Ubuntu Kylin, a distribution designed primarily for the Chinese-speaking market, has been updated to version 16.10: "We are glad to announce the release of Ubuntu Kylin 16.10, code name 'Yakkety Yak'. In this release, we have fixed many internationalization and localization bugs in Ubuntu itself and bugs in software written by the Ubuntu Kylin team. Changes since 16.04: this release is based on 4.8 Linux kernel; the core applications have been updated to their latest versions - Firefox 49, Thunderbird 45.3, LibreOffice 5.2, Chromium 53, Nautilus (aka Files) 3.20; we have also released Sogou Pinyin 2.0.0.0082, it is not included in the image by default, but you can install it easily from the Ubuntu Kylin Software Center. Besides a plethora of bugs fixed in this milestone, several Ubuntu Kylin specific packages have also been updated." |
| Ubuntu Kylin is an official Ubuntu flavour whose primary goal is to create a variant of Ubuntu optimised for Chinese users (using the Simplified Chinese writing system), although it also supports other languages. The default desktop is called UKUI (Universal Kylin User Interface) which is based on MATE desktop and is developed with the Qt toolkit. UKUI strives to adhere to the friendly-and-simple design concept. The distribution also includes more than 20 applications developed in-house, including Kylin Assistant, Kylin Video, Kylin Screenshots and Software Center.

The Ubuntu Kylin project has announced the release of version 26.04 of its community edition of Ubuntu which is configured for Chinese-speaking users. An English version of the release announcement states: "On April 23, 2026, the Kylin Team officially released Ubuntu Kylin 26.04, which will be supported for 3 years. Based on the Linux 7.0 kernel, Ubuntu Kylin 26.04 brings major upgrades to core libraries, subsystems, and essential software, improving overall stability and compatibility. The desktop environment has also been upgraded to UKUI 4.20, delivering a smoother and more reliable user experience! New features: Ubuntu Kylin 26.04 includes Linux kernel 7.0 with a series of enhancements: Rust language support is no longer marked as experimental; improved support for Intel Core Ultra Series 3 (Panther Lake) processors; optimized support for Intel Xe3 integrated graphics and integrated NPU; cgroupfs now mounts with nsdelegate, memory_recursiveprot, and memory_hugetlb_accounting enabled; integrated the IgH EtherCAT Master module and Generic driver; the real-time Linux kernel is now available in the main archive for all users; Kernel Livepatch now supports the ARM64 architecture; ZFS has been updated to 2.4.1." Package management: APT has been updated to 3.0. A new dependency solver is automatically used when the classic solver cannot find a solution. It may also be triggered to provide more context in failure cases or to evaluate performance. UKUI desktop environment: Ubuntu Kylin 25.04 features the UKUI desktop environment, designed for visual elegance and ease of use. It provides a wide range of personalized settings, enabling users to build desktop layouts that match their preferences - making daily work more efficient and comfortable."
