LibreELEC is a minimal Linux distribution for running the Kodi media centre software. The LibreELEC team has published a new release, LibreELEC 9.0.2, which introduces new default firewall tools for protection on public networks, moves system updates to their own menu, and makes it possible to change secure shell passwords. There are some new features too: "LibreELEC 9.0.2 (Leia) has arrived, based upon Kodi 18.2. The 9.0.2 release contains many changes and refinements to user experience and a complete overhaul of the underlying OS core to improve stability and extend hardware support. Kodi 18 also brings new features like Kodi Retroplayer and DRM support that (equipped with an appropriate add-on) allows Kodi to unofficially stream content from services like Netflix and Amazon. Changes since LibreELEC 9.0.1: updated Kodi to 18.2; updated Linux kernel to 4.19.36; fixed TBS 5520SE tuning; fixed Zotac remotes; fixed pvr.hts (Tvheadend) timeshift (partly). Settings add-on: changeable SSH passwords; default firewall (iptables) with simple configurations for home and public networks; updates are moved to their own menu, other options are cleaned up a little; Safe Mode boot when Kodi experiences start-up problems." The development team behind LibreELEC, a multi-platform Linux distribution featuring the Kodi media centre, have released a new update, version 12.2.0. This is a minor update that improves support for Intel hardware and upgrades Kodi to version 21.2: "LibreELEC 12.2 with Kodi 21.2 'Omega' is released. The main purpose of the LibreELEC 12.2 release is hardware support - bumping kernels and display components to better handle current and recent Intel hardware and keeping Raspberry Pi boards aligned with RPiOS. The release contains Kodi 21.2 'Omega' with a small number of additional improvements that Kodi backported to Omega since the Kodi 21.2 release (no 21.3 release is planned). The NVIDIA Legacy 340.xx driver remained usable for six years after NVIDIA discontinued support, but it no longer compiles with the latest X.Org release so has been dropped from the Generic-Legacy image for LibreELEC 12.2 and the future 13.0 release. This impacts older NVIDIA cards, which are unfortunately the majority of active NVIDIA installations." Continue to the release announcement for further details. The LibreELEC development team has announced the release of LibreELEC 12.0.0, a major new update of project's multi-platform Linux distribution featuring the Kodi media centre. The new release ships with Linux kernel 6.6.28 and Kodi 21.0: "LibreELEC 12.0 has released as final release, bringing Kodi (Omega) 21.0. With the new release cycle we changed many devices to 64-bit architectures, including Rasberry Pi 4 and 5. If using Widevine DRM (required for various copy-protected video add-ons like Prime Video, Netflix) on one of these devices and updating from LibreELEC 11, Widevine DRM will need to be re-installed on these devices due to the changed architecture. LibreELEC 11.0 installs will not automatically update, but you can manually update. LibreELEC installs from before LibreELEC 10.0 must make a clean install due to the Python 3 changes since Kodi 19. The developers of LibreELEC, a project that develops a multi-platform Linux distribution featuring the Kodi media centre, have released the final build of the 11.x series. Version 11.0.4 updates Kodi to version 20.2: "The final stable version of LibreELEC 11.0.4 has been released, bringing Kodi (Nexus) 20.2 with additional fixes. With the final release of LibreELEC 11 we are adding experimental RPi 5 support. The focus of RPi 5 development is on Kodi 21, which will be released in early 2024. The only known issue so far is that updating the EEPROM is not yet supported in the LE setting (run rpi-eeprom-update -a from the shell). Changes since 11.0.3: Kodi updated to 20.2 with additional fixes; Linux kernel updated to 6.1.68. Raspberry Pi - 50/60fps H264 HW decoding may need force_turbo=1 or core_freq_min=500 in config.txt to avoid AV-sync-issues/skipping. Kodi at RPi4 runs in 4096x2160 instead of 3840x2160 on 4k TVs after fresh installation. Configure Kodi as described at the Wiki and optionally add hdmi_enable_4kp60=1 to config.txt and enable HDMI UltraHD Deep Color in your TV's HDMI port configuration to get 4kp60 modes." LibreELEC 11.0.0, a major new version from the project that develops a multi-platform Linux distribution centred around the Kodi media centre, has been released. The new version updates Kodi to version 20.0 and re-introduces support for older Amlogic devices: "The final stable version of LibreELEC 11, bringing Kodi 'Nexus' 20.0, has been released. With the new release cycle, we add a Generic-Legacy image supporting NVIDIA cards, Chrome Browser add-ons and older hardware. We also re-introduce support for older Amlogic devices (S905, S905X/D, S912). LibreELEC 10.0 installs will not automatically update, but you can update manually. Older LibreELEC installs must make a clean install due to the Python 3 changes since Kodi 19. The Generic image now runs the same GBM/V4L2 graphics stack we have long used with ARM platforms. It now supports HDR with recent AMD and Intel GPUs. We have added a Generic-Legacy image that runs the older X11 graphics stack used in LE v7-v10. LibreELEC 10.0.4, the latest stable version of the specialist, multi-platform Linux distribution with the Kodi media centre, is now available. This release ships with an updated Kodi 19.5: "LibreELEC 10.0.4, bringing Kodi (Matrix) 19.5, has been released. Users of LibreELEC 10.x will receive an automatic update (if enabled). LibreELEC 9.2 installs are not automatically updated, and users will need to manually update. Changes since 10.0.3: update Kodi to 19.5; updated RPi firmware; AMD GPU fixes. Raspberry Pi 2 - 3 - the new video pipeline used in LibreELEC 10.x does not support enhanced HEVC software decoding, if HEVC media playback is important to you please remain on LibreELEC 9.2 releases or consider a Raspberry Pi 4 upgrade (RPi4 has native HEVC hardware decoding). Raspberry Pi 4 and Raspberry Pi 400 hardware supports: HDMI output up to 4kp60; H264 and H265 HW decoding; HDR output (HDR10 and HLG); HD audio; passthrough (Dolby TrueHD, DTS HD); hardware deinterlacing support (PVR/DVD); 10/12bit video output." The project's 10.0.2 snapshot updates Kodi to version 19.4: "The final version of LibreELEC 10.0.2 has been released, bringing Kodi 'Matrix' 19.4 to our users. Users of LibreELEC 10 beta or RC1 get an automatic update to the final version. LibreELEC 9.2 setups will not be automatically updated, you will need to manually update. We can offer stable and good working versions for Allwinner, Generic and Rockchip devices. The RPi4 is also in good shape but the codebase is rather new, so it is not polished yet. New at the 10.0.2 release is the support for the RPi2 and RPi3. Changes since 10.0.1: update Kodi to 19.4; several minor package updates; support for RPi2, RPi3; RPi deinterlacing support; RPi CM4 NVME support; RPi4 support for 10/12bit video output; RPi fixes blank screen at some setups; RPi multiple decoder fixes. We can offer stable and good working versions for Allwinner, Generic and Rockchip devices. When you use profiles, LibreELEC's Settings Add-on can crash while switching to another profile. The issue is known, but we have currently no fix for it. The release announcement mentions new development branch has also dropped support for older versions of the Raspberry Pi series of computers: "Kernel changes for RPi4 users combined with no release for RPi2/3 users and discontinued support for RPi0/1 users means signifant changes in the user experience (Raspberry Pi users are a combined 80% of our active installed base). We are pretty confident RPi4 users will like the update since it brings HBR audio and initial HDR video support, but it’s still a big change." As discussed in the recent Upcoming Changes blog post it, the 10.0 release is a disruptive and limited hardware release. If you have not read the blog post - please do - because we are not releasing images for all hardware. In summary: this is a stable release for Generic (x86_64 PCs). Stable-Beta for Allwinner and Rockchip. Stable “Alpha” for Raspberry Pi 4 as the code is still very new. RPi 2/3 are still in development targeting an LE10.2 release. RPi 0/1 are discontinued. Escuelas Linux
Escuelas Linux is a complete, live operating system offering a range of educational software aimed at pupils and students, from preschools to high schools. It is based on Bodhi Linux, a Debian-based distribution with a desktop called "Moksha" (a continuation of the Enlightenment 17 window manager). Escuelas Linux provides one user account that is completely configured, with all included educational applications configured and ready for use. It also includes a "RestoreUser" function to easily restore all applications to their default settings, as well as a "ReinstateUser" functionality which can be used to clean an account by deleting all files created by a user.
