A new stable version of Feren OS, called "October snapshot", has been released. Feren OS is a desktop-oriented Linux distribution based on Linux Mint, shipping with Cinnamon as the default desktop environment. The latest release comes with a number of desktop tweaks and it is also available for 32-bit computers: "Changes-wise, there isn't that much to talk about regarding the Feren OS frontend, as most of the work has been done improving the backend of many applications Feren OS has of its own. Here are a few of the noticeable changes: new background set and a new desktop environment supporting the easy viewing of this and newer background sets; Feren OS is now upgradable to non-LTS Ubuntu versions; the Feren OS theme has also seen some noticeable tweaks - gradients are now colour-neutral, using some transparency tweaks and scrollbars are now designed after the Breeze theme using the code from the Breeze GTK+ 3 and GTK+ 2 themes; theme colouriser will now support community-made theme colouriser scripts; backend fixes and changes." Besides providing detailed information and screenshots, the release announcement also hints at continued development of a new "KDE" edition of Feren OS (currently available as an "experimental" release). Distribution Release: Feren OS 2021.10 |
Feren OS is a desktop Linux distribution based on Ubuntu and featuring the KDE Plasma desktop. The project's latest snapshot is Feren OS 2021.10 which includes a new lock screen, new splash screen, and a customized Firefox experience. "The once scrapped configuration for Firefox has now made its way, now repurposed and improved for normal browser usage, into Firefox in Feren OS, both via a new package called firefox-config-feren, and an update to Web Browser Manager that now pre-installs this configuration of Firefox alongside the browser itself, effective starting Feren OS 2021.10. Enjoy Mozilla Firefox, now with: Compact Mode and no titlebar by default. None of that Stories stuff in New Tab (and other New Tab distractions). No Pocket by default. Library being in the toolbar (as was intended by Mozilla themselves during early Proton design ideas) instead of Pocket’s button. Most, if not all, the Telemetry values being off, including the ones you can’t change via Settings. Home button in the toolbar by default. Skipped Welcome Screens to allow you to get right into the action.... Additional information is provided in the project's release announcement. Distribution Release: Feren OS 2020.11 |
The Feren OS developer has announced the release of Feren OS 2020.11, a major update of the project's desktop-oriented Linux distribution based on Ubuntu and featuring the KDE Plasma desktop. This release updates the underlying system to Ubuntu 20.04 and also brings about the discontinuation of the "Classic" edition with Cinnamon. The user interface has also been redesigned and updated: "The complete redesign of Feren OS's theme also makes its debut in this snapshot of Feren OS, sporting a darker theme, a new dark theme, a new maximise icon, a custom Qt 5 application style based on Adwaita-Qt, an Adwaita-based GTK 2 and GTK 3 theme, and way more improvements, mainly formed from user feedback on prior Feren OS themes. The default font used throughout Feren OS's user interface has been changed to the Inter font, having used Open Sans and Lato beforehand. This should give Feren OS's interface a fresher and more professional look while also adding to the freshness of the new Feren OS theme. Based on user feedback, Feren OS November 2020 Snapshot adds two accent colours to the pre-defined accent colours available out of the box - purple and banana." Distribution Release: Feren OS 2019.12 |
Feren OS, a desktop Linux distribution based on Linux Mint, has been updated to version 2019.12. This is the project's first release featuring KDE Plasma desktop by default, although a separate "Classic" edition with Cinnamon is also available. From the release announcement: "Today I am proud to announce the release of Feren OS December 2019 Snapshot, code-named 'Yttrium'. This is one of the biggest snapshots in the history of Feren OS. The first and most important change in this snapshot is the move to KDE Plasma. This means that Feren OS now has a completely different desktop environment to what it had before. KDE Plasma is an extremely stable and lightweight desktop environment in Feren OS, and it has way more support from the community since it's one of the major desktop environments available in Linux. The default Feren OS theme has had a bunch of minor visual tweaks. The most noticeable tweak is that menus are now dark and transparent rather than white and opaque. This, alongside Plasma's blur effect, makes the desktop look way more sleek by default." Distribution Release: Feren OS 2019.07 |
Feren OS is a desktop Linux distribution based on Linux Mint's main edition. The project has published a new quarterly snapshot which introduces new themes, a new icon set, and a new splash screen at boot time. On a more technical note, this snapshot fixes an issue with repository signing keys: "Unfortunately, another smaller change had to be made to all the ISOs in this snapshot, due to a mess up on my part with deleting the original package signing keys for the Feren OS repositories by accident. The old signing keys had to be replaced with new ones, and so current users ended up getting 'NO_PUBKEY' errors on APT Package List Updates. While the ISOs for the previous snapshot were updated first to include the new signing keys out of the box, this snapshot is technically the first snapshot to do so too. If you're suffering from that issue, go here to get instructions on how to fix it. Because of the fact that the old boot screen broke on the Feren OS HWE-included ISO image, I decided to completely re-do the boot screen, basing it on the 'Breeze' Plymouth Theme that KDE neon uses by default." A complete list of changes can be found in the project's release announcement. Download (MD5): Feren OS x64 Linux 4.15.iso (1,876MB, pkglist). |

Distribution Release: Feren OS 2019.04 |
Feren OS is a desktop Linux distribution based on Linux Mint's main edition. The project's latest snapshot introduces new wallpapers, new themes and a new installer for the 64-bit build. "Feren OS 64-Bit with Cinnamon now has a new installer and a new OEM Setup Experience. Both now make use of the Calamares system installer and now provide a much faster installation experience from beginning to end. For instructions on how to make use of the new OEM setup experience, click here. Theme improvements: With this snapshot, you can also see some noticeable adjustments to the Feren OS Light Theme, including but not limited to: A re-done GTK2 theme based on the latest Arc GTK2 theme that now matches with the overall theming of Feren OS once more. A darkened GTK3 theme making the light theme more neutral. Backend changes to the Cinnamon themes to make them more consistent as well as changing the theme slightly to match better with the new darkened light theme. Metacity/Window Borders updates to make the title bars consistent with the new theme. WinStyle and macStyle Window Borders (Metacity themes) have been re-done to support accent colour-dependant colourisation for supported GTK3 themes." Distribution Release: feren OS 2018.01 |
feren OS is a desktop Linux distribution based on Linux Mint's main edition. The feren OS distribution ships with the Cinnamon desktop environment and includes the WINE compatibility layer for running Windows applications. The project's latest snapshot features many new wallpapers, a new software manager and an updated theme manager: "Software has been replaced, by Software Manager. Before you say anything, I made sure this was the Software Manager I wanted, but ever since I saw the first ever screenshot of the newly revamped Mint Software Manager, I knew that was what I wanted a Software Center to be like in feren OS, until it gets its own one, so, when Mint 18.3 was released, alongside upgrading feren OS users to the base of 18.3, I also made a quick job at replacing GNOME Software with Mint's one, in the most user-friendly way possible, without getting in the way of users, and yeah, this is the new Software Center feren OS uses, and already, it does package and app searching from PPAs way better than GNOME Software did. Also, Flatpak is also now installed too." Further information can be found in the project's release announcement. Download (SHA256): feren OS x64.iso (1,970MB, pkglist). |

The project has announced that it is moving forward as a rolling release distribution, based off Linux Mint 18.2. The new snapshot features a number of other improvements, including making optional components available through the Welcome screen. "After a long time, lot of blood, sweat and tears put into it, and lots of password entering, feren OS is a rolling-release operating system built on the foundations of Linux Mint, designed to be stable. This Snapshot is based on Linux Mint 18.2, and is a defining point for feren OS as a distribution. Changes in this release: Linux Mint base upgraded to 18.2; some applications were removed and are now available for installation from the Welcome screen, Recommended Applications; alternative theme utility Themes is now download-only; feren Welcome has received a huge upgrade, now resizable, movable, themeable; the USB boot issue has now been fixed...." Distribution Release: feren OS 2017.0 |
The feren OS project develops a desktop distribution based on Linux Mint and the Cinnamon desktop environment; it also includes WINE for running Windows applications. Version 2017.0, which is based on Linux Mint 18.1, has been released. The new version enables automatic updates and replaces Mint's Welcome screen with one forked from the Budgie desktop. The new version includes an updated theme manager which provides previews of available themes. Also new to this release - the boot menu contains an option for enabling 'nomodeset' to work around buggy video drivers: "'No Mode Set' for NVIDIA drivers now incompatible with the other options in the boot menu. Just look for the 'No Mode Set' option in the boot menu of the live CD if you can't boot from the other options and/or have NVIDIA drivers. If you have to, once you've installed the OS, hold the SHIFT key to force the boot menu to appear. If you still cannot boot, try one of the following solutions: try with 'nouveau.noaccel=1' instead of 'nomodeset'; use the 'Compatibility mode' to boot and install feren OS...." Further details on the new release, along with workarounds for common issues, can be found in the release announcement for feren OS 2017.0. Download (MD5): feren OS 2017.0 x64 (3,395MB, pkglist). |
