Vine Linux
Vine Linux is a supreme Linux distribution with integrated Japanese environment for desktop PCs and notebooks. Project Vine was founded by six members of the Project Japanese Extension (JPE) in 1998 and has been developing Vine Linux with help of many members and volunteers. Vine Seed, the development version of Vine Linux, is a public software repository, which all developers are welcome to join and contribute to. Out-of-the-box Kanji support is available throughout most applications and Japanese input support is provided by either the FreeWnn (or Wnn6 in the commercial "CR" edition) or the Canna input server.

The second beta of elementary OS 0.3, the upcoming new version of the project's Ubuntu-based distribution with a custom desktop environment called "Pantheon", is ready for download and testing: "You thought the day would never come, but after six months and almost 600 fixes we're bringing you the next step on our way to a final release of elementary OS 0.3. This beta brings huge changes like: better support for Samba in Files; new calculator and video applications; UI improvements in Calendar, Photos, System Settings, Slingshot; notifications and firewall settings; better and more discoverable multitasking; updated third-party applications, including Geary, Simple Scan, Document Viewer; updated development libraries, including GTK+ 3.14; security and stability improvements; UEFI/SecureBoot support; tons of stylesheet and icon changes and fixes...." elementary OS is an Ubuntu-based distribution which features the Pantheon desktop environment. The project has updated its 7.x series, code name "Horus", with a number of new features and improvements. One focus of the new 7.1 release is privacy: "Today, we're proud to announce that OS 7.1 is available to download now and shipping on several high-quality computers. This release represents the sum of our work over the last several months as a single major update to the OS 7 series and includes all of the monthly OS updates we've detailed since the OS 7 release. One of the most prevalent problems we face in our current digital lives is the violation of our privacy and the lack of consent when interacting with our devices each day. Portals seek to provide a safe and consensual way for apps to interact with the operating system and ensure that they only get access to the data and features that you want them to. One of the ways that apps may become intrusive is by automatically starting themselves or running in the background without your permission. In OS 7.1, we now provide the Background & Autostart Portal which alerts you when apps are running in the background and makes sure that apps ask your permission before they can automatically start up when you turn on your device." The elementary OS team have published a new version of their Ubuntu-based distribution. The new release, elementary OS 7.0 "Horus", intrduces a number of new changes, many of them focused on the software centre: "As always, AppCenter is the centerpiece of elementary OS. The primary purpose of any operating system is to support the apps that you use to work, play, and express yourself creatively. In the latest version of AppCenter we've worked on making app descriptions more engaging with more information, making it easier to update to the latest versions of apps, and improving support for sideloading and alt stores. We've also worked on improving AppCenter's responsiveness - making sure you can comfortably use it when tiling and on small displays as well as better using space on large displays. We've completely rewritten the way navigation works in AppCenter and now support two-finger swipe gestures to navigate back. The entire app loads much faster and provides more feedback when running background tasks via an overlay bar in the bottom right or left corner." The elementary team have announced the release of elementary OS 6.1 which carries the codename "Jolnir". The new release features the same base operating system as 6.0, though with a number of evolutionary improvements. Some of these changes affect the distribution's software centre: "AppCenter continues to fill out with apps from developers—and since the move to Flatpak, all apps that have been released for OS 6 will continue to be available on OS 6.1 and beyond. You can currently find over 90 curated apps in AppCenter, and developers have continued to push out rapid and frequent updates to their apps with new features and bug fixes, as they're in control of their own update schedule. Our shift from Debian packages to Flatpak for both curated and non-curated apps also means we’re able to lean more on Flatpak features, and we’ve been using this as an opportunity to make AppCenter much more engaging and informative right from the start - directly addressing feedback about the discoverability of the wide variety of apps in AppCenter." The project's latest release, elementary OS 6 "Odin", features sandboxed applications via Flatpak bundles, a new dark theme, and multi-touch gestures. "elementary OS 6 leverages cutting-edge sandboxing technology to enforce privacy and security protections at a technical level. In OS 6, all AppCenter apps are now packaged and distributed as Flatpaks, a modern container format that keeps apps siloed away from each other and your sensitive data. Several default elementary OS apps are now being distributed as Flatpaks as well. In addition, elementary OS 6 utilizes Portals to keep you in control of how apps interact with each other and your data. Apps must explicitly request permission in a well-defined way e.g. to get access to files or launch other apps. A new Permissions view in System Settings -> Applications exposes all the permissions apps have requested and gives you control to override or revoke them." The project has launched a new beta snapshot which previews features coming in elementary OS 6.0. The installer's appearance has been polished, work has gone into integrating Flatpak packages, and desktop notifications can now include action buttons for the user to respond with to the pop-up. "We've continued our efforts to ship first-party apps packaged as flatpaks in beta 2. elementary OS 6 now comes with Calculator, Camera, Document Viewer, Screenshot, Tasks and Web from the AppCenter Flatpak repository. As a user, it's entirely transparent - apps launch and behave just as before; they just happen to be packaged in a different way under the hood. As the beta process progresses and we solve sandboxing issues in our apps, we plan to transition even more apps over from Debian packages to flatpaks provided by the AppCenter Flatpak repository. We have also begun testing the third-party process for building Flatpak apps into AppCenter, as teased in the AppCenter Dashboard sprint blog post." There are many changes in the works, including an updated installer, dark theme, development tools, and additional support for Flatpak. "A major shift for elementary OS 6 is the inclusion of Flatpak apps out of the box, as well as an entirely Flatpak-based AppCenter ecosystem. We’ve created and are shipping a Flatpak platform and SDK that include all of the FreeDesktop, GNOME, and elementary libraries and technologies your apps will need to be built as a Flatpak - think of the platform as the elementary OS base in Flatpak form. We’ve updated the relevant developer docs to include information about packaging your app as a Flatpak. If you already have an app on AppCenter or are developing one for elementary OS 6, we highly encourage you to familiarize yourself with writing a Flatpak manifest and testing your app as a Flatpak, as all AppCenter apps in elementary OS 6 and beyond will be built as Flatpaks." Cassidy James Blaede has announced the release of elementary OS 5.1.4, the latest update from the project that develops a beginner-friendly Linux distribution with a custom desktop called Pantheon, based on Ubuntu. This version updates (and renames) the parental control application and revamps the application menu: "Informed by our work last year at the Metered Data and Parental Controls hackfest, we've started overhauling Parental Controls. While we're focusing on the digital wellbeing aspects, we decided to rename it to the more straightforward 'Screen Time & Limits'. But it's more than just a rename; Screen Time & Limits is now available for your own account in addition to other non-administrator accounts on the device—so you can set your own rules around screen time, Internet access and app usage. As a result of reworking the feature, Screen Time & Limits is also much more reliable than before. The elementary OS team has published a new minor release to the project's 5.1 "Hera" series. The project's new release, elementary OS 5.1.2, introduces newer hardware support via an updated kernel and includes a fix for a significant sudo bug. "A few months ago, we shared how our release process has evolved over time and the release of elementary OS 5.1 'Hera' marked the first time we built the stable ISO image for elementary OS via our new, completely open-source pipeline. With the new process, it has become much easier to tag and release incremental builds of the OS, and consequently today we’ve released a new spin of the 5.1 ISO.The new 5.1.2 ISO comes pre-built with all of the latest goodies from the January updates, as well as a few important hardware and security updates. These include the latest 18.04.3 hardware enablement (HWE) stack provided by Ubuntu, plus a security fix for sudo. Thanks to the HWE updates, elementary OS is now using the the 5.3 Linux kernel which also improves support for newer devices and peripherals - especially AMD Navi GPUs and 2015 MacBook keyboards and trackpads." "The newly redesigned login and lockscreen greeter looks sharper, works better, and fixes many reported issues with the previous greeter including focus issues, HiDPI issues, and better localization. The new design in Hera was in response to user feedback from Juno, and enables some nice new features. It now always shows usernames for all users, shows users' backgrounds as cards so you can more easily find users who maybe haven't set differentiating avatars, notifies when Caps or Num Lock are on, and makes 'Log In as Guest' more distinct when it's enabled. The new Onboarding app that ships with Hera introduces key features to users and handles common first-run tasks like managing privacy settings."
