The Linux Mint team has announced the availability of a new development snapshot for Linux Mint. The new testing snapshot, Linux Mint 18.3 Beta, features several overhauled applications. The software manager and backup utilities in particular have been given a new look. Linux Mint now makes it easier to install third-party software, such as Google Earth and Steam, and Flatpak packages can be installed through the software manager. The new beta also features operating system snapshots using Timeshift. "Linux Mint 18.3 features Timeshift, a tool dedicated to system snapshots. Timeshift is the perfect companion to the Linux Mint Backup Tool. It doesn't save your personal data, it saves everything else. Thanks to Timeshift you can create backups of the operating system itself. You deleted system files by mistake? You can recover them. You upgraded to a newer release and something isn't working well anymore? You can go back in time." | Linux Mint is an Ubuntu-based distribution whose goal is to provide a classic desktop experience with many convenient, custom tools and optional out-of-the-box multimedia support. It also adds a custom desktop and menus, several unique configuration tools, and a web-based package installation interface. Linux Mint is compatible with Ubuntu software repositories. Besides its Ubuntu-based flavour, the project also produces a separate "Debian" edition (called LMDE), based on the latest stable Debian version.

Distribution Release: Linux Mint 22 |

The Linux Mint team have announced the launch of Linux Mint 22. The new version will be supported through to 2029 and focused primarily on updating language and hardware support: "Linux Mint 22 ships with modern components and the new Ubuntu 24.04 package base. To guarantee better compatibility with modern hardware, the kernel is version 6.8 and Linux Mint 22.x point releases will follow the HWE series. The default sound server switched to PipeWire. The Software Sources received support for the new Debian DEB822 format. Themes were updated to support GTK4. JXL support was added to Pix and a new thumbnailer was implemented for it. All software using libsoup2 was migrated to libsoup3. HiDPI support improvements were made in the boot sequence, in Plymouth and Slick-Greeter. An updated package base doesn't just bring new technology, it can sometimes also threaten existing features. Thunderbird continues to be available in Linux Mint 22 as a native .deb package. Following the decision by Ubuntu to move it to Snap, Linux Mint is now responsible for packaging it. With GNOME 46, libgoa/libgoa-backend 3.50 moved to GTK4 and could no longer be used by GTK3 applications. This meant that Online Accounts support had to disappear from Cinnamon, Budgie and Unity. The XApp project implemented a standalone application called 'GNOME Online Accounts GTK'. Not only did this bring the feature back in these three desktop environments, it also made it possible for it to be used in MATE and Xfce." Development Release: Linux Mint 22 Beta |

The Linux Mint project has published a new beta release for the upcoming launch of Linux Mint 22. The beta snapshot includes several adjustments and a few new programs, including some which replace discontinued GNOME features or support. "An updated package base doesn't just bring new technology, it can sometimes also threaten existing features. Thunderbird continues to be available in Linux Mint 22 as a native .deb package. Following the decision by Ubuntu to move it to Snap, Linux Mint is now responsible for packaging it. With GNOME 46, libgoa/libgoa-backend 3.50 moved to GTK4 and could no longer be used by GTK3 applications. This meant that Online Accounts support had to disappear from Cinnamon, Budgie and Unity. The XApp project implemented a standalone application called ;GNOME Online Accounts GTK'. Not only did this bring the feature back in these three desktop environments, it also made it possible for it to be used in MATE and Xfce. In Ubuntu 24.04, a number of GNOME applications moved to libAdwaita and stopped supporting the system theme. Distribution Release: Linux Mint 21.3 |

The Linux Mint team have published a new version of their Ubuntu-based distribution: Linux Mint 21.3. The new point release includes several new features, including a new type of Cinnamon add-on (or "spice") which adds actions to the file manager. This release also includes support for Secure Boot and introduces experimental support for Wayland sessions in Cinnamon. "Cinnamon add-ons are called 'spices'. Until now Cinnamon supported 4 types of spices: Applets: Little programs which can be placed in your panel(s); Desklets: Same thing, but on your desktop; Extensions: Scripts which can alter the way Cinnamon works; Themes: Look and feel for your Cinnamon desktop. Cinnamon 6.0 features a new type of spices: Actions. Actions, formerly known as 'Nemo actions', are add-ons for your file manager's context menu. Right-click an .iso file and look at the context menu. The 'Make bootable USB stick' and 'Verify' menu items are Nemo actions, provided by the mintstick package. In Cinnamon 6.0, actions are now a type of spice. You can download, enable and rate them like any other spices: applets, desklets, extensions and Cinnamon themes." The Linux Mint team have announced the release of a new development snapshot, Linux Mint 21.3 Beta. The new beta release introduces some changes to the way the distribution boots, in particular offering support for Secure Boot. "Linux Mint 21.3 is a long term support release which will be supported until 2027. It comes with updated software and brings refinements and many new features to make your desktop experience more comfortable. Linux Mint 21.3 comes with full support for SecureBoot and compatibility with a wider variety of BIOS and EFI implementations. GRUB is used in EFI mode. Isolinux/syslinux is used in BIOS mode. The tools and framework used by Linux Mint to produce its ISO images were updated and are now based on the latest version of live-build. Distribution Release: Linux Mint 6 "LMDE" |

The Linux Mint team have announced the launch of a new version of the project's Debian-based branch. The new version 6 (codename "Faye") of Linux Mint Debian Edition offers most of the same technology as Linux Mint's main, Ubuntu-based branch, but using Debian "Stable" as the core operating system. "LMDE is a Linux Mint project which stands for 'Linux Mint Debian Edition'. Its goal is to ensure Linux Mint would be able to continue to deliver the same user experience, and how much work would be involved, if Ubuntu was ever to disappear. LMDE is also one of our development targets, to guarantee the software we develop is compatible outside of Ubuntu. LMDE aims to be as similar as possible to Linux Mint, but without using Ubuntu. The package base is provided by Debian instead. Known issues: to install LMDE on an existing LVM partition you must first remove it from the LVM volumes and groups to which it belongs; in manual partitioning mode, note that the installer will auto-mount all swap partitions, these partitions will also be placed in /etc/fstab in the installed system." The Linux Mint team maintains two key branches of its distribution. Mint's main edition is based on Ubuntu while a second branch, Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE), is based on Debian 'Stable'. The Linux Mint team has published a new development snapshot of LMDE. "LMDE is a Linux Mint project which stands for 'Linux Mint Debian Edition'. Its goal is to ensure Linux Mint would be able to continue to deliver the same user experience, and how much work would be involved, if Ubuntu was ever to disappear. LMDE is also one of our development targets, to guarantee the software we develop is compatible outside of Ubuntu. LMDE aims to be as similar as possible to Linux Mint, but without using Ubuntu. The package base is provided by Debian instead. Tips: in the live session, the username is 'mint' and the password is empty (i.e. just press Enter if asked for a password); if your screen resolution is too low, some windows might not fit in the screen; while pressing the ALT key, you can grab any part of a window with the mouse and move it across the screen; to guarantee compatibility with non-PAE processors, the 32-bit versions of Linux Mint Debian come with a 686 non-PAE kernel by default." The new release includes a number of improvements to the login screen, Flatpak packages can now be included as Featured items in the software centre, and the layout of the Pix application has been overhauled. "Slick Greeter, which is in charge of the login screen, was given support for multiple keyboard layouts. The indicator located on the top-right corner of the screen opens a menu which lets you switch between layouts. System layouts defined in /etc/default/keyboard are listed first for easy access. Below that a sub-menu lists all supported layouts. Touchpad support was also improved. Tap-to-click is detected and enabled automatically in the login screen. The layout used for Onboard, the on-screen keyboard is configurable. The keyboard navigation was improved. The arrow keys can be used to edit the password which is being typed. A revealer icon appears when the password is clicked or edited. This revealer can be used to toggle the visibility of the password." The Linux Mint team have announced the release of Linux Mint 21.1 "Vera". The new release makes handling Flatpak packages smoother, integrating Flatpak support into the update manager and making it easier to work with both traditional deb packages and Flatpaks in the software centre. "Flatpak support was added to the Update Manager. Flatpak applications and runtimes can be updated like any other supported types of software. The Software Manager features a refreshed user interface which makes it easier to distinguish between Flatpaks and system packages. When looking at an application which is available both as a system package and a Flatpak, you can switch back and forth between its two versions. New Flatpaks from Flathub are automatically added to the Software Manager on a daily basis."
