BLAG Linux And GNU
BLAG was a Linux distribution based on Fedora and reduced to one CD. It includes useful applications missing from Fedora, as well as a suite of graphics, Internet, audio, video, office, and peer-to-peer file sharing applications. BLAG was up-to-date with all Fedora errata fixes at time of release and uses Synaptic for easy upgrades. The name stands for Brixton Linux Action Group, which works to overthrow corporate control of information and technology through community action and to spread Free Software.

Lubuntu 16.10 has been released. Lubuntu is a variant of Ubuntu with the lightweight LXDE as the preferred desktop. From the release announcement: "Thanks to all the hard work from our contributors, Lubuntu 16.10 has been released. With the code name Yakkety Yak, Lubuntu 16.10 is the 11th release of Lubuntu, with support until July 2017. We even have Lenny, the Lubuntu mascot, dressed up for the occasion. Lubuntu is an official Ubuntu flavor based on the Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment (LXDE) specifically targeting older machines with lower resources, but it also runs great on newer hardware. What's improved since 16.04? We now ship with Linux kernel 4.8; general bug fix release as we prepare to switch to LXQt; LXDE components have been updated with bug fixes; the artwork has received an update. Unfortunately, we could not get LXQt ready in time for 16.10, so Lubuntu 16.10 ships with LXDE." See also the release notes for further details. Distribution Release: Lubuntu 24.10 |
The Lubuntu team has published a release announcement for Lubuntu 24.10, an interim release which will receive nine months of support. "Lubuntu 24.10 is the first release of Lubuntu to ship with a primarily Qt 6-based environment. Previous LXQt releases used Qt 5. Due to this upgrade, modern Qt 6-based apps such as the latest versions of VirtualBox, qBitTorrent, and more will now be themed similar to the rest of the desktop. Qt 5 app theming also still works, allowing you to continue to use apps that haven't caught up with Qt 6 yet. Lubuntu-specific applications (namely Lubuntu Update and the Lubuntu Installer Prompt) have also been updated to use Qt 6. The Calamares installer continues to use Qt 5 however. We expect to switch Calamares to using Qt 6 for Lubuntu 25.04. For a while now, Lubuntu has been using the Breeze theme from KDE Plasma. While this has worked well enough for a while, it has had some incompatibilities with LXQt crop up before, and this cycle it happened again. Rather than continuing to make a KDE component work where it wasn't really designed to, Lubuntu 24.10 now ships with Kvantum theming." Though there were plans to enable Wayland by default in this release, the project experienced too many issues with the Wayland session and have decided to used X11 by default until Lubuntu 25.04. Distribution Release: Lubuntu 24.04 |
Lubuntu is an Ubuntu-based distribution which features the LXQt desktop environment. The project's latest release re-introduces an OEM install option, features a new installer prompt, and provides three install modes: Full, Normal, and Minimal. Minimal provides just a desktop environment with bare essentials, no web browser, and no Snap software. "Traditionally, installing Lubuntu only provides a regular installation mode (a single option for installs). This changes with Lubuntu 24.04, where you can now pick between Normal, Full, and Minimal. A Normal installation gives you a traditional Lubuntu experience. The Minimal mode ships with just the desktop environment and essential components (no web browser or snapd). A Full installation is the same as Normal, but comes with several recommended third-party apps: Virtual Machine Manager, Element, Thunderbird, Krita. In addition, you can choose to download and install updates during the installation procedure rather than having to install them afterwards. This can help speed up the installation process and get you up-and-running quicker." Additional details can be found in the project's release announcement. Distribution Release: Lubuntu 23.10 |
Lubuntu is a community edition of Ubuntu which features the LXQt desktop environment. The project's latest release, Lubuntu 23.10, uses the Calamares system installer while other branches of the Ubuntu family typically use Ubiquity. "We are once again utilizing Calamares 3.3 Alpha 2 in Lubuntu 23.10, as it has proven to be highly reliable since its initial use in Lubuntu 22.10. During testing, we did note that if you attempt to create an encrypted installation without a passphrase, Lubuntu will be installed unencrypted. This is unlikely to be a problem for most users as disk encryption requires a passphrase for it to be effective. More information can be found here. We have a new wallpaper (which is also used as at the login screen), created one of our Lubuntu Members; Walter Lapchynski, with a bit of assistance from Ubuntu Studio's Erich Eickmeyer. Thanks to both Walter and Erich. Please also check the Ubuntu Release Notes for more common issues and bugs affecting all Ubuntu flavors." The release announcement offers additional details. Distribution Release: Lubuntu 23.04 |
The Lubuntu team have announced the launch of Lubuntu 23.04, an interm release which will receive nine months of updates. Several of the changes in version 23.04 include the visual look and effects offered by the LXQt desktop: "Lubuntu previously used the PulseAudio audio system to provide rich audio functionality to our users. However, recently Ubuntu and its flavors have been gradually shifting to using the PipeWire audio server in place of PulseAudio. PipeWire offers several advantages over PulseAudio, including improved Bluetooth support, and more powerful management features for complex audio-related workloads. In order to offer these improved features to our users, Lubuntu has replaced the PulseAudio audio system with PipeWire in Lubuntu 23.04. Since Lubuntu 20.04, the default screensaver has been 'Flurry'. Due to reports of screensaver glitches on certain hardware, we have switched the default screensaver in Lubuntu to GL Matrix. This screensaver features a 3D “digital rain” effect that we have found to be aesthetically pleasing." Additional information is provided in the project's release announcement and in the release notes. Download: lubuntu-23.04-desktop-amd64.iso (2,956MB, SHA256, signature, torrent, pkglist). |

Distribution Release: Lubuntu 22.10 |
Simon Quigley has announced the release of Lubuntu 22.10, the latest version of the project's official Ubuntu flavour with LXQt as the preferred desktop environment: "Thanks to all the hard work from our contributors, Lubuntu 22.10 has been released. With the code name 'Kinetic Kudu', Lubuntu 22.10 is the 23rd release of Lubuntu and the ninth release of Lubuntu with LXQt as the default desktop environment. Known issues and notable changes: a bug in LXQt results in duplicate menu entries for the Calamares installer; Lubuntu uses the Calamares system installer in place of the Ubiquity installer that most other flavors use; while we are ensuring 22.04 LTS' Calamares follows the upstream LTS cycle, we decided to get ahead of the curve by shipping Calamares 3.3 Alpha 2 in 22.10; an ongoing concern within the Ubuntu and Lubuntu communities has been the increased startup times for the Firefox web browser due to using the Snap package format instead of the traditional Debian-based package format used for the rest of the system...." Distribution Release: Lubuntu 22.04 |
Lubuntu is a community flavour of Ubuntu which features the LXQt desktop environment. The project's latest release, Lubuntu 22.04, is supported for three years and ships with LXQt 0.17.0. "You can find the following major applications and toolkits installed by default in this release: LXQt 0.17.0 – more information here.Qt 5.15.3. Mozilla Firefox will be shipped as a Snap package with version 98.0.2 and will receive updates throughout the support cycle of the release. The LibreOffice 7.3.2 suite. VLC 3.0.16, for viewing media and listening to music. Featherpad 1.0.1, for notes and code editing. Discover Software Center 5.24.4, for an easy, graphical way to install and update software. You can find a variety of other applications installed which aim to enhance your experience while staying out of the way of your normal workflow. Please note: The change of firefox to snap package, results in the browser being slower to start. It does not impact execution or subsequent runs during that session. The reason for this is the setting up of the confined environment in which snaps run, and decompress Squashfs, with privacy and security benefits. This is very noticeable on first run especially with live media." Additional information is provided in the project's release announcement.
