Distribution Release: Tanglu 4.0 |
Matthias Klumpp has announced the release of Tanglu 4.0 which carries the code name "Dasyatis". The Debian-based distribution was in development for longer than expected which Klumpp addresses in the release announcement: "Tanglu 4 comes - due to being frozen for far too long - without the latest and greatest packages, but still with some notable changes. The KDE Plasma version is at 5.8, while the GNOME desktop is available in version 3.20 with some pieces from GNOME 3.22. The KDE Plasma design was updated with some suggestions from KDE designers at Akademy last year. Tanglu is a fully usrmerged system by default now, with no option to switch back to split-/usr or opt-in option (like in previous releases). Additionally, we support installing on UEFI systems without legacy mode now, which was a much requested feature and took quite a while to make it work reliably with the Calamares installer. We do not, however, support secure boot on EFI systems yet." Tanglu 4.0 is available in three editions: Core, KDE and GNOME. Download (SHA256, pkglist)): tanglu-dasyatis-kde-live-amd64.hybrid.iso (1,356MB), tanglu-dasyatis-gnome-live-amd64.hybrid.iso (1,289MB), tanglu-dasyatis-core-live-amd64.hybrid.iso (462MB). |

Development Release: Tanglu 4.0 Beta 1 |
Matthias Klumpp has announced the availability of the first beta release of Tanglu 4.0, an upcoming new version of the project's Debian-based distribution with a choice of GNOME or KDE Plasma desktops: "We are pleased to announce the release of the second development version of Tanglu 4, which includes the KDE, GNOME and Core flavors. This beta release contains many changes - most notably, imports from Debian are frozen now and we ship with our final versions of KDE and GNOME. It also contains the following highlights: systemd 229, Linux kernel 4.6, KDE Plasma 5.6, GNOME 3.20. We are planning to update MESA to 12.0 and also update the kernel prior to doing the final release of Tanglu 4. When testing Tanglu 4 beta, please keep in mind that it is a development snapshot release and it still contains rough edges. As always, we ship with fewer packages than Debian due to reduced manpower and transitions that have been done." Read the full release announcement for further information. The new release of Tanglu ships with a new graphical system installer, the Apper package manager front-end has been replaced with Muon Discover and the KDE edition of Tanglu now ships with the Plasma 5 desktop environment. "Tanglu 3 comes with fresh new packages, a Linux 4.0 kernel, systemd 224, KDE Plasma 5.3 and the latest GNOME release, GNOME 3.16. On the installer side, the previous live-installer has been replaced with Calamares, which is now available as additional option to the Debian-Installer installation method. The KDE Plasma flavor of Tanglu now comes with Plasma 5, and replaces the Apper package manager with Muon Discover, for installing new software (Apper will come back in future, when it is fully ported). Distribution Release: Tanglu 2.0 |
Matthias Klumpp announced the release of Tanglu 2.0, a desktop Linux distribution with a choice of KDE or GNOME, based on Debian's "Testing" branch: "We are glad to announce the availability of the second release of Tanglu, code name 'Bartholomea'. This release contains a large amount of updated packages, and ships with the latest release of KDE 4 and GNOME. Tanglu 2 ships with two options to install it: Debian Installer (d-i) and our own live-installer. We recommend to use Debian Installer ('Install Tanglu' option on the live CD boot menu), because a lot of testing went into it and it does a much better job compared to the live installer, which will be replaced with Tanglu 3. The KDE flavor of Tanglu received bug-fix updates for the Plasma workspaces and contains new versions of the KDE applications." See the release announcement and release notes for more details. Download (SHA256, pkglist): tanglu-2.0-kde-live-amd64.hybrid.iso (1,367MB), tanglu-2.0-gnome-live-amd64.hybrid.iso (1,284MB). |

Compared to the previous beta release, RC1 contains various bug fixes, most notably for bug #68 (no network-manager in GNOME flavour), #84 (fsck failure on first boot after installation with live-installer) and #99 (race between plymouth-quit and GDM). We also updated a few more packages to work better with systemd and fixed a Plymouth crash, as well as the Plymouth boot screen not being shown in case proprietary drivers are used.
