The AV Linux distribution is a Debian-based project which features many applications to assist the user in working with audio and video formats. The project has released a new version, AV Linux 2016.8.30, with a long list of changes: "Fixed UID/GID issue and restored live and installed UID/GID to '1000'. Updated to 4.4.6-RT kernel with fixed 32-bit app support and VBox module building support. Enabled running shell scripts by clicking in Thunar to ease installing Ardour and Mixbus bundles. Fixed WinFF presets for aac encoding. Added some module configurationss for AMD video cards and modesetting. Complete new Zukitre-based theme necessitated by GTK+ 3.20, changing its API and breaking older GTK+ 3 themes. Complete new Hooli theme for AVL 32-bit. Complete removal of Kdenlive and KDE 5 runtime components, Kdenlive is simply not in a good place right now to feature on a live ISO image. Removed Openshot for the same reason as Kdenlive, it has great potential but just isn't there yet.. Complete removal of LibreOffice." Distribution Release: AV Linux MXE-23.2 |
Glen MacArthur has announced the release of AV Linux MXE-23.2, a bug-fix update of the project's earlier release. AVLinux is based on Debian 12 and MX Linux, it is designed primarily for content creators, and it uses Enlightenment as the default desktop user interface. "This is an ISO image update to AV Linux MX edition that addresses a few annoying and potentially show-stopping bugs that appeared in the first release of AVL-MXe 23.1. Obviously the jump to a new Debian platform ('Bookworm'), a completely new desktop environment (Enlightenment) and a whole new way of handling system audio(PipeWire) was bound to scare a few new bugs out of the woodwork and boy did it ever. Hopefully this ISO will help people get off to a better start with these various new features. Don't fade backlight is now set by default which should fix Enlightenment setting the backlight to 0 which was making the lightDM login screen invisible after installing AVL-MXe to hard disk and booting it with its default of SysVInit (systemd boot recommended). A shortcut to change the keyboard layout for Enlightenment to use is now easily found on the main panel." Read the rest of the release announcement for further information and screenshots. Distribution Release: AV Linux MXE-23.1 |
Glen MacArthur has announced the release of AV Linux MXE-23.1, a major upgrade of the project's Debian and MX Linux-based multimedia distribution. The new version upgrades the underlying system to Debian 12 base and introduces Enlightenment as the default desktop user interface: "After many months of behind-the-scenes development and a series of new features and changes, AV Linux MX Edition (aka AVL-MXe) 23.1 'Enlightened' has been released. This release moves platforms from MX-21/Debian 11 'Bullseye' to MX-23/Debian 12 'Bookworm'. With the new platform comes a major move to the Enlightenment desktop environment (0.25.4) and a completely new audio system (PipeWire 1.0.0). Because of the sheer amount and depth of the changes, there is no repository upgrade path from AV Linux 21.3 and this new version will require a fresh install. The ISO image has grown to 5.2 GB since the last release. System highlights: MX-23/Debian 12 'Bookworm' base; Liquorix 6.6.9 Linux kernel; Enlightenment 0.25.4 desktop environment; PipeWire 1.0.0; choice of systemd or SysVInit (once installed); MX Tools and AV Linux utilities." Distribution Release: AV Linux MX-21.2.1 |
Glen MacArthur has announced the release of AV Linux MX-21.2.1, the latest version of the project's Debian and MX Linux-based distribution for "content creators". Some of the changes in this version include: "The Openbox window manager is gone, replaced by native xfwm; Nitrogen is gone replaced by native xfdesktop; SLiM login manager is gone replaced by lightDM; the LXDE-based ISO build of MXDE is gone, the classic GTK+2 LXDE/Openbox is fading into oblivion; all 32-bit ISO builds are gone, I simply don't have the time for a use-case that has dwindled down to almost nothing; AVL-MXE Assistant has been broken into unbranded component utilities to be shared by AVL-MXE and MXDE-EFL; Liquorix kernel 6.0; full Xfce desktop with Compton compositing; Jeremy Jongepier's graphical RTCQS utility; added Auburn Sounds Lens plugin (free version); added Socalabs plugins; added Blender from blender.org at version 3.4.0...." A separate release, MXDE-EFL 21.2.2 (featuring an Enlightenment-based desktop), is also available. |

Distribution Release: AV Linux MX-21 |
AV Linux is a versatile, Debian-based distribution featuring a large collection of audio and video production software. The project's latest release is based on MX Linux 21. "AV Linux MX-21, code-named 'Consciousness', has been released, based on MX-21 'Wildflower' and Debian 11 'Bullseye'. This new version has been completely built from the ground up, it is the first version to not be a re-spin of an existing system, and it was built with same tools that are used to build MX Linux and antiX. Because it has moved to a whole new Debian platform (from 'Buster' to 'Bullseye'), there is no upgrade path from previous versions of AV Linux and you will need to install from the ISO image. Please note that the initial releases of AV Linux MX edition are still receiving updates through the MX repositories so if you are happy where you are, there is certainly no hurry to upgrade. The work on this release has brought AV Linux much closer to MX in many ways and it is hoped that both projects will benefit from serving more users across more niches." This release also drops the legacy 32-bit build. Further details may be found in the release announcement. Download: AV_Linux_MX-21_Edition-21_ahs_x64.iso (3,395MB, SHA256, signature, pkglist). |

Glen MacArthur has announced the release of AV Linux 2021.05.22, an updated build of the project's MX Linux-based distribution optimised for audio and video production and available for x86_64 and i386 architectures: "What began as a bug-fix and maintenance release has snowballed into a quasi new-features release, especially in the case of the 64-bit edition, with a move to Openbox and SLiM in an effort to put Xfce on Keto. Changelog: changed window manager to Openbox; removed xfwm and xfdesktop; changed wallpaper application to Nitrogen; changed login manager to SliM; created and added some background helper scripts for Openbox; corrected Liquorix repository for 'Buster'; removed now obsolete libfaudio OBS repository; updated and enhanced User Manual significantly; updates and improvements to the AVL-MXE Assistant to make it take up less screen space; tweaks to Default Diehard theme, AVL-MXE logo and new DH wallpapers; move to a more traditional panel and taskbar from the previous dock setup; added some new audio plugins - Drops, MZuther...." Distribution Release: AV Linux 2020.11.23 |
Glen MacArthur has announced the release of AV Linux 2020.11.23, the latest version of the multimedia-oriented distribution with a collection of audio and video production software. This is the project's first build based on MX Linux and it also features separate editions for x86_64 (with Xfce) and i386 (with Openbox) platforms: "After several months of behind-the-scenes work, two ISO images of the brand new 'AV Linux MX Edition' have been released. With 32-bit Xfce/Openbox and 64-bit Xfce editions, this new project is based on MX Linux 19.3. The MX development team is aware of this project and have kindly provided assistance and a warm welcome but it is important to note that this project is an unofficial respin and at the current time not under the umbrella of the antiX/MX projects. MX is the new home base of AV Linux and I'm very excited about combining the phenomenal tools and utilities of MX with the well-known content-creation focus that has defined AV Linux since 2008. Highlights of this release: Linux kernel 5.9.1, includes the Bluetooth stack security fix; greatly expanded AVL-MXE Assistant; new custom 'Diehard' and 'Earth' themes...." Distribution Release: AV Linux 2020.4.10 |
Glen MacArthur has announced the release of a brand-new version of AV Linux, a Debian-based, multimedia-oriented distribution with a collection of audio and video production software. AV Linux 2020.4.10 is the project's first release based on Debian 10: "AV Linux 2020.4.10 is released. What's new? Moved to Debian 10 'Buster'; new Linux 5.4.28 realtime and lowlatency kernels; new Systemback fork with NVMe support; added Pulseaudio Bluetooth module and BT support frontends; disabled automounting of external drives on live ISO image (it can be re-enabled post-install) - some users viewed automount as a security intrusion; removed all KDE libraries and Kdenlive - too much bulk and ISO image space for one application, it can easily be installed from Debian or Flatpak post-install; added latest KXStudio repositories compliant with Debian 'Buster'; added new Thunar custom actions, including sample editing and image manipulation; completely rewritten 'AV Linux Assistant' with many new features; consolidation of many small AV Linux scripts and apps into AV Linux Assistant; consolidation of extra plugins into a single 'avlinux-extra-plugins' package...." Distribution Release: AV Linux 2019.4.10 |
AV Linux is a versatile, Debian-based distribution featuring a large collection of audio and video production software. The distribution's latest update is AV Linux 2019.4.10 which introduces a number of fixes and represents the project's last version to run on 32-bit hardware. "This release is basically an update of the ISO that fixes a couple of annoying bugs from the 2018.6.25 release with some notable updates and additions. It will mark the last release based on Debian Stretch and sadly it will also be the last release of the 32-bit version. Future AVL development will focus on Debian 'Buster' and 64-bit only. In the meantime I think this 2019.4.10 version will provide a fast, stable well prepared platform for AV Content creation for quite some time. Changelog: Refreshed expired repository keys for WineHQ and Spotify. Updated and fixed repositories for new Cinelerra-GG site. Updated and synced all Debian and third-party repos (including KXStudio). Fixed VirtualBox Guest Additions removal script to allow /etc/rc.local to remain executable and enable automount of external drives. Fixed missing 'linvstconverttree' in LinVST. Removed some obsoleted udev rules." Further details can be found in the project's release announcement. Download: isotester-avl64-2019.4.10.iso (3,662MB, SHA256, pkglist). |

Distribution Release: AV Linux 2018.6.25 |
Glen MacArthur has announced the release of AV Linux 2018.6.25, an updated build of the project's Debian-based distribution featuring a "real-time kernel" (with the PREEMPT_RT patch) and a large collection of audio and video applications. This version brings un updated 4.16 Linux kernel and improved support for newer AMD video cards: "AV Linux 2018.6.25 has been released. The April AV Linux 2018.4.12 release had a lot of improvements and updates with regards to the audio and video applications, but some improvements needed to be made for systems with UEFI booting and systems with recent AMD video display adapters not covered by SGFXI. I personally have no UEFI (or AMD) computers to test with, so I could only use VirtualBox for UEFI testing. Thanks to bug reports from a few users and several fixes provided by a forum member, I think many of the issues for actual hardware UEFI machines have now been addressed. If you have already successfully installed and updated AV Linux 2018.4.12 then you will not really need to be concerned with the updated June ISO images."
