New packages in the 'extra' ISO image are php_suhosin, a PHP built with suhosin-patch, rutorrent - another web front-end to rTorrent, and OpenSSH built with PAM support. Distribution Release: Superb Mini Server 2.0.9 |
A new build of Superb Mini Server (SMS), version 2.0.9, has been released. This new version of the Slackware-based distribution for servers, brings a new Linux kernel and upgrades to most server packages, while leaving the base system unchanged. "Superb Mini Server version 2.0.9 released (Linux kernel 4.4.22). This release brings upgrades to server packages and the latest LTS kernel branch, version 4.4.22. Server packages upgrade include Postfix 3.0.7, Samba 4.5.0, Dovecot 2.2.25, BIND 9.10.4-P3 and MySQL 5.5.52. We still keep Apache httpd 2.2.31 as our default web server, but we moved to PHP 5.6.26 since PHPMyAdmin needed it. Besides, PHP 5.4 has reached end-of-life so mind the new /etc/httpd/php.ini if you are upgrading. Most likely inn our next release we will switch to Apache httpd 2.4 as our default web server, so you better look for migration tips. Apache httpd 2.4 is in the testing repository for those who have switched already. This release also brings support for the Let's Encrypt certificates." Here is the full release announcement. Distribution Release: Superb Mini Server 2.0.8 |
Superb Mini Server (SMS), a Slackware-based distribution for servers, has been upgraded to version 2.0.8. This is a maintenance and security release. "Superb Mini Server version 2.0.8 released (Linux kernel 3.14.40). It has been almost a year and SMS 2.0.8 comes with LTS Linux Kernel 3.14.40 and many server package upgrades. This is a maintenance and security release, many security fixes applied to this release, nothing new though for users that keep their server up to date with SMS-Current. For our default webserver we choose again httpd 2.2.29 but we move to PHP 5.4.40. Apache httpd 5.4.12 with PHP 5.4.40_httpd_2.4 is available int he testing repository. Apache httpd 2.4.12 is quite stable. We don't have PHP 5.6 builds yet for SMS and I don't see a reason yet, but they will come sooner or later. New packages in this release are hostapd, wireless access point daemon, nginx 1.8 and Samba 4.2.1 in testing. We have removed php-json for rtorrent + wtorrent since we now use PHP's built-in json. We have also removed the outdated Linux-HA packages from the distributed ISO images. Postfix got a new major release update 3.0.1 which is backward compatible, but you can always find updated releases for 2.11.x in extra." Distribution Release: Superb Mini Server 2.0.7 |
A new version of Superb Mini Server (SMS), a Slackware-based distribution designed for servers, was released yesterday: "Superb Mini Server version 2.0.7 released (Linux kernel 3.10.41). After almost 8 months we have a new release with LTS 3.10.41 linux kernel, many server upgrades and security fixes, including OpenSSL 1.0.1h. The main reason for the delay, was four hard disk failures. Although I couldn't prepare a release, updates were right on time, regarding security and regular packages updates, so those who track the 'Current' tree will have little to upgrade. For this release we had a dilemma for our web server, to either switch to PHP 5.4 or stay with PHP 5.3. We decided to stay with 5.3 for now, but there is a 'php54' package in extra, built for httpd 2.2.27, if someone wants to upgrade their PHP package, but beware to remove php package first." Distribution Release: Superb Mini Server 2.0.6 |
Superb Mini Server (SMS), a Slackware-based distribution designed for servers, has been updated to version 2.0.6: "Superb Mini Server version 2.0.6 released (Linux kernel 3.4.67). This is a maintenance release focusing on server package updates, such as Postfix 2.10.2, Samba 4.1.0, OpenLDAP 2.4.37, Dovecot 2.2.6, and adding a little VPN touch up to the distribution. For this release we thought best to stay with the 3.4.67 LTS kernel. The latest LTS kernel 3.10.17 is available in the SMS repository if anyone wants to upgrade. The 64-bit live CD ships with the 3.10.17 kernel though. New packages in this release are: OpenConnect client for Cisco's AnyConnect SSL VPN, openl2tp - an L2TP client/server, PPTP point-to-point tunneling protocol client, PPTP point-to-point tunneling protocol server, and strongSwan - an open source IPsec-based VPN solution. As you may notice, we didn't follow Slackware's 'Current' tree and we stay with glibc 2.15 and GCC 4.7.2." Here is the full release announcement. Superb Mini Server (SMS) 2.0.5 has been released. SMS is a Slackware-based distribution designed for servers and featuring Webmin, a web-based system administration utility. From the release announcement: "Superb Mini Server version 2.0.5 released (Linux kernel 3.4.55). SMS-2.0.5 features the latest LTS Linux kernel 3.4.55 and brings several server packages updates such as CUPS 1.6.3, Dovecot 2.2.4, httpd 2.2.25, PHP 5.3.27, Postfix 2.10.1, Samba 4.0.7 and many more. Two bugs fixed in this release since version 2.0.4 are HAL and phpMyAdmin - HAL detection has been restored in KDE fixing empty system:/media issue, and fixed wrong configuration in phpMyAdmin. New packages in this release are Fluxbox window manager - you need to choose it upon installation. MySQL is still our main database server in SMS 2.0.5, the latest MariaDB package is available. Again httpd 2.4.6 and PHP 5.4.17 are available under testing for those who want to upgrade their web server." Download link: SMS64.Native.CD-2.0.5-Install.iso (699MB, MD5). |

Distribution Release: Superb Mini Server 2.0.4 |
Version 2.0.4 of Superb Mini Server (SMS), an updated release of the Slackware-based distribution for servers with Webmin, is out and ready for production use: "Superb Mini Server version 2.0.4 released (Linux kernel 3.4.47). SMS-2.0.4 comes with the latest LTS Linux kernel version 3.4.47, and it brings minor fixes and several updates to server packages, such as Postfix 2.10.0, Dovecot 2.2.2, OpenLDAP 2.4.35, Samba 4.0.6, PHP 5.3.25, httpd 2.2.24. Although it has been a year since httpd 2.4 and PHP 5.4 were released, we decided to keep them out from the stable tree once more, since stability and compatibility is our main goal. New packages in this release are lm_sensors hardware monitor tools; gnu-efi EFI development files and loudmouth XMPP (Jabber) C programming library. Another interesting new feature is a Sendmail build with LDAP support. Although many distributions, including Slackware, have switched to MariaDB, SMS stays with MySQL for now." This is a bug-fix and security release, featuring security enhancements, packages upgrades, new features and the latest 3.2.x branch kernel. In this release we focus, amongst other things, on two recent SMS reviews. We fixed a few bugs in smsconfig and added new features and improvements. Services now force start/stop even if they are disabled, except Sendmail, but beware if services are not enabled they will not auto-start at boot. The same force start/stop feature added in Webmin also. The smsconfig utility also features a backup option, which backs up /etc with xz by date and restores it upon selection by date. SMS 2.0.2 features a secure wizard function to help you secure and optimize your server." Read the rest of the release announcement for more details. SMS 2.0.0 core is based on Slackware 'current' which means that Slackware packages are compatible with SMS as long as they are not dependant on Qt 4 as SMS uses qQt 3. SMS packages are not compatible with Slackware though. Once more we choose Apache HTTPD 2.2.23 and PHP 5.3.17 as our default web server for greater stability and compatibility with all web applications. Apache httpd 2.4.3 and PHP 5.4.7 are available under testing. Major changes include switch to OpenSSL 1.0.x and GnuTLS 3.x. Superb Mini Server (SMS) 1.6.6, a new version of the project's Slackware-based distribution for servers, has been released: "Superb Mini Server version 1.6.6 released (Linux kernel 3.2.20). It's that time again, we have a new kernel, a lot of upgrades, security fixes and some new features. New PHP 5.4.4 and HTTPD 2.4.2 packages are available though, under testing in Extra if someone wants to use them. MySQL has been upgraded to the 5.5.x branch so it needs your attention. If you are upgrading, be sure to backup your /var/lib/mysql folder containing your MySQL databases and restore it after and run mysql_upgrade. Perl has also been upgraded to 5.16, so if you have Perl modules installed by yourself, I would recommend that you remove them and install them again."
