Jay Klepacs has announced the release of aLinux 15.0, an independently developed distribution (formerly known ad Peanut Linux) designed for ageing computers and featuring the KDE 3.5.10 desktop: "aLinux 15.0 released, updates the graphical installer, dialogues, etc., easier to install. Same old system but with just enough updates to be 'usable'. KDE 3.5.10, X.Org 7.7, glibc 2.17, GCC 4.7.2, Linux kernel 2.6.34.14, Perl 5.16.2, Skype 4.1.0.20 (MSN and Windows Live support). Main web browser is Firefox 17.0.1. Distro is optimized for i686 now. Kopete has been removed and replaced with Pidgin messenger. It's still a distro aimed at computers from the past (mine included), so if you're looking for the latest bleeding edge, you won't find it here, but if you're looking for something a bit more complete from a past 'yesterday' operating system that still manages to work in 2013, this may suit you." Here is the brief release announcement. Download: aLive-15.0.iso (1,403MB, MD5). |

Reviews: First Look at aLinux 12.5 |
Mad Penguin has reviewed - and was left unimpressed with - the latest release of aLinux: "While I suppose this distribution has some potential, I'm sorry to say that I can't recommend it at this point in time. It appears that there was a ton of effort placed on making it look good but not enough effort placed on other things like performance and functionality. Am I saying it's a wasted effort? Certainly not. I think they've got the right idea. It's just not executed very well in my opinion. Eye candy is fine with some form of moderation. Loading a system with as many bells, whistles, and shiny round things that you can make for a pretty interface, but it can become an annoyance very quickly if you're intending on doing any actual work on the desktop." Distribution Release: aLinux 12.2 |
aLinux is a new name of what was until recently known as Peanut Linux. The originally small distribution has grown large and "Peanut isn't a Peanut no-more, it's evolved into something, well, larger, a watermelon... Of course it will be the same, just a different name." Version 12.2 is the first release under the new name: "Changes in aLinux 12.2 are mainly xitami rebuilt, mimes added to that, and mplayer-plug, 'apt' updated to name change. RPM updated to now show a vendor, this can be over ridden in /usr/lib/rpm/macros; as well as email address. Updated RPMs popt from 1.8.1 - 1.9.1 I believe. Some other stuff updated, can't remember it all... oh yeah, kdenetwork, updated to support wireless networking... umm... think brain think... lol... Kay and I may have added some other wallpapers...." Read the announcements in this forum thread. Download: alinux.iso (637MB).
