Development Release: SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 SP1 RC 1 |
SUSE has announced the availability of the first release candidate for SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 SP1. The new snapshot includes many bug fixes and several package updates. "SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 Service Pack 1 is entering the Release Candidate Phase since we are closer and closer to the official release date (so called First Customer Shipment) scheduled for mid-June 2019. SUSE Engineering Team has a special mindset regarding the Release Candidate phase, because we are targeting to have FCS quality with those milestones. We have the constraints of considering RC milestones like FCS releases, in term of bug fixing and providing security fixes, which means that we are focusing on stability but there is also less room for intrusive changes. Of course, exceptions happen and developing, stabilizing, building and testing an entire operating system and products around it are complex tasks. Nevertheless with the help of our talented engineers, powerful tool like Open Build Service and openQA, and the ability for external parties to participate in the development phase, we will be able to deliver the best SUSE Linux Enterprise version yet." A list of package updates and changes can be found in the distribution's release announcement and in the release notes. Download links are also in the release notes. |

Review: Novell Linux Desktop 9 |
eWEEK has published a review of Novell Linux Desktop (NLD) 9: "Overall, however, we were very impressed with Novell's efforts to integrate the components that make up NLD 9. For instance, we found that the version of OpenOffice.org that Novell has included was configured to use the appropriate external application for operations such as sending a working document to an e-mail recipient. In addition, NLD 9's OpenOffice.org component is configured to adopt the file dialogs of a user's chosen desktop environment, which contributes to NLD 9's smooth finish. Unlike Sun's JDS, which uses the default SuSE update mechanism for fetching and installing software, NLD ships with Ximian's Red Carpet software management tool."
