that the KDE change is a major one that is not yet entirely completed and likely to cause many bugs. As always - but more importantly than ever - we remind you not to use pre-releases in any critical situation; install them only on a test system or partition, or in a virtual machine. Additionally, we strongly discourage using this pre-release to upgrade from any earlier release of Mandriva Linux, as the transition process from KDE 3 to KDE 4 is not yet fully implemented and you are likely to end up with an unusable system." Distribution Review: Mandriva Linux Limited Edition 2005 |
A former Mandrake Linux user and then a Lycoris Desktop/LX user, reviews the latest version of Mandriva Linux to see whether it is an OS he would potentially migrate to since Mandriva has acquired Lycoris: "Lycoris DLX features will not show up in Mandriva until the next major release, which is some ways off yet. So I decided to start experimenting with the latest release, Mandriva 10.2 Limited Edition 2005... If Mandriva wants to SELL a commercial Linux distribution, then I think combining Lycoris' strengths with their own is a wise move. To get people to BUY their software, they have to reach for a larger market. I believe there is a market for windows users who are looking for an alternative. If Mandriva offers a product with a comparable look & feel, functionality and ease of use, I believe they will find customers who will gladly pay them for it." Read the long review titled "Mandrake Revisited: A Lycoris user revisits the OS he left years earlier". On a separate note, Linux Format issue 70 presents a Gaël Duval interview.

Reviews: Mandriva Linux 2005 Limited Edition |
Mad Penguin has a new review - this time they've decided to take a detailed look at Mandriva Linux 2005 Limited Edition: "When everything is said and done and I've finally powered down the test system, I'd have to say that the Mandriva Limited Edition 2005 desktop was an all around good performer. Of all the applications I tested, none failed to open and the desktop was extremely responsive. The installation was simple enough for new users but had the capability of fine tuning for advanced users, boot time was good, device support was good for the systems I tested on (although it's high time we invested in some oddball systems to test on. Most of the hardware here is fairly standard and needs to be noted) and my overall opinion of this release is strong." A very good review and plenty of screenshots - read more at MadPenguin.org.

Two Reviews of Mandrakelinux 10.1 for x86_64 |
OSNews and Linux Weekly News have published reviews of the 64-bit edition of Mandrakelinux 10.1. OSNews: "I have to say I am quite impressed with Mandrakes offering this time around. Never have I used a more feature packed and useful distro before. I was delighted that for the most part it replaced my Windows XP system for work use. Mandrake Linux x64 is a smooth ride thats well worth the price of admission." Linux Weekly News: "It is hard to see how Mandrakelinux will compete with other 64-bit distributions on the market, especially with the likes of Fedora, but also Debian or Gentoo, which are free of cost and available for download immediately after release. Mandrakelinux 10.1 X86-64 is not a bad product, but it is marred by lack of polish and some unnecessary commercial tricks."

This is the first review of the recently released Mandrakelinux 10.1 Official Edition, by Linux Tips For Free: "The Drake family has been expanded, for instance with drakroam, a tool for laptop users on the move to keep track of different networks. A new appearance is made by the network monitor on the system tray, for easy network connectivity management, along with an applet for Mandrakeonline, a new Mandrakesoft (paid) service." MandrakeSoft: An Inside Look |
From NewsForge: "NewsForge: Mandrakelinux 10 Community Edition was simply a public beta with a fancy name, right? Gaël Duval: Calling Mandrakelinux 10.0 Community a beta is the same as calling previous final releases of Mandrakelinux a beta. In the past we learned that you can have the biggest team of testers in the world before a final release, there will always be people who have issues with a special hardware or in a special situation. There could also be very bad issues that happen after a release, such as the LG bug in Mandrakelinux 9.2. We wanted to improve all that." The above is from a long interview with MandrakeSoft CEO François Bancilhon, and Mandrakelinux co-founders Jacques Le Marois and Gaël Duval; read the rest here.

Mandrakelinux 10.0 - An Outstanding Effort |
MadPenguin is the next in line with a review of Mandrakelinux 10.0: "Mandrake Linux is making some excellent strides on the desktop and I would like to see that continue, whether I use it or not is irrelevant. Mandrake's success means that Linux will advance onto the desktop as it should. Mandrake's success means that even the people on the most disparate Linux distributions will benefit from their innovation. As long as Mandrake is in business, newcomers will still have choice. It is one of the last standing 'major' distributions and it's here for a reason. Cheers to the developers. Though there are bugs within the system like every other distribution we cannot let that undermine the fact that Mandrake is an innovator." The complete review with screenshots.

If MandrakeSoft pulls it off and fixes the problems above, they got a winner. In fact, I believe that this is the highest score I ever gave to any Linux distro so far." The Linux Tips For Free web site is the first one to review the newly released Mandrakelinux 10.0: "There are sure some things to be improved, ironed out and fixed, but all in all, I can wholeheartedly recommend Mandrake 10.0 - if you don't give it a try you'll never know what you miss out on. As with all things Linux (or even computing), YMMV: your mileage may vary. If you get the same mileage out of Mandrake 10.0 as I do, I'm sure you'll agree that Linux, in this case: Mandrake Linux, is more than ready for your desktop. It sure is for mine. Now if you'll just excuse me, I'm off to renew my club membership. My way to say: thank you Mandrake, for this great Linux distribution." The complete review with screenshots.

Is There Room for Mandrake in the Enterprise? |
This is an interesting analysis from Enterprise Linux IT: "While Mandrake historically has focused on individual users, the company now is targeting the enterprise market. It launched its corporate server -- the company's first business-focused application -- last year. 'This year, we're going to introduce a corporate desktop. Our new version coming out this quarter, 10.0, will include new tools aimed at the corporate market,' Bancilhon said, including an advanced groupware tool. Mandrake just won two lucrative French government contracts, he said, to deploy a total of about 3,000 servers. " The full story.

Significant Change in Mandrake Development Process |
MandrakeSoft has announced changes to the development process of Mandrake Linux: "After the traditional debugging of several Beta and Release Candidates, the final version of 'Mandrake Linux 10.0 Community' will be released in February/March. This version will be available for download and as a DVD-set through e-Commerce. Then a Mandrake Linux 10.0 Stable branch will be opened, based on Mandrake Linux 10.0 Community. Security updates and bug fixes will be applied to this tree and will be publicly available in real time. Two or three months later, in April/May, 'Mandrake Linux 10.0 Official' will be created from the Mandrake 10.0 Stable branch." Read this press release for further details.

MandrakeMove First Impressions: The Human Interface |
OSNews has published a brief review of the MandrakeMove live CD: "Finally, I got to the desktop! At this point, as I had expected, Mandrake was amazing, the applications worked well, they were reasonably fast and it was a ton of fun, but that experience is not the focus of this review. It even installed the proprietary ATI Radeon kernel module, which allowed me to top 2000fps on glxgears. Chromium was working like a charm! Once you get it going, Mandrake hardly ever lets you down!" Mandrake Linux 10 Preview |
OSNews has published a "first look" at Mandrake Cooker Snapshot 20031231. This was made available last week as a pre-release leading towards the upcoming Mandrake Linux 10.0 beta, expected on 15 January: "The system seems stable enough for daily use. The only two things that were acting up were xmms and KOffice. Everything else seems to be working fine. I would like to say here that the speed of the system reduced a bit after using it for 2-3 days. Maybe because of all those log files getting written." The full story.

Review: MandrakeMove RC1 |
PC Techforums has published a brief review of MandrakeMove, a new product by MandrakeSoft, currently in beta testing: "I was a little disappointed that I could not get it to run on my desktop PC, I was also disappointed that I could not get audio working on my laptop. Hopefully these issues will be resolved in the final release. The fact that most of the programs worked right from the start is a plus that cannot be ignored. This is a good tool for someone that is thinking of switching to Linux but wants to get the feel of it first." See the full review with screenshots. On a related note, Mandrake developers have also released a bleeding-edge cooker ISO image "to test the 2.6 kernel, XFree 4.4, kde 3.2, gcc 3.3.2, one ISO." Find it on your favourite mirror: MandrakeLinux-20031217-i586.iso (692MB) or get it via BitTorrent.

Interview with Mandrake Linux Founder Gaël Duval |
LinuxQuestions has published an interview with the founder of Mandrake Linux, Gaël Duval: "It was not serious anymore to release a Linux distribution without a good package management like RPM. I seriously considered to switch to Debian as a base because at the time, Red Hat's reaction was very unclear (as far as I know, forking from a commercial Linux distribution never happened before Mandrake). But back in 1998, Debian's installation procedure was really not friendly at all. As a result, a key success of Mandrake was also that all packages made for Red Hat were compatible with Mandrake, including commercial packages. So the choice of RPM was the good one." The full interview. Another interview with Gaël Duval was recently published at KDE Enterprise.

Review: Mandrake 9.2 Download Edition |
MadPenguin has reviewed Mandrake Linux 9.2, download edition: "Over all this is about what I expected from Mandrake. The install was smooth, configuration seems to be handled well except for the audio. My biggest disappointments are with the preconfigured elements. The K menu is kept short, but not very well thought out for a home desktop. The sound and video don't appear to be any easier to work with than any other distro, as far as I am able to discern. And the system takes longer to boot up and open programs than other distros I've tried, and Windows 2000 on the same machine." The full review. On a related note, the site has also published a Mad Penguin Mandrake 9.2 Peer Review with some interesting and conflicting recommendations.

Moving from Red Hat to Mandrake |
This article by NewsForge might be useful for those considering a switch from the now discontinued Red Hat Linux to another distribution - in this case to Mandrake Linux 9.2: "The Thanksgiving weekend is over and I'm riding a new Linux horse. The major difference between my new steed and the old one is that Mandrake Linux has not given up on the Linux desktop, while Red Hat apparently has. I've had a few minor bumps thus far in the migration from Red Hat to MandrakeLinux, but no more than might be expected. It will take me a little bit of time and effort to become as familiar with urpmi and the Mandrake configuration tools as I've become with the Red Hat counterparts, but all the signs point to no loss at all in functionality, security, or ease of use." Exclusive ISO Access for Club Members? |
The much awaited release of Mandrake Linux 9.2 is just around the corner, but unless you are a Mandrake Club member, you might have to wait longer. That's according to this post on the Cooker mailing list: "Club members and contributors should have exclusive access to the download edition ISOs. For others, ISOs will be freely available world-wide by the end of October." Another message in the same thread confirms the plan: "It is important to improve the advantages for the members of the club. The download edition will be available for anybody when the boxes will be available." This is a radical departure from Mandrake's previous policies when ISO images were uploaded to mirrors on the day of release. To join the Mandrake Club (US$60 per year), visit this page.

Best Linux Distribution: Mandrake Linux 9.1 |
Open for Business has announced the results of the OfB Open Choice Awards 2003. In the "Best Linux Distribution" category, the winner is Mandrake Linux 9.1: "During our testing, Mandrake Linux 9.1 was the only distribution that presented no real problems during installation. Furthermore, Mandrake's excellent URPMI system, which is similar to apt-get, makes it easy to keep systems up-to-date with both Mandrake and third party packages (including your own custom ones, if you wish to deploy non-standard software). Mandrake also offers an extremely easy to use set of configuration tools to administer the system with. We are especially impressed with the latest releases of the printer and scanner control panels, however virtually all of the tools are well designed and easy to use. In all, we think Mandrake Linux provides the best desktop distribution available right now, not to mention a worthy server option." The complete story.

Interview with Gaël Duval, Founder of Mandrake Linux |
This is an interview with Mandrake's founder Gaël Duval, originally published by clubic.com in French, but now also translated into English: "Mandrake accounts for between 15% and 25% of all Linux distributions used in the world. So if we evaluate the number of Linux users to 18 million, as does LinuxCounter.org, we can then deduce the number of Mandrake users being approximatively 3.6 million. As a percentage of the total number of PC users, it remains a very modest number, but we've been continually progressing for 5 years." Read the complete interview in French or English.

A Free Desktop for Free People |
Open for Business continues to explore Mandrake Linux 9.1 with an in-depth look at installation, usage and performance, and also provides a quick set of tips-and-tricks for getting started with Mandrake 9.1: "All in all, this reviewer thinks that Mandrake 9.1 is a winner, and with already two Cooker betas and a release candidate out of the oven paving the way for Mandrake 9.2, one could only hope that the next version will follow this trend. This reviewer feels confident in recommending it for wide desktop deployment provided that the system administrator can get around the issues raised in this review. With speed, stability, ease of use, tons of software, and especially freedom, Mandrake is right now the cream of the crop of current GNU/Linux distributions. Way to go, Mandrake." A Galaxy of Possibility: Mandrake 9.1 ProSuite |
Open for Business has published a review of Mandrake Linux 9.1 ProSuite Edition: "Although Mandrake Linux 9.2 is now on the horizon, 9.1 ProSuite is still an excellent choice if you are in the need of a solution within the next few months. Even assuming that Mandrake's release schedule follows its normal course, it will likely be about the middle of the fourth quarter before the next ProSuite hits the streets. Moreover, thanks to Mandrake's well-designed URPMI package management, moving to a new release when it becomes available can be achieved remotely and without even rebooting the target systems." HP Taps Mandrake for Desktops |
This is a nice long review and a good newbie guide to installing and using Mandrake Linux 9.1, as written by open-mag.com: "At first, the feel of Mandrake can be very off-putting and it's easy to dismiss it as quirky or even broken. Nothing could be further from the truth. Like an exquisite bottle of Petrus, Mandrake comes out big and massive. To savor the subtle undertones, you need to let this one breathe, and breathe a lot. No rush to judgement is allowed here; for that judgement may be sadly flawed. Mandrake needs to be savored and allowed to come alive. Do this and you may discover the perfect replacement for Windows on the desktop." See the complete review with screenshots.

The first beta release of the upcoming Mandrake Linux 9.2 is out: "This time the first beta comes on three ISOs, and we are going for stability rather than new features. Nevertheless, you'll find out that this beta contains plenty of updated software: Kernel 2.4.21, GCC 3.3.1 , Mozilla 1.4, KDE 3.1.2, Evolution 1.4.3, XFree86 4.3, Apache 2.0.47, Galeon 1.3.6... All the reporting goes over http://qa.mandrakesoft.com. Developers (and such) are invited to join the discussion on cooker list, and there is also a #mdk-cooker IRC channel at irc.freenode.net. Why Mandrake Linux is Better than MS Windows |
MozillaQuest interviews Mandrake's Gaël Duval about the increasing popularity of Linux and the reasons for its growing acceptance: "We believe customers are going to chose Mandrake Linux systems more and more instead of proprietary operating systems, because customers need an affordable operating system built on public specifications, shipped in standard with everything needed for daily office work and modern multimedia tasks, and because customers need a stable and secure operating system that cannot be infected with all the viruses that are commonly received every day in email attachments and at other places on the Internet." Update about MandrakeSoft Status |
"As most of you know, MandrakeSoft filed for Chapter 11 protection at the end of January 2003. This meant that we were granted a court appointed administrator and given the opportunity to renegotiate our liabilities. This process is running smoothly, and we are happy to report that since January MandrakeSoft has been 'cash-flow positive'. Our immediate goal is to exit from this status before the end of the current year. Agreed, this is an aggressive schedule, but this is the plan that I am focused on, and I strongly believe it is achievable." Mandrake's Good Financial News |
MozillaQuest interviews Mandrake's founder Gaël Duval about MandrakeSoft's current financial status, MandrakeClustering, the company's home and enterprise products lineup: "Q: How are you coming along with finances and the bankruptcy? A: No 'big news', but we have nearly finished our internal restructuring, with a strong commitment to doing business. We should be out of the "chapter-11" protection in about 8 months (it takes time!). The situation is really better than before for two reasons: 1) MandrakeSoft reorganization is nearly finished and 2) we have focused much on the business side." The full interview.

Review: Mandrake Linux 9.1 for Advanced Users |
Väinö Järvelä has sent us a link to his review of Mandrake Linux 9.1, from the point of view of an advanced Linux user: "Mandrake's configuration tools are very nice. When you start the configurator (Drakconf), it asks for root password and loads up a configuration menu (screenshot) where you can choose what you want to do. The main categories are Boot, Hardware, Mount Points, Network Internet, Security, System and Software Management. All the tools work really well, and save a lot of time from typing the configs. For example 'Set Samba mount points' searches for Samba mounts which you can select to apply to /etc/fstab." The complete review.

Mandrake the Music Man |

The Peterborough LUG looks at Mandrake Linux 9.1 from the point of view of a multimedia user: "Mandrake has won my undying support this time." The story continues: "If you tend to use a computer as your music centre, and you are unsure of which Linux distribution to install, give serious consideration to Mandrake, especially if you are migrating from Mac or Microsoft. With Mandrake, the software is all there - no extra purchases, no downloads, no installation hassles. And it works without changes. Reboot your machine and make music. Here's what I tested, and why I was amazed." The full review with a number of screenshots is right here. Enjoy!

TweakHound reviews Mandrake Linux 9.1 PowerPack: "My whining aside I really love using Mandrake Linux 9.1. Why else would I load it on 3 of my computers? Mandrake Linux is easier to use, more powerful, and more compatible than ever. While offering a great computing experience now, it also portends of an exciting future for Linux and Mandrake Linux. Mandrake 9.1: Can installation get any easier? |
Joe Barr at LinuxWorld installs Mandrake Linux 9.1 and takes notes along the way: "I received a review copy of Mandrake Linux PowerPack 9.1 last week. I was happy to see it, but as I noted in the story about my frugal Red Hat 9 upgrade a couple of weeks ago, I'm a little hardware-challenged at the moment. Did I let that stop me? Of course not! When the going gets tough, I did what I usually do, I begged my long-suffering girlfriend, Susan, for help. Sure enough, she allowed me to use the well-traveled Sony laptop in her possession to replace the Red Hat 8 installation with Mandrake 9.1. Her only requirement was that I not lose any of her data." Review: Mandrake Linux 9.1 Download Edition |
Australia's LinuxWorld has reviewed Mandrake Linux 9.1 download edition: "The most obvious new feature is the significant visual overhaul that has taken place. Both GNOME and KDE by default use a new, very attractive, theme called Galaxy. The visual overhaul has also been extended to Mandrake's Drakconf configuration tools. The Mandrake Control Center now features a new layout and lengthy explanations of each of its functions, making it much easier to configure most hardware devices. Windows integration has been tightened with the NTFS partition resizing tool. The Mandrake Control Center is now able to search for and install fonts from any Windows partition, a great feature for graphic designers with large font collections." The complete review.

Mandrake Linux PowerPack Edition 9.1 |
CNET reviews the PowerPack edition of the recently released Mandrake Linux 9.1: "With version 9.1 of its Linux distribution, MandrakeSoft has come as close as anyone to making Linux truly competitive with Windows. How? Mandrake Linux 9.1's relatively easy installation process isn't the reason; after all, easy, graphical installs have become the norm for recent Linux distributions, such as Red Hat Linux 8.0 and SuSE Linux 8.1. Believe it or not, Mandrake's fonts make all the difference." This is the start of the multi-page review with screenshots and user comments.

Mandrake Reviews and Interviews |

Mandrake's new release is generating plenty of interest and here we have a couple of related links. The first one is a review by TinyMinds: "Without a doubt this is the most polished and professional looking release of Mandrake yet. The hardware detection is superb and with the exception of closed-source NVidia drivers, the installer had no problem configuring my hardware." The second link is an interview with Gaël Duval, co-founder of MandrakeSoft, by OSNews: "It seems that after a break, Linux is gaining much momentum again nowadays. So I think things are going to go faster than expected, and I'm pretty confident that we're going to see Linux more and more in action everywhere."

Mandrake Linux 9.1 Review |
OSNews is the first publication to review the upcoming Mandrake Linux 9.1: "With this release I see a very serious and very respectable effort from MandrakeSoft to create a better Mandrake Linux. It is just obvious that this is not 'just another release', it really feels that it had extra care. A lot of things remain unresolved in the desktop area though, like the inconsistency found in the main desktop environment (KDE); notably, the context menus on the desktop and Konqueror and the bugs encountered and detailed above. This is part of the Linux platform evolution of course, so future Mandrake Linux versions are destined to become better with time." The rest of the review is available here. I was right about the Mandrake hysteria, no doubt ;-)

Interview with Gaël Duval on Mandrake Linux 9.1 |
TweakHound talks to Mandrake's co-founder Gaël Duval about the soon-to-be-released Mandrake Linux 9.1: "Mandrake 9.1 is a major release because it provides very visible changes. We have worked much on improving the ergonomics and the look of Mandrake. So users are going to find a new installation procedure which is much more simple than the previous one. It is mostly automated and needs very little information from the user. Anyway, we wanted to keep intact the power of the previous installer so we included several 'expert buttons' everywhere, which lead to more sophisticated configuration areas." Development Release: Mandrake Linux 9.1 RC2 |
As announced earlier on the cooker list, a new (and possibly last) release candidate of Mandrake Linux 9.1 is now available for download. The final release, expected by the middle of March, is likely to be a promising one with a number of interesting new features. Among them is NTFS partition resizer (a rare feature among distribution, Xandros is the only other one offering it), ACPI support for notebooks, supermount, zeroconf, a new "Galaxy" theme as well as all the recent software releases, such as XFree86 4.3.0, Gnome 2.2, KDE 3.1 and Mozilla 1.3, just to name a few. Two more weeks to test it out, so here come the usual quick download links for your convenience: MandrakeLinux-9.1rc2-CD1.i586.iso (651MB), MandrakeLinux-9.1rc2-CD2.i586.iso (650MB), MandrakeLinux-9.1rc2-CD3.i586.iso (648MB). Mandrake 9.1 RC1 - Desktop, Laptop, Small Server: a Three-In-One Review |
Mandrake Linux 9.1 RC1 was released without fanfare on Tuesday 18 February afternoon in Paris, and as the ISO images percolated through the various mirrors worldwide, I prepared my hardware for another review of the latest pre-release of MandrakeSoft's "swiss-knife" Linux distribution. My previous articles have dealt exclusively with Mandrake's use on the desktop. This time around, I tested Mandrake 9.1 RC1 on three different platforms: a home use mid-range desktop workstation, my trusty old-and-battered Dell laptop, and last but not least a dual Celeron homebuilt SMP box nowadays used as a file server and test rig. Mandrake in the News |
There is no doubt that MandrakeSoft's financial crisis has attracted plenty of opinions, analyses and suggestions from users and journalists alike. Here is the latest roundup: NewsForge: "Well, I am guilty as charged in the potential demise of Mandrake. You see, I am one of those leeches who likes to get something for nothing. I burned the download version of Mandrake 9.0 and installed it on my old Athlon. No money paid to Mandrake. Thanks guys :) I can even get access to their update servers for nowt, zilch, nada. They are most kind and generous. They are nearly bankrupt." Ben Reser Rants: "I think that we, as a community, have the ability to produce the same high quality distribution on our own. Many things in Mandrake are already handled by volunteers. Why not make donations to a non-profit organization that would pay employees for what is needed?" An interesting proposal, also being discussed on Slashdot: "A Community Takeover of Mandrake?" And finally, the readers of PCLinuxOnline, perhaps the best Linux community site on the Internet, also offer a few ideas regarding Mandrake's future.

Review: Mandrake Linux 9.1 Beta 1 |
Mandrake Linux 9.1, a GNU/Linux distribution in the making, is currently under intensive development. This review is an attempt to compare its first beta to Mandrake Linux 9.0, which I have been using for several months. What are the main improvements? The major difference as I can see between the two releases is that MandrakeSoft has updated practically all the packages in 9.0. In the process they have solved a number of small but annoying bugs that plagued 9.0, while keeping the qualities that users have come to appreciate in their various releases: ease of installation, speed and usability.

Desktop Dreams in the Wake of MandrakeSoft's Bankruptcy |
A commentary from Open for Business talks about the future of Linux on the desktop and how the unfortunate event of Mandrake's financial surrender affects its perception by the world at large: "Thus, it is my opinion that not only is the GNU/Linux desktop going to stick around (even if it doesn't get much respect), but that MandrakeSoft has proven a great example of what Free Software can be. We have a lot to thank this company for, not the least of which is pioneering the easy to use Linux desktop. Whether or not the company clears its bankruptcy reorganization -- and I sincerely hope it does -- it has helped to clear out all of the myths I listed above. Even if the company fails to recover, its management's wonderful commitment to the Free Software community means that its work will never be for naught." The full story.

Review: A Critical Look at Mandrake 9.0 |
As part of its Desktop Distribution Shootout, Open for Business reviews Mandrake Linux 9.0: "There is no end of things that one might say of Mandrake and many of them necessarily will have to be skipped. In general, I see that Mandrake, with its strong commitment to producing a 100% Free Software distribution of GNU/Linux and emphasis on the desktop could very well be the killer distribution and a serious contender for the post of the top grassroots distribution. Already Mandrake is first in several informal polls and the community of users is growing. Better yet, Mandrake has shown repeatedly that it cares for its users. And finally, they released Mandrake 8.2, which is such a solid and stable distribution that it might be the best GNU/Linux distribution ever released yet." This is the link to the complete review with screenshots and user comments.

Review: Mandrake Linux 9.0 |
TechSeekers looks at Mandrake Linux 9.0 in this 7-page review: "Mandrake is pure Linux with a really nice configuration utility. However my first impressions of it were not good. All the icons promoting Mandrake sites on the desktop are unnecessary and take up space. They were deleted quickly. The menu should be better thought out, something Red Hat has done with its newest 8.0 offering. Red Hat 7.3's menu layout was nearly as bad as Mandrakes. Although i do have to give Mandrake credit for their 'What To Do' menu item. Now if only they'd use that as the main menu they would be in a better position, however I'd guess they'd get slated for doing that instead. It's a no win situation and they took the best of both worlds, a fully featured menu with a easy to use menu built in. There is something to be said about catering for everyone." Review: Mandrake Linux 9.0 |
UnixReview has published a comprehensive review of Mandrake Linux 9.0: "While I can't say that I've found the perfect Linux distribution with Mandrake 9.0, it is certainly one that I would recommend to my friends looking to try their first Linux. It is easy to install, easy to use, and friendly. With its great collection of games, desktop productivity and office applications, as well as 3D and multimedia support, it makes the transition from Windows pretty painless. In terms of cost, if you can't get a friend to pass you a copy or your Internet connection isn't suitable for downloading three CDs, putting out $30 for a boxed set isn't too hard on the pocket book either. For the businesses out there, the friendliness of the Mandrake desktop makes it a great transitional tool. Given that Mandrake Linux is Linux, it's also an excellent server solution." Mandrake 9.0 Speeds into the Installation Lead |
LinuxWorld takes a look at the installation process of Mandrake Linux 9.0 and the author is impressed: "The pluses for Mandrake install are its speed and the absolute ease of obtaining and applying updates. It completely obliterates the Windows contenders in both the update category and the installation of attached devices. Although the speed of the Mandrake update is much more a factor of the download size, it is also easier to perform than the Red Hat update process. Furthermore, the default installation included not one but two graphical environments, and both seem to work exactly as intended. On the issue of office suites, the Mandrake 9.0 PowerPack install left me with both Open Office 1.0 and Star Office 6.0. On the basis of those pluses, and the sheer speed of the process, Mandrake 9.0 nudges Red Hat 8.0 out of first place in the derby." The full story.

Mandrake 9.0 Review |
LinuxLookup takes a brief look at the latest Mandrake release: "Mandrake was the first commercial Linux distro I purchased as a software package, not as a disk in the back of a book. They have successfully sold their operating system to large retail chains and have taken on Microsoft in the marketplace that was on its way to monopoly control a decade ago - the entry-level user. They have teamed up with Transgaming to produce a game-centric version of Linux in an attempt to capture that group of computer users. They have a solid foundation of dedicated users who look forward to each major release. I can't help but believe that Mandrake will continue to move aggressively in the retail sector, eventually establishing them as the Linux brand that most new users have heard about. Success for Mandrake will probably result from sheer determination and a robust operating system." Read the review here.

Review of Mandrake Linux ProSuite Edition 9.0 |
What do you get for your US$199 when you buy Mandrake's ProSuite Edition? OSNews takes a look at the box and its contents: "Then, you will find the main manual, named 'Installation and User Guide' and it is a 190-pages illustrated book. The guide describes the installation in more detail, the KDE environment (e.g. KMenu, browser, email, printing) and then it goes into detail about how to use the Mandrake Tools. The Mandrake tools description take about half of the book. At the end of the book you will find a pretty extensive troubleshooting guide and then then Index. Unfortunately, the index while being alphabetically sorted does not have letter headers to easily identify where a letter starts or stops. Moreover the Index is not as populated as it should have been." Read the rest of the story here.

Fun with Mandrake PowerPack 9.0 |
NewsForge takes a look at the Mandrake 9.0 PowerPack: "Mandrake's PowerPack Edition includes all the software I need to do everything I need to do, including setting up a test server (behind our home hardware firewall) for a site my wife hopes to launch early next year. KDE 3.0 is nice, and it's the desktop I'm using now, just as I used KDE 2.x before, and 1.x before that, but I don't spend a lot of time thinking about my desktop. I am more interested in the applications that cover it, particularly Mozilla, since I work on the Internet all day, and Mozilla 1.1 (included with Mandrake 9.0) is smoother and nicer than the 0.9.8 version included with Mandrake 8.2. In general, I would say 'a little smoother and a little nicer' is the best way to sum up Mandrake 9.0 and the applications included in the PowerPack Edition. Nothing struck me as ground-breaking, and a lot of the traditional Mandrake quirks are still there." The complete story.

Mandrake Linux 9.0 - Desktop Magic You Can Use |
MozillaQuest has published a comprehensive review of Mandrake Linux 9.0: "The MandrakeSoft technicians and magicians have put together a darn nice, easy-to-use, and user-friendly Linux operating system and collection of software applications. The MandrakeSoft folks give you plenty of choices too. You can use Mandrake 9.0 as an easy, friendly desktop Linux, a powerful command-line Linux, or a very cost-effective enterprise and server Linux -- or all of these. Your choice. Mandrake 9.0's overall stability, plus the choices of included desktop suites and applications make Mandrake 9.0 a Linux you can run all the time -- and get your work done or have fun too." ExtremeTech reviews the new Mandrake Linux 9.0: "Mandrake Linux 9.0 from MandrakeSoft has established a reputation for being one of the easiest to install and user-friendly Linux distribution (often called a distro) on the market. That reputation is well deserved, and the latest release continues to improve on what has been previously offered. Like SuSE 8.1, Mandrake 9.0 has excellent documentation, designed with the beginner in mind. allowing the inexperienced or potential Linux user to easily install a system." The complete review.

Linux Mandrake 9.0-Dolphin: The Review |
OSNews takes a critical look at Mandrake 9.0: "Times are changing, and Mandrake hasn't changed much. Having an installer than is better than Slackware's doesn't automatically make you the killer distribution anymore. Heck, having a Control Center doesn't make you the best either these days. It is the overall experience you get when you put all the pieces together. And this is what Mandrake 9.0 lacks today." Mandrake 9.0 gets 7.6 points out of 10; for comparison the same reviewer gave Red Hat 8.0 7.9 points while SuSE 8.1 received 7.8 points. The complete story with screenshots.

Mandrake 9.0 First Impressions |
Two new reviews of Mandrake Linux 9.0. The first one is by NewsForge: "Mandrake 9.0 is pretty. The installation and admin utilities are smoother and more polished than in previous versions. The CD/floppy supermount is great -- far better and easier to use than in earlier Mandrakes. When I get my copy of the PowerPack edition and get all the files in my /home partition moved over from the laptop I'm using now (running Mandrake 8.2), chances are that I'll make it my primary day-to-day distro." The second review is from ratedpc.com: "The more I use Mandrake 9.0 and learn about its new features, the more impressed I get. Should you upgrade? If you have the time, definetly. If not, wait and hope that the good people at Mandrake improve 9.1 and fix the current issues. Remember, this is a .0 release, so you should think twice before installing it on a mission critical system. Otherwise, I think the Mandrake team has done an excellent job with 9.0. Congratulations!"

LinuxHelp.ca is the first site to publish a review of the brand new Mandrake Linux 9.0 and the conclusion is straightforward: "Overall, Mandrake 9.0 is a step in the right direction for Linux use on desktop machines. Distribution Release: Mandrake Linux 9.0 |
The proud announcement has been made, but it's rather too official so let me quote MandrakeForum instead: "Proudly presenting: the best Linux distribution in the known universe! It's also known as Mandrake Linux 9.0, code name 'Dolphin'. It's hot, it's cool, it's something that will make your Windows-running friends turn green from envy. ;-)" That's more like a cork-popping presentation of an exciting release! So congratulations and thank you, Mandrake! Now, the next question on everybody's mind is where to find a fast mirror. Or any mirror. If you are lucky, try this one: Mandrake90-cd1-inst.i586.iso (695MB), Mandrake90-cd2-inst.i586.iso (700MB), Mandrake90-cd3-i18n.i586.iso (456MB). It's not just the mirrors, even the web site of the world's most popular Linux distribution is hard to access, but here are all the important links: press release, the Mandrake 9.0 page with lots of screenshots, mirror list and Mandrake Store: Standard Edition (US$30), Workstation DVD (US$59), PowerPack (US$69) and ProSuite ($199). Have fun!

First look at MandrakeLinux 9.0 |
While we are still waiting for that happy Mandrake 9.0 announcement, there is a "first look" review published by, er, MandrakeForum: "All I expected to see were such things as improved tools, new versions of KDE & Gnome, less bugs, better hardware support, and such. Good to have, but nothing to jump up-and-down from joy. The reality was really different: MandrakeLinux 9.0 is the coolest distro I've ever seen, and I really feel like jumping up-and-down from joy right now! :-))" While not totally unbiased, it's still an excellent read introducing new features and cool changes since Mandrake 8.2. Looking Back, Looking Forward: Gael Duval on Mandrake |
Open for Business has interviewed Gael Duval, Mandrake's co-founder: "I initially planned to release my own Linux distribution in 1997, when I had a lot of free time since I was performing a type of civil service for my country. The project was called 'NetOS', it wa based on Slackware, with the Open Look Window Manager used as the default desktop. When I began to work on that project I was given a retail pack of a famous Linux distribution as a gift for having translated several Linux HOWTOs. This distribution had two powerful features compared to Slackware: It had a great installation procedure (at the time!), and also had a great package management system. At that same time, I discovered the first versions of KDE. Then I decided to delay my 'NetOS' project, started to hack and recompile the installer, packaged KDE and other 'friendly' software, then released the whole thing 8 months later, just after KDE 1.0 was released. " The complete interview.

Distribution Release: Mandrake 9.0 Beta 3 |
The Mandrake beta announcements seem to come on Mondays only, but the beta 3 ISO images are already up for grabs: MandrakeLinux-9.0beta3-CD1.i586.iso (702MB), MandrakeLinux-9.0beta3-CD2.i586.iso (699MB) and MandrakeLinux-9.0beta3-CD3.i586.iso (412MB). Many packages have been upgraded to their latest versions, so this is a good opportunity to check out our Mandrake page which has been overhauled. It now includes a lot more packages and the Cooker column in the table gets automatically synchronised with an FTP server providing the Cooker directory -- things should now be always up-to-date :-) If you have any suggestion, or if you'd like to see other packages included, now is the time to speak up. Eventually all pages will be converted to this format and auto-synchronised with the distributions' development branches.

OfB: Best Distribution - Mandrake 8.2 |
Open for Business has announced the annual Open Choice Awards 2002. There are several categories, but as a distribution-related web site we were most interested to see the "Best Distribution" category: "Mandrake clearly shines over the UnitedLinux distributions by sticking with the community's proven formula - Open Source/Free Software. This is a two-stage commitment on their part. First, all of MandrakeSoft's code is released under the General Public License, and second, the distribution is developed openly, allowing everyone to see and test the latest code from "Cooker." We feel this dedication to Free Software is part of the reason their distribution has such a low amount of bugs and seems so polished." Mandrake 8.2 walks away with top honours while SuSE 8.0 was a runner-up. Many other things of interest in the report so off you go...

Mandrake declines to join United Linux |
As widely reported, MandrakeSoft, the company producing the highly successful Mandrake Linux distribution, has issued a statement explaining the company's position with regards to joining the United Linux initiative: "MandrakeSoft perceives United Linux simply as market consolidation -- several competitors choosing to merge their products -- which is normal for any marketplace. It seems that the individual companies will differentiate themselves by the services offered around their particular brand of "United Linux", and by focusing on a geographical region. We wish good luck to the newly unified Linux companies." The full statement can be found in the investor's area, but it is a good read offering interesting views even if you are not considering an investment in MandrakeSoft.

Distribution Review: Mandrake 8.x |
OSNews reviews Mandrake Linux 8 series: "Mandrake nicely puts a kill icon on your desktop. But it doesn't put it anywhere else. Oh, and don't kill your taskbar, you can't retrieve it either without rebooting. That might sound stupid but ignorant users do seemingly stupid things. Power in the hands of ignorance usually ends in destruction." This review has newbie feel to it, but nevertheless Mandrake should listen to these opinions too in their quest to capture the largest possible audience. Read the review here.

Distribution Review: Mandrake 8.2 PPC |
Mandrake Linux 8.2 for PPC reviewed by iMacLinux: "All in all, I think Mandrake has done it, the first PPC distribution that installed perfectly and automagically on my iBook. I didn't have to manually correct one single setting. And I think that's quite amazing, as it eventually makes a Linux install as effortless as a MacOS or Windows install. Therefore, I believe there can't be any better distribution for unexperienced PPC Linux users than Mandrake PPC. It's worth every cent you spend on it." Read the complete review. On a related note, the same source also reports that SuSE, another Linux PPC distributor has decided to skip the 8.0 version for PPCs, although the company is still committed to the platform. Now I'm going to stop typing and go watch some Quicktime movie trailers, yes, a trial edition of the justifiably famous Crossover 'run Windows browser plugins in Linux' program is included. So are lots of others" Entitled Mandrake 8.2 is boring -- in the best way, the reviewer is impressed: "Now I really am going to stop typing. I've spent longer writing these few words than it took to install and set up this latest Mandrake. That's sure a change from how a Linux install was just a few years ago, eh?" The full review.

MandrakeFirstTime is a wonderful wizard for setting up themes, choosing a graphical environment, and helping set up the Internet Connections. The Control Center continues to be improved. Distribution Release: Mandrake Frequent-3 |
Mandrake's Freq-3 has appeared on mirror sites. Unusually conservative and a lot less bleeding than the previous Mandrake-freq releases, it is essentially Mandrake 8.0 upgraded to kernel 2.4.6, betas of KDE and KOffice, and XFree86 4.1.0, while most other packages were left unchanged.
