Patrick Schleizer has announced the release of Whonix 15, a major new version of the project's Debian-based distribution designed for secure and anonymous internet browsing. Whonix deploys the Tor network on top of a heavily configured Debian system which is run inside multiple virtual machines, thus providing a substantial layer of protection from malware and IP address leaks. The new release is based on the upcoming Debian 10 "Buster": "After approximately one year of development, the Whonix project is proud to announce the release of Whonix 15. Whonix 15 is based on the Debian 10 'Buster' distribution. This means that users have access to many new software packages in concert with existing packages, such as a modern branch of GnuPG. Major changes and new features: kernel hardening; blacklist uncommon network protocols; systemd unit sandboxing; improve entropy collection through extensive research and installation by default of jitterentropy-rngd; research implications of Spectre, Meltdown, Retpoline and L1 Terminal Fault (L1TF) versus Whonix...." Read the release announcement and the changelog for further details. Whonix is provided as OVA files (either with Xfce or with a command-line interface only) to be imported into VirtualBox; download links: Whonix-XFCE-15.0.0.3.3.ova (1,595MB, SHA512, signature, torrent, pkglist), Whonix-CLI-15.0.0.3.3.ova (1,053MB, SHA512, signature, torrent). |

About Whonix
|
Whonix is an operating system focused on anonymity, privacy and security. It is based on the Tor anonymity network, Debian GNU/Linux and security by isolation. Whonix consists of two parts: One solely runs Tor and acts as a gateway, which is called Whonix-Gateway. The other, which is called Whonix-Workstation, is on a completely isolated network. Only connections through Tor are possible. With Whonix, you can use applications and run servers anonymously over the Internet. DNS leaks are impossible, and even malware with root privileges cannot find out the user's real IP.

Distribution Release: Whonix 17 |
|
Patrick Schleizer has announced the release of Whonix 17, a major update of the project's Debian-based distribution designed for advanced security and privacy via its fail-safe, automatic and desktop-wide use of the Tor network. Whonix uses a heavily reconfigured Debian base inside multiple virtual machines, thus providing a substantial layer of protection from malware and IP address leaks. It is designed to be run inside a virtual machine. This is the distribution's first stable release based on Debian 12: "Whonix 17 has been released. Major changes: port to Debian 12 'Bookworm'; update Tor Browser to 12.5.1; use Tor packages from Debian stable instead of Tor Project repository; enable zsh by default for new builds (might get reverted depending on ticket Qubes-Whonix issue 8343; replacing initramfs-tools with Dracut; renamed Qubes templates; renamed 'whonix-gw-16' to 'whonix-gateway-17' and 'whonix-ws-16' to 'whonix-workstation-17'; stop using abbreviations for Whonix templates issue 1778." See the release announcement for further information, upgrade instructions and known issues. Whonix 17 is available in the form of an OVA file that can be imported into VirtualBox; download from here: Whonix-Xfce-17.0.3.0.ova (2,062MB, SHA512, signature, torrent, pkglist). |
