NEW • Development Release: openSUSE 42.1 Milestone 1 |
Rate this project
Douglas DeMaio has announced the availability of a test release of the openSUSE distribution's new Leap product branch. The test release, called openSUSE Leap 42.1 Milestone 1, is in the early stages of its development and is intended for alpha testers and people curious as to what openSUSE has planned for the Leap series. Richard Brown, Chairman of the openSUSE Board, says Leap will provide a middle road between SUSE Linux Enterprise and openSUSE's rolling Tumbleweed branch. "As Tumbleweed keeps rolling with the latest features and subsystems, Leap will fill the gap between the longevity of a SLE core and the innovation related to Tumbleweed. The quality and environmental care Tumbleweed provides with its development model should quickly translate to a top-quality distribution for Linux users, sysadmins and developers. The milestone was moving forward with a 3 series Linux Kernel, but the Long-Term Support 4.1 Kernel, which enhances ext4 file-system encryption and power improvements for both ARM and x86 devices, was needed for the release of the first milestone. The new Kernel was practically flawless when added to the next build, which had some minor errors." More information on the test release is available in the project's release announcement. Distribution Release: openSUSE 15.6 |
The openSUSE project has published a new update to the distribution's Leap branch. openSUSE 15.6 Leap will be supported through to the end of 2025 and features a number of enhancements to remote administration tools and container management utilities: "The inclusion of the Cockpit package in openSUSE Leap 15.6 represents a significant enhancement in system and container management capabilities for users. This integration into Leap 15.6 improves usability and access as well as providing a link between advanced system administration and user-friendly operations from the web browser. The addition underscores openSUSE’s commitment to providing powerful tools that cater to both professionals and hobbyists. Leap does not come with a SELinux policy, so SELinux capabilities for Cockpit are not functioning. Container technologies receive a boost with Podman 4.8, which includes tailored support for Nextcloud through quadlets, alongside the latest releases of Distrobox, Docker, python-podman, Skopeo, containerd, libcontainers-common, ensuring a robust container management system. Virtualization technologies are also enhanced, featuring updates to Xen 4.18, KVM 8.2.2, libvirt 10.0, and virt-manager 4.1." Development Release: openSUSE 15.6 RC |
The openSUSE project has entered its release candidate phase for Leap version 15.6. The new release will include a number of new features, such as Cockpit for remote administration. "Users who are eager to install Leap 15.6 on their machines should check the release’s known issues to see if there is any issue that prevents the use of the RC. The release team was able to deliver a long time awaited Cockpit for both Leap and SUSE Package Hub users. Users might be familiar with Cockpit’s web-based admin interface from Leap Micro tutorials. Users are advised not to publicly expose Port 9090 used with the admin interface; just like people shouldn’t expose their router’s web interface to the public. Previous attempts to include Cockpit in Leap 15.5 were made, but there were several blockers. Inclusion was possible thanks to a refresh of the Python 3.11 stack, which was part of massive update effort for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 Service Pack 6 along with unification branding. The team was able to build Cockpit once and provide it for both SLES and Leap users with this RC." Additional details on the new Cockpit feature can be found in openSUSE's release announcement. Distribution Release: openSUSE 15.5 |
The openSUSE team has announced the release of openSUSE 15.5 Leap, a minor update to the project's 15.x series. The new version mostly offers small updates and security fixes for the 15.x branch of the distribution. "This release brings newer packages like Mesa and others, but Leap 15.5 is a non-feature release. Some of these newer packages to highlight include KDE Plasma 5.27, which is a Plasma Long Term Support version until the next one rolls out in 2024. Konqi lovers will enjoy a new welcome wizard, dynamic customization of desktop workspaces and more functionality with KRunner that includes a full desktop search, unit and currency exchange rate conversions, dictionary definitions, calculator features, and it shows graphical representations of mathematical functions. The Color Picker had a few improvements and added the possibility of displaying another preview color circle. KDE Gear 22.12.3 will be a new package in the release and complement the use of Plasma 5.27. The update fixes bugs with the Desktop Environment applications and highlights the enhancement of compression/decompression utility ark, improvements to text editor Kate and fixes some crashing of the video editor Kdenlive. Qt 5.15 LTS is available with the KDE Qt 5 patch collection." Additional information can be found in the distribution's release announcement. Development Release: openSUSE 15.5 Beta |
Douglas DeMaio has announced the availability of the beta release of openSUSE 15.5, a distribution also known as "Leap" and developed in parallel with SUSE Linux Enterprise (SLE). The release is available for the x86_64, aarch64, PowerPC and s390x architectures. "Leap 15.5 reaches beta phase. The version will offer some newer software versions, but the release is not a feature release. Packages like a newer Mesa and having the OpenH264 repository enabled by default for all new Leap 15.5 installations is planned. Another new element for Leap 15.5 is a migration option. A new single-click migration streamlines a migration process that took three steps in previous openSUSE Leap releases. The users that want to migrate from previous releases or 15.5 alpha can install openSUSE-repos-Leap, which comes with the repo definition and it utilizes zypp services for repo management, although this feature is not enabled by default. However, a zypper-migration-plugin implementation as the main request on the Graphical User Interface has been fulfilled into a separate element related to SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 Service Pack 5." Distribution Release: openSUSE 15.4 |
The openSUSE team has announced the launch of openSUSE 15.4 Leap, the latest version of their distribution which shares a package base with SUSE Linux Enterprise. One of the points of focus for the new version is easier access to media codecs and hardware drivers. "This version of Leap simplifies multimedia codec installation. Progress has been made to bring Cisco's openh264 video codecs to users via a repository present by default on the system, which will come in a maintenance update. The release not only gains muiltimedia improvements; it gains open-source driver support. Besides AMD's and Intel's continual open-source Linux graphics drivers commitment, users of modern NVIDIA GPUs will benefit from it signing firmware images for the latest-generation GeForce 30 series GPUs." Development Release: openSUSE 15.4 RC |
The openSUSE project has published a release candidate for openSUSE 15.4. The new development snapshot offers users a chance to test openSUSE and introduces a new platform for containers and minimal environments: "The openSUSE project has entered the release candidate phase for the next minor release version of the openSUSE Leap distribution. The upcoming release of Leap 15.4 transitioned from its beta phase to'release candidate phase after Build 230.2 passed openQA quality assurance testing. 'Test results look pretty solid as you’d expect from RC,' wrote release manager Lubos Kocman in an email on the openSUSE Factory mailing list yesterday. 'My original ETA was Wednesday, but we managed to get (the) build finished and tested sooner.' The new phase also changes the new offering of Leap Micro, which is a modern lightweight operating system ideal for host-container and virtualized workloads, into its release candidate phase. The RC signals the package freeze for software that will make it into the distribution, which is used on servers, workstations, desktops and for virtualization and container use."
