Juergen Daubert has announced the availability of the first release candidate for CRUX 3.0, a keep-it-simple Linux distribution designed for more advanced Linux users: "The CRUX team is pleased to announce the first release candidate of the upcoming CRUX 3.0. More than 11 years after the release of CRUX 0.5 for i686, CRUX 3.0 will be the first release for the x86_64 architecture. We do not have release notes yet, so some notes below: an update from 2.8 i686 to 3.0 is possible but you have to rebuild all installed packages that are not part of the ISO image - we will continue to update the CRUX 2.8 repositories for the near future but encourage all users to update to 3.0; a 32-bit compatibility ports tree is available but not enabled by default; enable CONFIG_IA32_EMULATION in your kernel configuration, without that option you are not able to build 32bit stuff, even a chroot into a 32bit system, e.g. CRUX 2.8, is not possible without it! Please give it a try and report any issues!" Here is the brief release announcement. Download: crux-3.0-rc1.iso (252MB, MD5). |

About CRUX
CRUX is a lightweight, Linux distribution for computers running on 64-bit x86 processors. The distribution is targeted at experienced Linux users. The primary focus of this distribution is "keep it simple", which is reflected in a simple tar.gz-based package system, BSD-style initscripts, and a relatively small collection of trimmed packages. The secondary focus is utilization of new Linux features and recent tools and libraries.

Distribution Release: CRUX 3.7 |
CRUX is a lightweight, Linux distribution for computers running on 64-bit x86 processors. The distribution is targeted at experienced Linux users. The primary focus of this distribution is "keep it simple". The project's latest release is CRUX 3.7 which features version 5.15.55 of the Linux kernel along with updates for the X.Org display software and for Wayland. "CRUX 3.7 comes with a multilib toolchain which includes glibc 2.36, gcc 12.2.0 and binutils 2.39; CRUX 3.7 now includes Wayland 1.21.0; ports continue to default to X.Org, but Wayland can easily be installed alongside and run in either pure Wayland or Xwayland mode; if you decide to run a Wayland session, you will need to enable the 'contrib' collection and rebuild a few ports (for example xorg/mesa) to make it fully available; the ISO image is processed with isohybrid and is suitable for burning on a CD and putting on a USB drive; UEFI support is available during installation with dosfstools, efibootmgr and grub2-efi/syslinux is available during installation; because all bootloaders are in our opt collection now, no bootloader is installed as a core port by default; to give the possibility to select a bootloader we have added a new menu to setup." Additional information is provided in the project's release notes. Download: crux-3.7.iso (1,136MB, SHA256, torrent, pkglist). |

Distribution Release: CRUX 3.6 |
Juergen Daubert has announced the release of CRUX 3.6, the latest stable build of the project's lightweight Linux distribution featuring a straightforward tar.xz-based package system, BSD-style init scripts, and a collection of trimmed packages: "The CRUX team is happy to announce the release of CRUX 3.6. CRUX 3.6 comes with a multilib toolchain which includes glibc 2.32, GCC 10.2.0, Binutils 2.35.1, Linux kernel 5.4.80 (LTS), X.Org 7.7 and X.Org Server 1.20.10. The ISO image is processed with isohybrid and is suitable for burning on a DVD and putting on a USB drive. UEFI support is available during installation with dosfstools, efibootmgr and grub2-efi/syslinux. Because all bootloaders are in our opt collection now, LILO is no longer installed as a core port by default. To give the possibility to select a bootloader we have added a new menu to setup. Important notes: glibc depends at buildtime on Python 3 now, Python 3 and its dependencies have been moved from the opt collection to core; glibc removed rpc and nsl stuff, we've added the libnsl and rpcsvc-proto ports; we renamed openrdate to rdate, jdk to jdk8-bin and mesa3d to mesa...." Distribution Release: CRUX 3.5 |
Matt Housh has announced the release of CRUX 3.5, a new stable version of the project's lightweight, x86-64 optimised Linux distribution featuring a simple tar.gz-based package system, BSD-style init scripts, and a small collection of trimmed packages: "The CRUX team is happy to announce the release of CRUX 3.5. Notable changes include glibc 2.28, GCC 8.3.0 and Binutils 2.32. CRUX 3.5 now also ships with PAM - we've made it as transparent as possible and it will be a good stepping stone for users wanting 2-factor authentication and other fun stuff. Breaking changes include the move of dbus configuration from /usr/etc to /etc, so backup your configurations before updating. Another potential headache may be various projects' move from autotools to newer build systems - glib may cause some problems here and dependent ports will need to be rebuilt. The ISO image is processed with isohybrid and is suitable for burning on a CD and putting on a USB drive. UEFI support is available during installation with dosfstools, efibootmgr and grub2-efi added to the ISO image." See the release announcement, release notes and changelog for more information. The updated CRUX Handbook with detailed installation and configuration instructions is also available. Download link: crux-3.5.iso (644MB, MD5, torrent, pkglist). |

Distribution Release: CRUX 3.4 |
Fredrik Rinnestam has announced the release of CRUX 3.4, a new stable version of the project's lightweight, x86-64 optimised Linux distribution designed for experienced Linux users: "We are happy to finally announce the release of CRUX 3.4. The toolchain has been updated to include glibc 2.27, GCC 7.3.0 and Binutils 2.29.1. CRUX 3.4 ships with a 4.14.40 installation kernel and X.Org 7.7 with X.Org Server 1.20.0. The ISO image is processed with isohybrid and is suitable for burning on a CD and putting on a USB drive. UEFI support is available during installation with dosfstools, efibootmgr and grub2-efi added to the ISO image. Important libraries have been updated to new major versions which are not ABI compatible with the old versions. We strongly advise against manually updating to CRUX 3.4 via ports, since these changes will temporarily break the system. Please note that there may still be packages that need updating which are not included on the ISO image. These packages will need to be updated/rebuilt manually." Distribution Release: CRUX 3.0 |
Juergen Daubert has announced the release of CRUX 3.0, a lightweight, x86-64 optimised Linux distribution targeted at experienced Linux users: "More than 11 years after the release of CRUX 0.5 for i686, CRUX 3.0 is the first release for the x86-64 architecture. At the time Per Liden had created CRUX, the i686 processor on base of the 32-bit Intel IA-32 architecture was state-of-the-art and therefore chosen by him as the default optimization for CRUX. But nowadays the i686 architecture is more or less obsolete, at least for desktop machines, and superseded by the x86-64 architecture. Toolchain updates: CRUX 3.0 comes with a multilib toolchain which includes glibc 2.16.0, GCC 4.7.2 and Binutils 2.23.1. Kernel: Linux 3.6.11. CRUX 3.0 ships with X.Org 7.7 and X.Org Server 1.13.0." Distribution Release: CRUX 2.7.1 |
Matt Housh has announced the release of CRUX 2.7.1, an updated version of the project's lightweight and fast distribution designed for more advanced Linux users: "The CRUX team has released an interim release, version 2.7.1. 'Interim' means that this release is meant to facilitate upgrades or new installs by saving time that would be taken up by updating quite a few out-of-date packages. This also means that current users of CRUX 2.7 with updated packages do not need to upgrade or reinstall. Release notes: CRUX 2.7.1 includes glibc 2.12.2, GCC 4.5.3 and binutils 2.20.1; Linux kernel 2.6.39.4; packages - CRUX 2.7.1 includes the usual bunch of ports updates, but without any incompatible changes." Review: CRUX Linux |
OSNews has published a brief review of CRUX Linux, a light-weight Linux distribution for i686 processors: "There are no configuration tools in CRUX. Everything is handled by you and your favorite editor. As I wrote in the introduction, CRUX targets advanced users, yet I think it is a great solution for anyone who would like to learn more about Linux. I particularly appreciate the fact that ports comes with standard, default configuration files. No modification is applied to packages, and you get the applications as they are shipped by their developers. (think of a default Gnome/ KDE installation). A big, relevant exception is documentation: package guidelines for CRUX indicate to remove all documentation except man pages: HTML documentation, info pages, etc. are removed from the final package." Distribution Review: CRUX 0.9.2 |
Linuxdot: "Is CRUX right for you? First off it's been optimised for the i686, so for other architectures it won't work. Secondly CRUX makes no pretence, to cater for the newbie. So avoid unless you're an experienced user. And thirdly be aware that CRUX fully lives up to its claim of being lightweight. This means there's only WindowMaker and no office applications. So if you're stuck big-time on the likes of KDE or GNOME, then you'll likely want to try another distribution. Personally I think it's best, not to get too stuck on the one GUI, and play with as many as possible." The Linuxdot review team of CRUX 0.9.2 was impressed with CRUX stressing the importance of lightweight over bloat: "Last time I gave CRUX the thumbs-up. This time I give it the full thumbs-up. Per Liden, you have a winner." The full review by Linuxdot.

Distribution Review: CRUX 0.9.1 |
Linuxdot: "CRUX has plenty to make it stand out from the crowd. And that's how it should be. Variety is the spice of Linux, and everyone knows, 'The spice must flow.' Well done CRUX, you get the thumbs-up."" The full review is available on Linuxdot.org web site. The review sounded like a good excuse to add CRUX to the list of distributions tracked on these pages - you can visit it here for further information. A new version of CRUX (0.9.2) should be ready by the end of January. Some useful links: CRUX home page, installation instructions, FAQs, mailing lists and the FTP server with the current ISO images.
