Robert Lange has announced the availability of a new (and probably final) release candidate for VectorLinux Linux 7.0: "One last testing release, mainly because upstream had a lot of updates that I decided to take advantage of so we are not old before we are new. The biggest news is the move to the 3.0.4 kernel which adds new functionality and speed. We updated a lot of firmware so more wireless chipsets are supported. Software updates include Firefox to version 7.0.1, Cairo-Dock to 2.4.0, Mesa to 7.10.2 and updates to all the latest X.Org drivers. Those of you using Intel, NVIDIA or ATI graphics are encouraged to try a few games now with the supplied open-source drivers - you might be pleasantly surprised. We squashed a few bugs from the 2.1 release and are looking forward to a dynamic final release following testing of this last RC." Here is the brief release announcement. About VectorLinux
VectorLinux is a small, fast, Intel based Linux operating system for PC style computers. The creators of VectorLinux had a single credo: keep it simple, keep it small and let the end user decide what their operating system is going to be. What has evolved from this concept is perhaps the best little Linux operating system available anywhere. For the casual computer user there is a lightening-fast desktop with graphical programs to handle daily activities from web surfing, sending and receiving email, chatting on IRC to running an FTP server. The power user will be pleased because all the tools are there to compile programs, use the system as a server or perhaps the gateway for home or office computer network. Administrators will be equally pleased because of the small size and memory requirements, so the operating system can be deployed on older machines that have long been forgotten.

Development Release: VectorLinux 7.2 Beta 1 |
Robert Lange has announced the availability of the first beta release of the upcoming VectorLinux 7.2, a Slackware-based distribution with a choice of Xfce ("Standard" edition) and IceWM ("Light" edition) desktop user interfaces: "VectorLinux is proud to announce the first beta release of the 7.2 version of its Standard and Light editions. The release features Light a minimal desktop using IceWM and SeaMonkey as its base of operation. The standard version is Xfce-based with the latest Firefox as the browser. Both versions can be installed with our semi automatic GUI installer or via a text-based installer, depending on your needs. We feature all the latest Linux software from Kodi to LibreOffice, all easily installed with our GUI or text-based package manager. We are using the latest 4.4.14 LTS kernel for the best hardware support and system speed. Last note for the diehards - we are systemd-free." Here is the brief release announcement. Distribution Release: VectorLinux 7.1 "Light" |
Robert Lange has announced the release of VectorLinux 7.1 "Light" edition, a Slackware-based distribution featuring the lightweight IceWM window manager: "Vector Linux Light 7.1 is released and available for download. The 'lightness' of this edition is relative to our Standard edition, and is achieved by using the lightweight IceWM window manager in place of the Xfce desktop environment. You may also choose bare-bones X Window with just TWM. Otherwise the base system and installation experience is the same as Standard. IceWM is old school. It uses a manual approach, much like a stick shift instead of an automatic transmission. It doesn't change unless you tell it to. Configuration is managed by editing plain text files. To make things easier and get you started, some of the most common tweaks are also scripted and controllable by a GUI app. The target audience consists of those who like and prefer IceWM, owners of older computers, and users who want a minimal, yet functional starting point for their own creation. Minimum recommended hardware: an Intel Core class CPU, 1 GB of RAM, and 10 GB of drive space." Here is the brief release announcement. Distribution Release: VectorLinux 7.1 |
It took quite a while to build, but finally it's here - the brand new VectorLinux 7.1. A Slackware-derived distribution with Xfce and without systemd. From the release announcement: "The VectorLinux team is proud to announce the final release of VectorLinux 7.1. This release is the culmination of years of work to make our distro the standard which all others hope to achieve. We have successfully developed an easy-to-use installer that can be used in both GUI and text modes depending on the hardware involved. It requires very little user intervention to achieve a successful installation of the system. We have completely automated our internal package system so that all packages are constantly up-to-date and patched as necessary. The system is available both in 32-bit and 64-bit variants and features the latest linux 3.18.16 LTS kernel. We use the latest Xfce as our GUI desktop with Fluxbox as an alternative. The repository contains the bigger systems like KDE and thousands of other programs easily installed through the tried and trusted gslapt/slaptget package installer." Distribution Release: VectorLinux 7.0 "Light" |
Robert Lange has announced the release of VectorLinux 7.0 "Light" edition, a desktop distribution featuring four lightweight desktop configurations with JWM, IceWM, Openbox and LXDE: "VectorLinux 7.0 Light is completed and released. The term 'Light' is relative. This 4-in-1 edition gives you the choice of several window managers, in progressively heavier configurations. These are layered on top of the VectorLinux 7.0 Standard base, so the expected libraries, toolkits, compilers and codecs remain available. For those who want a starting point for their own customized desktop, there is the 'Barebone' option. It is managed by the super-lightweight JWM, without much fluff. Netsurf, a small and speedy web browser, gives you access to the power of the Internet. Use the included build tools and package manager to download and install the programs of your choice. This configuration has been tested on a Pentium 3 with 128 MB of memory." Read the rest of the release announcement to learn more about the available options. Development Release: VectorLinux 7.0 Alpha 4 |
Robert Lange has announced the availability of the fourth alpha release of VectorLinux 7.0, a Slackware-based distribution for the desktop: "VectorLinux Core 7 alpha 4 is up and ready to test. Sorry to do this but I need to try out one more alpha before we start the beta stage. We had multiple problems with the 3.6 release mostly due to an upgrade to the installer's core system to accommodate the latest kernel releases. Hopefully the install will go without problems this time and I added a few updated packages like XScreenSaver, Grip to rip CDs and DVDs, and a few other core programs. Wicd, the network manager, should work correctly now. I added a few new twists to the overall theme of things, interested to hear any reactions. I know I have thrown a lot of releases at you lately but I would like the final stages to be pretty damn perfect so the betas and release candidates should be quick and painless." Robert Lange has announced the availability of the first alpha release of VectorLinux 7.0: "The development crew is happy to bring you the first core release of VectorLinux 7.0. This is alpha 1 so expect your computer to catch fire and crash and burn... This is all the latest and greatest from Linux from the X.Org server on down. There is nothing fancy here just a console login and doing startx gives you a basic Xfce desktop. There is Firefox, Opera and gFTP to keep you connected and the other basics. There is no gslapt or slapt-get as there is no real repository yet for version 7.0. We would like you brave testers to check for bugs, try building your favorite applications, etc. We have included a new set of plugins to do things like Qt movie trailers, the standard RealPlayer and MS stuff. Development Release: VectorLinux 6.0 Alpha 2 |
Robert Lange has announced the availability of the first public alpha release of VectorLinux 6.0. It's main new feature? A graphical system installer: "VectorLinux Standard 6.0-alpha2 is up and ready to be tested. There are many changes since the first alpha release. The testers were pretty unanimous in stating that GNOME was not the proper desktop environment for the Standard edition and Xfce 4 should remain, with LXDE as the secondary choice. So with this release there is no GNOME and Xfce 4 has been reinstated as the primary desktop. We have spent a tremendous amount of time on the new GUI installer and we really need you to test that part as 80% of our effort has been on improving the installer. The GUI installer is not complete yet, but we need your feedback as to the present state of development." Read the rest of the release announcement for more details. I have updated OpenOffice.org to version 2 and fixed the NVIDIA drivers - they should auto-configure now. Downgraded udev to 071 (was causing hotplug to hang somehow). That's it for now, please keep the bug reports coming." Here is the complete release announcement. Download: VL-5.1-LIVE-beta2.iso (603MB, MD5).

Development Release: VectorLinux 5.1 RC2 (SOHO) |
The second -- and probably the last -- release candidate of the SOHO edition of VectorLinux Linux 5.1 has been released: "SOHO-rc2 is available and ready for testing before we go final. Lots of little fixes to tune up our default firewall with Samba, CUPS and hplip. The x-11 base system was updated to patch 4. Larry Gagnon's menu fixes are in. Joe1962's new vl-hot is in for USB mountable devices. The bootsplash was updated so the animation goes away correctly (still needs a little tweaking). There are some artwork updates to be done but overall looks good. XFce should be able to do its themes now and the default look of XFce was modified. So brave ones download, install and report back the results of your findings." The release announcement. Download: VLSOHO-5.1-rc2.iso (688MB, MD5).

Development Release: VectorLinux 5.1 RC1 (SOHO) |
The first release candidate of VectorLinux 5.1 SOHO edition is out: "Proud to say JohnB and yours truly have released SOHO 5.1 rc1. Lots of work went into bug fixes since the beta release. This should be close to a final but we will let you make that judgement. Here's the list of what has been done: updated kdebase with a patch so command center works correctly; root login fixed for virtual terminals; new MPlayer without Samba dependency; vliloconf fixed so LILO installs properly with or without boot splash; new boot splash graphics; hopefully KDM issues are fixed; updated kernel source, please try your NVIDIA driver now; more hotplug fixes; some boot time tweaks to get things up faster...." Development Release: VectorLinux 5.1 Beta 2 (SOHO) |
The SOHO edition of VectorLinux continues its development process with the release of a new beta: "Beta2 of SOHO 5.1 is up and ready for more testing. We made a concerted effort to fix the major stuff in beta1 and hopefully we have done that. Early reports say the pesky KDE 'end current session' bug is gone for some but remains for others. This will need further attention. On the new front you now have the option to use a splash screen on boot-up versus the old text message screen; just pay attention to your LILO configuration during the install and choose 'bootsplash' from the modes menu. We have updated Firefox to 1.5 with some new plugin updates as well. Samba and CUPS have been updated...." Read the rest of the release announcement for more details. Development Release: VectorLinux 5.1 Beta 1 (SOHO) |
The first beta of the SOHO edition of VectorLinux 5.1 has been released: "You now have the first beta of SOHO 5.1 to sink your teeth into. Johnb316 and I have been working hard on this behind the scenes and feel it's ready for peer review, bug testing and constructive criticism. This is based on 5.1 standard with updates to the kernel (2.6.13) and OpenOffice.org 2.0. This is a complete KDE 3.4.2 workstation with XFce 4 included as an alternate desktop. To keep this to a one CD install some things had to go, most noticeably IceWM and RoxFiler, but they are only a 'gslapt' away. What we haven't included but will before final is a custom boot splash." Reviews: A Distro Enlightened - VectorLinux 5.1 Deluxe |
Mad Penguin has published a new review of the recently released VectorLinux 5.1 "Deluxe" edition: "VectorLinux could very well become a distro that would be perfect for distribution to organizations or individuals who are recycling older equipment and donating it to these types of charities. Let's face it. Under normal circumstances this type of equipment would be sent straight to the landfill. Why? Well, it doesn't run the latest Windows software anymore because it's 'so old'. Rather than serving no purpose at all, the PCs we're tossing out can again serve a real purpose." The 3-page review with screenshots starts here.

Reviews: Extreme Makeover - VectorLinux 5 SOHO |
MadPenguin has published a review of VectorLinux 5.0, SOHO Edition: "VectorLinux is a must for anyone yearning to get the most out of their hardware and avoid lengthy compile times associated with source-based distros. It's built on Slackware Linux so you've got the solid foundation in place with simple package management and ease of upgrades. It may not be completely newbie-proof, but that shouldn't scare away those with the desire to learn. It's a great system to learn on as well. I learned a lot from Slackware, so you can too. So break out that old laptop or desktop and dust it off. Install VectorLinux and realize what you could've been doing with that machine all this time it's been in your closet." VectorLinux 4.3 - Rocket Fueled Slackware |
Mad Penguin has taken to the task of reviewing the recently released VectorLinux 4.3: "VectorLinux can (and always has been able to) take an old dinosaur of a computer and render it just as useful as the day that it was new. Seriously. Built on Slackware Linux, one of the most stable and best performing distributions available today, VectorLinux has been optimized to the point that it outperforms every other distro I've tested on older equipment... without fail. So, if you've got an older computer that you were getting ready to throw out the door, dust it off, purchase a copy of VectorLinux, and bring it back to life." The full review with screenshots.

Development Release: Vector Linux 5.0 RC2 |

The developers of Vector Linux have announced that work has started on a next release, version 5.0: "Well, it's time to start looking forward to the next version of VL. Our friend Kocil has supplied a very basic ISO based on slackware-current. Kocil has made some very nice changes to the install and carved out a very basic system that we as developers can use as a base to make the next VL and SOHO. Again this is very alpha and there is no GTK2 only IceWM as a window manager for Xorg. This is a testing ground and a base to start making the packages we want for VL and SOHO 5.0. It does include the latest Xorg 6.8.1 and I have put up the latest GTK2 libraries for installation. So let the downloading begin...." A new version of Vector Linux is under development: "Well here we go. I have beta2 of Vector-4.3 up at the FTP site. For now download burn and install and lets have some active feedback. I would really like the whole dev community to rally behind 4.3 and lets get it out to the general population as soon as we can. Big diffs between 4.0 and 4.3 include 2.6.7 kernel, rox-panel instead of dfm for icons, alsa-sound, based on slack-9.1 so newer compiler and glibc, xfce-4.x and fluxbox-0.9.9. A First Look at Vector Linux 4.0, SOHO Edition |
Linux.com has published a review of Vector Linux 4.0, SOHO edition: "Vector Linux has always interested me because of its purpose and origin: a simplified distribution from a Slackware base. Last month Vector's developers announced the first release candidate for Vector Linux 4.0 SOHO edition. Since, to quote Vector's main page, Slackware Linux has always been 'about as user-friendly as a coiled rattlesnake,' I was curious to see how Vector Linux addressed these issues for home users while still keeping the Slackware reliability and speed." Development Release: Vector Linux LiveCD 4.0 RC |
The Vector Linux project's own live CD has entered its final development stage: "I have just finished with VL 4.0 Live. Some known issues: there will be some messages about /etc/modules.conf and the module dependencies being out of sync. I redid the modules.conf but didn't do a depmod and remake the lib cram file. This won't affect anything other than produce the annoying messages. Networking will not automatically do DHCP as I forgot to set it up that way - it still lets you set up networking like a normal install though. Other than that it is fine. I used the 4.0 Live CD to upload the iso and md5 to the ftp site and I am using it right now to post this announcement so I know it works pretty well." Read the rest of the message. Vector Linux 4.0 Review and Interview |
TuxReports has reviewed Vector Linux 4.0, download edition: "This project is exciting. As the community builds and more people install it, more power will be introduced. The developers have the right attitude regarding the values of Linux; sharing and discussions. You will find all levels of knowledge in their community and clearly everyone interested (and has the right social skills) can interact." The review is accompanied by a brief interview with Robert S Lange, the lead developer of Vector Linux: "Q: When did you start VL? A: I believe it was a cold night in the winter of 1997 when Windows 95 once again went south. I had looked at FreeBSD and Slackware, ultimately chose FreeBSD and got it loaded, compiled a kernel, then I was hooked. I spent about 3 months with FreeBSD but I wanted a more desktop-centric system than FreeBSD offered at the time." Read the rest of the review and interview at TuxReports.

Vector Linux 4.0 Review |
OSNews has published a review of Vector Linux 4.0: "The downloadable version of Vector Linux 4 is a fantastic distribution, especially when you consider the fact that the size of the ISO is only 229MB. It comes with all the software an average user would need but none of the extras. It gives you a very fast and very stable system and doesn't require a whole lot of configuration to get running. Aside from the problems with my mouse and the keyboard stopping during installation (see the Installation section above), I had no troubles with Vector, and hence it is an appropriate distribution for those with a least a little experience of Linux." Review: Vector Linux 4.0 |
PCBurn has reviewed the recently released Vector Linux 4.0: "So far, Vector looks pretty much like a standard Linux installation only lighter, right? Exactly. But what struck me wasn't so much the speed of application loading. Although boot time is quick, application load up is zippy, and loading into a graphical interface is virtually lag free, I've come to expect that from a hand tuned instance of Linux. What caught my attention with Vector Linux were the things that are missing. No messy setup process choosing to install package A, B, or C for the same function. No guessing at what would be starting when I rebooted the system. No figuring out what icons are for and what on earth some of the oddly named applications do, exactly. No system bloat of 10 different applications to handle any possible preference of what to use for a specific task. Just a clean, uncluttered 650MB worth of software, ready to go." Review: Vector Linux 4 Against All Odds |
MadPenguin has reviewed the recently released Vector Linux 4.0: "Overall, I would give this distro a four out of five stars. Vector Linux is very close to perfection, but is still a bit rough around the edges and needs a little fine tuning. The most important part is that the foundation is there and it's solid. There is no disputing that Vector Linux is and will be a continually evolving, if not powerful, force in the Linux world. I have been a fan from the first time I booted into a Vector Linux system and I will always appreciate the work they do. It is one of the few distros that shows a solid direction, leadership, and the ability to withstand the test of time. Even with the few flaws I have mentioned, it still stands head and shoulders above many other distros." The 2-page review with screenshots.

The second release candidate of Vector Linux 4.0 has been released: "This fixes most bugs found in rc-1 including a new wget, SDL-lib, SDL-mixer and some rewritten config tools (thank you Tony). There is also an updated sylpheed with ssl and gtk2 support and the latest dillo (I think). The DRM modules are now there for 3D acceleration. Vasm has been reworked slightly and added libart_lgpl to the mix for you KDE lovers. Things that didn't get done include normal users still can't shut down the system and there will still be some pppd issues (but pppd really should be started as root but oh well I'll make it easy on you for the final)." Development Release: Vector Linux 4.0 RC1 |
The Vector Linux developers have released the first release candidate of Vector Linux 4.0: "I and the rest of our merry little team are proud to let loose the release candidate-1 of VL 4.0. This should hopefully address all the mentioned bugs found in the first release. A couple of things are still outstanding - number one is auto international keyboard support in X and we think we already have a solution. The second - not all the wm menus are perfect yet but other than that looking really good. So again give it a try and let us know your results and comments. I would like someone or someones to maybe publish this announcement on distrowatch and whatever Linux news sites you might visit so we get a good amount of feedback before the final release." Review: Vector Linux 3.2 SOHO |
The btvillarin.com web site has posted a comprehensive review of Vector Linux 3.2: "After all this, can I recommend Vector Linux 3.2 SOHO? Definitely maybe. I like it much better than Red Hat 8.0's effort to wed KDE and GNOME desktops. KDE on Vector Linux seems more responsive somehow than its Red Hat counterpart. I for one are going to stick with VL, but VL doesn't strike me as the ultimate Linux-for-everyone distro. I'd recommend Vector Linux as a learning experience. Clearly, there has been a lot of effort to put together a stable one-CD "mini" distro to cater for the casual user. In my opinion the results are impressive as a whole. But there are many rough edges left." Read the complete review with screenshots.

The Quest for the Perfect Linux System... |
Don't be misled by the icon on the left - this is one of the most comprehensive reviews of the various Linux distributions (and other operating systems), including Red Hat, Mandrake, Yoper, Ark, Gentoo and a few others. The author is most impressed with Vector Linux: "Vector Linux is rock-solid, and mega-fast. Especially when you consider that it, like Redhat is an i386 optimized distribution! Vector gives me most of the programs that I would normally install anyway, and it gives them to me without complaining at all about dependencies. Add to that the fact that Vector looks good with its anti-aliased fonts and system-wide integration, and you've got a winner of a distribution!" The 12-page story starts here.

Vector Linux 3.2 Deluxe Ripped Apart |
MadPenguin reviews the newly released Vector Linux 3.2: "My experience with Vector Linux 3.2 thus far has been a great ride. Although I found a couple of bumps along the way, they were minimal and easily fixed with either common sense or a visit and a post to the Vector Linux forums. Their message boards are moderated by some knowledgeable, friendly developers who are always willing to help their customers and customers to be. Finally, I must say this: Like anything else that is open source, please buy a copy if you like it. Vector offers a minimal download edition you can try out (get it from any of their mirrors) to see if you might be able to call it home. If you do, buy a copy from them. Read the complete review.

Interview with Robert Lange, Vector Linux |
The tinyminds.org web site has published an interview with Robert S Lange, the creator and lead developer of Vector Linux: "Vector's popularity stems from the large base of old hardware users. All of the major distros have pretty much abandoned the old hardware users so I think I have a real responsibility to keep the Vector Linux option open to those people. Vector has really branched into two systems; one for the old hardware and one for the new hardware. As long as I can keep my sanity I will do my best to maintain both areas. The big distros are going great guns to hide the inner workings of Linux to lure the paying MS minions into a far better experience. This is all well and good, but I would like to keep Vector Linux around for people that want to learn their operating system and really get the most out of it at the risk of getting their hands dirty." Nice interview, see the rest here.

Vector Linux 3.0 Notes |
The ISO image of Vector Linux 3.0 released yesterday is now available for download: VL3.0dl.iso (212MB). I've given it a partition on my hard disk to see what Vector is all about. The installation is very Slackware-like except for some nice configuration tools. It includes two Window managers - IceWM and xfce, both of them are very light-weight so the system feels incredibly fast if you normally use KDE or GNOME. The Vector's web site claims that it will run on a machine with only 16MB of memory! You don't get much choice in terms of applications; only one of each kind is present so you get Opera for browsing, Sylpheed for email, AbiWord for word processing, etc. I do have the package list now, so visit the Vector page to see the list of included applications. Vector Linux is a very fast and light-weight distribution, so do give it a try; besides the download option you can also order the CD with documentation and extra applications for US$20.

Distribution Release: Vector Linux 3.0 |
Vector Linux 3.0 is out: "We are proud to release the 3.0 incarnation of Vector Linux. This is a big rewrite as we made the decision to go completely Slackware compatible and also LSB compliant. This gives us the ability to update as Slack does and keep up with security fixes and other vulnerabilities on a more timely basis. This still looks and feels like Vector Linux but the base is all Slackware and includes all of Slackware's configuration tools like 'pkgtool' so you slackers or ex-slackers should feel right at home. All the things that make VL unique are still there and the size only grew about 20 megs from last release of 2.5." There are no ISO images as yet, but these installation instruction will tell you what to download and how to install Vector Linux 3.0. These are the download directories: ftp or http.

Distribution Release: Vector 2.5 |
Vector Linux 2.5 final is out: "The installation was a joy to behold, the program mix was perfect and God is using Vector Linux now. So with little trepidation we announce the release of VECTOR LINUX 2.5 final." You are encouraged to buy the official CD (US$20) via mail order as "Vector Linux is experiencing troubled financial times and our only source of revenue for this project is the sale of CD's" No ISO images are provided, but the complete package directory with installation instructions are available on the ibiblio.org mirror. The release comes in three flavours: as a base console system - veclinux.bz2 (40MB), as a graphical system with XFree86 4.2.0 - XF-4.2.bz2 (63MB) and as a graphical system with XFree86 3.3.6 - XF-3.3.6.bz2 (42MB). Unfortunately, I haven't been able to obtain the package list - Vector Linux is one of those distributions that make it extremely hard to get to package versions, even after installing the system and my direct requests to maintainers have so far been futile. Visit the distribution's home page and also consult the recent review by Linuxdot.
