Distribution Release: Endless OS 6.0.0 |
Endless OS is a Linux-based operating system which provides a simplified and streamlined user experience using a customized desktop environment. The project's latest release is Endless OS 6.0.0. The new version features a dark theme for night time use, updated applications for working with music and images, and updated screen recording tools. "Endless OS 6 comes with a redesigned, easier to use, and more interactive screenshot and screen recording experience. Tapping the PrintScr key or the new icon in the system menu brings up an interactive menu to select an area, app, or screen to take a screenshot or recording of. It even remembers the area you select between uses, making it even easier to take several screenshots for comparison. It might seem like a niche thing, but we think you'll like it the next time you want to share a screenshot or recording of something on your screen. Rounding out the new features in Endless OS 6 are a few new and updated apps. For new installs of Endless OS 6, you'll now get the clean and simple Music app for listening to a local library plus the new Decibels app to listen to one-off audio files, e.g. to preview a downloaded voicemail or other recording." João Paulo Rechi Vita has announced the release of Endless OS 5.0.0, a significant upgrade of the project's app-centric, Debian-based distribution featuring the EOS Shell (a fork of GNOME Shell), available for x86_64 and arm64 (including Raspberry Pi and Pinebook) computers. The new version introduces a refreshed desktop experience, multiple workspaces and an all-new app centre. Users of Endless OS 4 will need to upgrade to version 4.0.14 before they can upgrade to version 5.0.0. Endless OS 5.0.0 is out. Endless OS 5 continues to be the app-centric operating system you’ve come to know and love, but the experience has been refreshed based on user testing and feedback. At a glance, you’ll notice the grid of apps and search are largely the same, while the taskbar a the bottom of the screen in Endless OS 4 has been split into two more purposeful elements in Endless OS 5 - the bottom dash for your favorite and running apps at the bottom of the screen, and the top panel with more information and system status at the top of the screen." The project's latest release is version 4.0.0 which introduces long-term support. With Endless OS 4, we are introducing a long-term support version of the OS, which will be supported for a number of years even after Endless OS 5 is released. Please see the long-term support documentation for more details, including how to configure a system to use the LTS version of Endless OS. We have updated our low-level software platform, for improved hardware support, performance, and stability Linux kernel 5.11 and updated linux-firmware, bringing support for the latest PC hardware and several fixes to existing drivers and core kernel code." This release updates the GNOME desktop to version 3.38: "Endless OS 3.9.0. This release of Endless OS has been updated to GNOME 3.38, bringing new features, substantial performance improvements and bug fixes. During this development cycle, the Endless desktop team has focused on bringing features originally developed in Endless OS back to GNOME - such as the ability to drag-and-drop icons on the desktop, and applying parental controls to installed applications - so that our work on usability and safety can reach users beyond Endless OS. Distribution Release: Endless OS 3.6.3 |
The Endless OS team has published an update to their distribution's 3.6 series. The new update offers a few new key features to help the computer's owner lock down the system and also fixes some issues with booting and logging into the desktop. "Endless OS 3.6.3 was released to existing users today. Images for new installations will be available soon. It is now possible to restrict users’ access to web browsers via parental controls. This will prevent the user from running the built-in web browser, or any of the browsers available through the app centre (including Chrome and Firefox). It is now possible to apply parental controls to administrator users, as well as standard users. This allows you to (for example) hide violent games from the app center, or prevent yourself from running certain installed apps (similar to 'digital wellbeing' features on other platforms). If your administrator user has a password set, the password is required to change these settings. Startup and login errors fixed: Between 3.6.0 and 3.6.2, there were two known issues which could prevent you from booting or logging into your computer. Both are addressed in this release." Further details can be found in the project's release announcement. Download: eos-eos3.6-amd64-amd64.190910-121905.base.iso (2,081MB, signature, torrent, pkglist). |

Distribution Release: Endless OS 3.5.4 |
Will Thompson has announced the release of Endless OS 3.5.4, the latest version of the project's Linux-based operating system with a simplified desktop (forked from GNOME 3) and without any package management system. The latest version introduces new parental controls for applications: "Administrator users may now control which apps can be installed or launched by standard users on the same computer. The following controls are available: restricting the apps shown in the app center based on their content rating - for example, if the option is set to show apps suitable for age 3, violent video games will not be visible in the app center; prohibiting installing new apps entirely; restricting access to certain apps which are already installed on the system. In this initial version of the feature, it is not possible to restrict access to built-in apps, including the web browser, file manager, text editor and video player. We expect to enable this in a future version of Endless OS." Read the rest of the release announcement for a full list of changes.
