Network Security Toolkit
Network Security Toolkit (NST) is a bootable live CD based on the Fedora distribution. The toolkit was designed to provide easy access to best-of-breed open source network security applications and should run on most x86 platforms. The main intent of developing this toolkit was to provide the network security administrator with a comprehensive set of open source network security tools. What we find rather fascinating with NST is that we can transform most x86 systems (Pentium II and above) into a system designed for network traffic analysis, intrusion detection, network packet generation, wireless network monitoring, a virtual system service server, or a sophisticated network/host scanner.

The Amnesic Incognito Live System (Tails) is a Debian-based distribution which is designed for anonymous web browsing and communication over the Internet. The Tails project has announced the availability of Tails 2.11. The new version features a number of bug fixes, including a fix for local root privilege escalation and the Tor Browser has been updated to version 6.5.1. The project has also reported the alternative anonymizing network utility I2P will be dropped in future versions of the distribution: "We are very sad to announce that Tails 2.11 will be the last version to include I2P, an alternative anonymizing network. Maintaining software like I2P well-integrated in Tails takes time and effort and our team is too busy with other priorities. Unfortunately, we failed to find a developer outside of our team to maintain I2P in Tails. As a consequence, the last version of I2P being shipped in Tails is 0.9.25, which is nearly one year old now at this moment. But we will be happy to reintroduce I2P if we find a volunteer to take care of maintaining it in Tails." Further information on Tails 2.11 can be found in the project's release announcement. Distribution Release: Tails 3.12 |
The Amnesic Incognito Live System (Tails) is a Debian-based live DVD/USB with the goal of providing complete Internet anonymity for the user. The project's latest release is Tails 3.12 which introduces a new install method: "The biggest news for 3.12 is that we completely changed the installation methods for Tails. In short, instead of downloading an ISO image (a format originally designed for CDs), you now download Tails as a USB image: an image of the data as it needs to be written to the USB stick. ISO files are still available for people using optical media and virtual machines. The distribution includes some additional changes: "Starting Tails should be a bit faster on most machines. Tell users to use sudo when they try to use su on the command line. Update Linux to 4.19. Update Intel and AMD microcodes and most firmware packages. This should improve the support for newer hardware (graphics, Wi-Fi, etc.). Remove Liferea, as announced in Tails 3.9. Update Tor Browser to 8.0.5. Update Thunderbird to 60.4.0." Further details can be found in the project's release announcement. Download (pkglist): tails-amd64-3.12.iso (1,176MB, signature, torrent), tails-amd64-3.12.img (1,186MB, signature, torrent). |

Distribution Release: Tails 3.10.1 |
A new version of Tails has been released. Tails is a Debian-based live distribution whose goal is to help its users to browse the Internet anonymously and to circumvent censorship. This version is a standard security and bug-fix update: "Tails 3.10.1 is out. This release fixes many security vulnerabilities. You should upgrade as soon as possible. Upgrades and changes: hide the PIM option when unlocking VeraCrypt volumes because PIM won't be supported until Tails 4.0; rename the buttons in the confirmation dialog of Tails Installer to Install (or Upgrade) and Cancel to be less confusing; update Linux to 4.8, Tor Browser to 8.0.3, Thunderbird to 60.2.1. Fixed problems: prevent Tor Browser from leaking the language of the session; prevent Additional Software from asking to persist packages which are already configured as additional software; prevent Tails Installer from crashing when issuing an error message with international characters (non-ASCII); fix the VeraCrypt support for multiple encryption (cascades of ciphers); harden the configuration of sudo to prevent privilege escalation." Distribution Release: Tails 3.9 |
The Amnesic Incognito Live System (Tails) is a Debian-based live distribution with the goal of providing complete Internet anonymity for the user. The project's latest version, Tails 3.9, makes it easier to install additional software when the distribution boots. The new version also supports working with VeraCrypt encrypted storage volumes, along with reading news feeds in Thunderbird. "You can now install additional software automatically when starting Tails. When installing an additional Debian package from Tails, you can decide to install it automatically every time. To check your list of additional software packages, choose Applications->System Tool->Additional Software. The packages included in Tails are carefully tested for security. Installing additional packages might break the security built in Tails, so be careful with what you install. To unlock VeraCrypt volume in Tails, choose Applications->System Tool->Unlock VeraCrypt Volumes. The integration of VeraCrypt in the Files and Disks utilities was done upstream in GNOME and will be available outside of Tails in Debian 10 (Buster) and Ubuntu 18.10 (Cosmic Cuttlefish)." Fixed problems: fix importing OpenPGP keys from email attachments; fix the translations of the homepage of the Unsafe Browser. For more details, read our changelog. Known issues: none specific to this release. To upgrade, automatic upgrades are available from 3.6, 3.6.1, 3.6.2, 3.7, and 3.7.1. What's coming up? Tails 3.9 is scheduled for September 5." If you set up an administration password when starting Tails, you can unlock your screen with your administration password. Otherwise, you can set up a password to unlock your screen when locking your screen for the first time. We improved a lot the backend of the Additional Software persistence feature. Your additional software is now: Installed in the background after the session starts instead of blocking the opening of the desktop. Always installed even if you are off-line.
