Distribution Release: Mageia 9 |
Mageia is a general purpose, independent desktop distribution from the Mandriva family of projects. The project's latest release is version 9 which includes improves to the installer, package management, and minimal install size of the distribution. "Smaller disk footprint - the size of the minimal install (when disabling the recommended packages) has been reduced, it's the smallest since Mageia 4; the RPM database has switched to SQLite - the RPM database no longer uses the old and unmaintained Berkeley DB, it now uses the modern SQLite, conversion is performed during upgrade from Mageia 8; NFS support is done using system tools rather than our 15 years old forked NFS code, thus gaining support for NFSv4 and co; when using an HTTP server, it's now possible to specify a port different than the default 80; the stage1 images are compressed with zstd instead of gzip; lots of bug fixes and improvements in the partitioner; add 'downloader=curl' in order to switch from wget to curl for downloading packages; the rescue system has been enhanced; live ISO image - the NetworkManager system service is now enabled by default on the Plasma live ISO image (this was already done for the GNOME and Xfce live ISO iimages in previous releases) - this allows network connections to be managed via the Plasma system settings tool as well as by the traditional Mageia network management tools." Additional details can be found in the release notes. Distribution Release: Mageia 8 |
Mageia is a community fork of the now-discontinued Mandriva distribution. The Mageia distribution provides a general purpose operating system with a focus on easy to use, pre-configured desktop environments. The project's latest release is Mageia 8 which improves boot time performance, mostly removes dependencies on Python 2, and package management information is now compressed using Zstd to make updating parsing package data faster. "Faster package metadata parsing Urpmi metadata are compressed with Zstd instead of xz, resulting in faster parsing. Python 2 is mostly dead Most python2 modules and software were removed. The ARM (Advanced RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computing) Machine) port rebooted during Mageia 7 days has been enhanced. The core is available for ARMv7 and AArch64. There is no traditional installer for now, and it is still considered experimental, but most of the distribution was built successfully on both architectures (see our ARM status overview for details). The plan is to provide installation images for popular ARM devices in the coming months. There is no ETA for those as of Mageia 8's release. Drakboot is now somewhat able to set up UEFI on AArch64." Additional information can be found in the distribution's release notes. Development Release: Mageia 8 RC |
The Mageia team have announced a release candidate for Mageia 8. The development snapshot includes several package upgrades, including a move to the latest version of PHP and the latest long-term support release of the kernel. There have also been a number of video driver updates. "PHP was recently updated to 8.0.2, therefore, feedback on PHP applications will be helpful to check for issues. The NVIDIA drivers have been switched to gl-vendor-neutral-dispatch, so MESA applications can work on such systems, with 460 series on x86_64 and 390 series still available. Note that the NVIDIA 340 series is no longer supported. DrakX, our installer, will switch supported systems to NVIDIA 390 where possible, or use the nouveau driver if they are unsupported by the newer drivers. For AMD graphic cards based on Southern Islands family (Tahiti, Pitcairn, Oland, Verde, Hainan) and Sea Islands family (Kaveri, Bonaire, Hawaii, Kabini, Mullins) we are now defaulting to the newer amdgpudriver instead of the older Radeon, and feedback, if it works properly or not on your hardware, would be helpful." Further details are available in the release announcement. Distribution Release: Mageia 6.1 |
Donald Stewart has announced the release of Mageia 6.1, an updated build of the desktop-oriented Linux distribution which was launched in 2010 as a fork of the defunct Mandriva Linux. The new version represents the accumulation of all software updates since the release of Mageia 6 some 15 months ago: "It is with great pleasure that we announce the release of Mageia 6.1. This release brings all of the updates and development that has gone into Mageia 6 into fresh installation media, giving users a kernel that supports hardware released after Mageia 6. The new installations will benefit from the countless updates that current fully updated Mageia systems will have, allowing new installations to avoid the need for a large update post-install. So if you are currently running an up to date Mageia 6 system, there is no need to reinstall Mageia 6.1 as you will already be running the same packages. This release is available with only Live media, i.e. Live Plasma, Live GNOME and Live Xfce in 64-bit editions, and Live Xfce in 32-bit edition. A network installation is also available, for users wanting more granular control over the installation. Some of the release highlights include: Firefox 60.2, Chromium 68, LibreOffice 5.3.7, KDE Plasma 5.12.2, GNOME 3.24.3, Xfce 4.12, VLC 3.0.2, Linux kernel 4.14.70." Development Release: Mageia 6 Sta 2 |
Donald Stewart has announced the availability of the second development build of the upcoming Mageia 6. Labeled as "Sta 2" and considered a "stabilisation snapshot", this testing build arrives eight month after the first snapshot. Besides the usual 64-bit KDE Plasma and GNOME live DVDs, this release also provides separate 32-bit and 64-bit live DVDs with Xfce: "Everyone at Mageia is delighted to announce the release of our latest development milestone, our second stabilisation snapshot (sta2). We are now one step closer to the release of Mageia 6. Knowing that our previous snapshot, sta1, was released in July 2016, this new development release was long overdue. We talked at length about the reasons for this delay in a previous blog post. In a few words, it can be summarized as a succession of delays due to key contributors unavailability, infrastructure issues, upstream Plasma bugs...." Distribution Release: Mageia 5.1 |
Donald Stewart has announced the release of Mageia 5.1, an updated build of the distribution current stable branch. This unscheduled version was put together due to delays delivering the upcoming Mageia 6 which is currently in development. From the release announcement: "We are very pleased to announce the release of Mageia 5.1. This release is a respin of the Mageia 5 installation and live ISO images, based on the Mageia 5 repository and incorporating all updates to allow for an up-to-date installation without the need to install almost a year-and-a-half worth of updates. It is therefore recommended for new installations and upgrades from Mageia 4. If you are currently running Mageia 5 then there is no need to install Mageia 5.1 as it is the same as your system, provided that updates have been installed. Mageia 5.1 ships with many updated packages, including LibreOffice 4.4.7, Linux kernel 4.4.32, KDE4 4.14.5, GNOME 3.14.3 and countless other updates." Development Release: Mageia 6 Sta 1 |
The developers of Mageia have announced the release of a new testing snapshot, Mageia 6 Sta 1. The new snapshot features a move to the GRUB 2 boot loader and KDE's Plasma 5 desktop environment. "The first stabilization snapshot, as the name suggests, aims to start bringing everything together and getting the new software stable enough for release. Most of the big updates since dev1 have been moving from beta/RC releases of major software components to stable ones, which will hopefully give a nicely polished feel to the release. GRUB 2 is now the default bootloader as GRUB Legacy has finally run its course. We have also fully switched from KDE 4 to Plasma 5, as well as solved issues with localization." Further details and a list of core packages can be found in the project's release announcement and in the release notes. Development Release: Mageia 6 Dev 1 |
The Mageia team has announced the availability of a new development release, Mageia 6 Dev 1. The development snapshot features version 4.4.5 of the Linux kernel, Plasma 5.5.95, GNOME 3.19.2, LibreOffice 5.1 and Firefox 45. "After the delays caused by upgrading the major parts of the base system and switching to the Plasma 5 desktop environment, we are very happy to announce that the first development milestone of Mageia 6 has been released and is ready for testing by the community. Note that only the classical ISO images have been released, those being the i586 and x86_64 DVD images. The live ISO images are not quite ready. If the live images can be made functional soon, they may also be released, otherwise they will come with the next milestone release. The extra time we have had has allowed for newer versions of Plasma, GNOME, and other major components. Also, it has allowed us to provide support for newer hardware thanks to an updated kernel." Additional information can be found in the project's release announcement. Download (pkglist): Mageia-6-dev1-x86_64-DVD.iso (4,422MB, MD5, torrent, signature). |

Distribution Release: Mageia 5 |
Rémi Verschelde has announced the release of Mageia 5. Mageia is a community distribution which started as a fork of the Mandriva project, but which now operates as an independent distribution. "After more than one year of development, the Mageia community is very proud to finally deliver this long-awaited release, Mageia 5. This release announcement is a big sigh of relief, an `At last!' that comes straight from the heart of the weary - tired as one can be after long days of hard but rewarding work. And still, we chose to take our time to fix major issues and have a high quality release, without rushing it. Maybe our best release so far, taking into account the impressive work that was done on the installer, both to add new features and to get rid of old bugs." The new release features UEFI support (though not Secure Boot), version 3.19 of the Linux kernel, KDE 4.14 and GNOME 3.14. Cinnamon, MATE, Plasma, LXQt and Xfce desktop are also available. Installation media, live discs and a network install ISO are offered as download options. More information on the new version of Mageia can be found in the project's release announcement, the release notes and errata. Development Release: Mageia 5 RC |
Rémi Verschelde has announced the availability of the release candidate for the upcoming stable release of Mageia 5 - now complete with support for UEFI systems and improved installer: "And we've all waited long enough for Mageia 5 RC - go grab it! While you wait for the download to complete, all restless and eager that you are to try this new release, let's talk a bit about this release candidate. What can you expect from it and why did it take so long? Mageia's developers have been hard at work during this release cycle to add UEFI support to our installer, while the QA contributors were thoroughly testing everything that they could on their hardware. We are now proud to announce that you can install Mageia on UEFI systems fairly easily, using either our live media or the classical installer (except for the dual-DVD which does not support UEFI). This is now the trial by fire for the main feature of Mageia 5 - if you have a UEFI system, please try this release candidate in as many configurations as possible." Development Release: Mageia 5 Beta 3 |
Anne Nicolas has announced the availability of the third beta of the upcoming stable release of Mageia 5: "The release date was a close call between Friday the 13th and Valentine's day... but finally, Mageia 5 beta 3 is available for tests. The road was long and strewn with pitfalls, but the Mageia community is just great and the ISO images are finally available. After a looooong meeting dedicated to reviewing all release critical bugs, a lot of fixes were released that allowed us to finalize the beta 3. EFI is now supported properly on all 64-bits ISO images, but we still need your feedbacks on this. This is now the home stretch. We do need your help more than ever. Please report any problems that you experience in the forums, mailing lists or, preferably, in Bugzilla." See the brief release announcement and read the detailed release notes for more information. Development Release: Mageia 5 Beta 2 |
Claire Revillet has announced the availability of the delayed second beta build of Mageia 5, with further delays leading to the final release: "After several delays the beta 2 of Mageia 5 is finally out. But it seems that, yet again, we need to postpone the Mageia 5 release. Due to various difficulties with EFI boot, GRUB 2 and a few other things, we need a little more time. Only a few members of our QA team have EFI-based machines, so if you do have such equipment please test beta 2 and report your experience. Our QA, packagers and ISO teams are working around the clock to bring us all a stable and secure release, but they still need to work out a few kinks. Therefore, we are planning one more beta release before the release candidate." Here is the brief release announcement, with technical details provided in the release notes. Development Release: Mageia 5 Beta 1 |
Rémi Verschelde has announced the availability of the delayed first beta release of Mageia 5: "It has been a long road, longer than we anticipated, but we're almost there. Mageia 5 Beta 1 is now validated! What took so long (a month and a half longer than originally planned)? The short explanation: some stuff went wrong and other things got broken. The long one: back in September, we decided to update our package manager, RPM, to its latest upstream version 4.12. This was done shortly before our planned mass rebuild, a necessary step before the beta where we rebuild all packages in the distribution to make sure that they are still compatible with the current state of our development stack. Usually, mass rebuilds show that a fair number of packages do not build any more." Continue to the release announcement for a detailed explanation and see the release notes for technical aspects. Development Release: Mageia 5 Alpha 2 |
Anne Nicolas has announced the availability of the second alpha release of Mageia 5: "While many of us are having some well-deserved rest, the Mageia team is still on the deck and working on the Mageia 5 development. This second development release is a big step towards Mageia 5, since most of the core packages have now been updated to their latest stable versions: Linux kernel 3.15.6, X.Org 1.16 and Mesa 10.2.5 for some of the biggest ones. There has also been some important work done towards packaging KDE frameworks 5 (technological foundation for KDE Plasma 5 and KDE Applications 5) and LXQt for Mageia 5 - feel free to try them out, and don't hesitate to report bugs or discuss them on our dev mailing list." Distribution Release: Mageia 4.1 |
Rémi Verschelde has announced the release of Mageia 4.1, an unscheduled maintenance update that fixes a number of security issues and corrects an upstream syslinux bug: "While most of the world is turned towards Brazil to enjoy the World Cup, Mageia has been preparing its own major worldwide event: Mageia 4.1 has been released! If you were not expecting it, you might wonder what this unannounced 4.1 version is. It is a maintenance release for Mageia 4 which contains all security and bug-fix updates that were issued since the release in February 2014. In particular, the Mageia 4 ISO images were affected by an upstream syslinux bug which prevented installation using a burned DVD on some older hardware. Among the updated packages you will find the Linux kernel (version 3.12.21), various drivers for your hardware, and updated software." Here is the full release announcement. After many nights working on the remaining nasty bugs, the CD and DVD images are now available on your favourite public mirrors. Thumbs up to the QA team for the patience and determination for a really long journey until this RC release. This was nearly the last run for the final release. Anne Nicolas has announced the availability of the second beta release of Mageia 4: "Finally Mageia 4 beta 2 is available for testing. Lots of effort was put into fixing the remaining blocking bugs. This is not yet finished but we are proud of the current results. Lots of work was done on drakxtools and classical installer to switch from that good old GTK+ 2 to GTK+ 3. The documentation and i18n teams have also improved a lot of online documents and translations to make it available in as many languages as possible. Your feedback is more essential than ever to finalize this fourth release of Mageia!" Development Release: Mageia 4 Beta 1 |
Anne Nicolas has announced the availability of the first beta release of Mageia 4: "Finally we did it! Mageia 4 beta 1 has been, for sure, the most difficult release we had to face since the beginning of the Mageia project. Lots of good and bad reasons here and again some improvements to be done on our development process. Still, the beta 1 ISO images are now available for testing and we need your feedbacks to improve Mageia 4. A lot of work has been done on various features - installer, dracut, ISO boot, desktop environments... This release also provided an occasion to rebuild all of the distribution and then check that everything is OK for the final version. We are now in freeze period which means no new versions can be submitted by packagers unless there is a good reason." Anne Nicolas has announced that the third and final alpha build of Mageia 4 is now ready for download and testing: "As the alpha ship leaves port for its final voyage, we are very happy to announce the final alpha release for Mageia 4. There is still some work to do to make it stable and to finalise feature, but this will be done during beta releases. We are now four months from the final release. This may seem like a long time but, as always, this will pass very quickly and your feedback and bug reports are absolutely essential now to let us work on and improve your favourite distribution." This release is built on top of Linux kernel 3.11.2 and it includes RPM 4.11.0, systemd 207, Perl 5.18.1, KDE 4.11.1, GNOME 3.10.0 and LibreOffice 4.1.2. Development Release: Mageia 4 Alpha 2 |
Anne Nicolas has announced the availability of the second alpha release of Mageia 4: "We tried to do it and we finally release on time this second alpha for Mageia 4. This is a 'real' alpha, meaning there were lots of breakages and fun in testing. But thanks to packagers and the QA team, you can now discover this new development release. We still have a big work to do on desktop integration. Several features for Mageia 4 are about providing more desktop environments as there is a lot of movement in this area at the moment. Everybody should then find the right one for them depending on their own needs. Now you can join the fun and test this new version. As usual we need your tests as soon and as much as possible." Development Release: Mageia 4 Alpha 1 |
The first alpha build of Mageia 4 has been released for testing: "It has been a proper alpha release this time with 5 rebuilds along the way. The classic installer DVDs may follow, or we may leave them for now and release them with alpha2. Hopefully having all these issues at this stage will make the later stages much simpler. It is actually a good sign that it has been such a rough ride as it shows a lot has happened since Mageia 3 release. Work has begun towards implementing the agreed features and many updated packages are landing in Cauldron. Gnome is in development stage and KDE is at RC stage so issues are to be expected, we’re already aware of some but please report any that you notice on our bugzilla." Major new features: updates to RPM (4.11) and urpmi, which has been given a good turnout and cleanup; Linux kernel 3.8; systemd 195; GRUB is the default boot loader; GRUB 2 is available; revamped package groupings for installation and rpmdrake; KDE 4.10.2, GNOME 3.6, Xfce 4.10; LibreOffice 4.0.3; Steam for Linux...." Development Release: Mageia 3 RC |
Anne Nicolas has announced that the only release candidate and the final development build for Mageia 3 is now ready for testing: "We are now two weeks from the end of the trip (at least we hope we will have no delay). Mageia 3 release candidate is now available for the very final tests. We need your feedback more than ever. The Mageia team is working hard to fix the last annoying bugs - what we call release-critical bugs. How do we qualify a release-critical one? All the bugs that cannot be fixed through updates, mainly in the installer, the kernel and some of the main drivers. As with the beta 4, live ISO images are still in progress and should be released in the coming days." Mageia 3 RC ships with the latest Linux kernel, version 3.8.8, and includes RPM 4.11, systemd 195, KDE 4.10.2, GNOME 3.6.3 and LibreOffice 4.0.2. See the brief release announcement and the detailed release notes for more information. Download the installation DVD image from here: Mageia-3-RC-x86_64-DVD.iso (3,865MB, MD5). Development Release: Mageia 3 Beta 4 |
Anne Nicolas has announced the availability of the fourth and last beta release of Mageia 3: "After all the delays in our Mageia 3 planning, we're very pleased to be able to announce the beta 4 release. Packagers and the QA team have worked hard to fix as many bugs as possible. We are now one month from the Mageia 3 final release, so your tests -- and reports! -- are more important than ever. This beta release comes with nearly all the designs for Mageia 3 integrated -- many thanks to Leo who made the background image for Mageia 2 and then worked again on the Mageia 3 design. Initially we're releasing the i586 and x86_64 DVDs and dual CD using the classical installer; work is still in progress on the live ISOs." Development Release: Mageia 3 Beta 3 |
Anne Nicolas has announced the availability of the third beta release of Mageia 3: "As we said in a previous blog post, Mageia 3 planning was modified to give us some more time -- for one more beta release and to enable us to hunt down more bugs. We finally had to face quite a lot of them during the QA tests of beta 3 ISO images and it took more time than expected to fix them. We've been working really hard, and now we have beta 3 ready for you to start testing. So here are the live ISO images for downloading; the images using the classical installer should be released in a very short time, and we'll post again as soon as that happens. We need you more than ever -- please, download, install and test, test, test." Read the release announcement and release notes for information about the major new features and components. Anne Nicolas has announced the availability of the second beta release of Mageia 3: "We are reaching the final run for Mageia 3 release - the beta 2 ISO images are available for tests. We will need your feedback on the Broadcom wireless chipset. We intentionally removed all proprietary drivers for it. So it comes configured using only the free one. This is a test to check support by the free drivers. If in some way we get too many failures, we will revert it to the hardware that still needs the proprietary driver. This release also comes with the brand-new version of LibreOffice, the 4.0.0 RC2 version." Development Release: Mageia 3 Beta 1 |
Anne Nicolas has announced that, after a brief delay, the first beta release of Mageia 3 is ready testing: "Mageia 3 beta 1 is finally here. This first beta release was a bit tricky as it comes with some major new features in the installer. GRUB 2 has been included as an option. Using DVDs with the classic installer you will be proposed to install some proprietary drivers and/or firmware. Just choose to add 'nonfree' media. QA team is waiting for your bug reports. Please help us to make Mageia 3 meet high-quality level." This beta release ships with the brand-new Linux kernel 3.7 with systemd 195 and it also includes the second beta of the upcoming KDE 4.10 series and GNOME 3.6.2. Read the release announcement and release notes for more information and a list of known issues. Anne Nicolas has announced the availability of the third alpha release of Mageia 3: "Finally the bug hunt was successful and the alpha 3 release is now available for tests. We hope you will enjoy this new one. Upgrade from Mageia 2 is now possible and we need your feedback to make it smooth for final Mageia 3. Major new features: the first stage of the installer will now automatically pass the right URL to stage2; RPM has been upgraded to 4.10.1; urpmi has been re-factored and cleaned, various bugs have been fixed; base system - Linux kernel 3.6.5, systemd 195, Perl has been upgraded to 5.16.1; graphical environments - KDE 4.9.2, Qt 5 beta, GNOME 3.6.1, LibreOffice 3.6...." Development Release: Mageia 3 Alpha 2 |
Anne Nicolas has announced the availability of the second alpha release of Mageia 3: "After some days spent on bug hunting with the QA team, the alpha 2 ISO images are finally ready to be tested. Alpha 3 comes as a full set of ISO images. As usual you will find 2 DVDs using classical installer and a dual-architecture CD. Live ISO images are also available, now using OverlayFS: two 32-bit live CDs only in English and 4 multilingual live DVDs (32-bit and 64-bit). This is a result of a discussion in Mageia community to rethink our current set of ISO images. We still have some work to do on the installer to propose non-free driver installation. We need your report now to improve this new version." The release announcement and release notes have more information. Development Release: Mageia 3 Alpha 1 |
Anne Nicolas has announced that, after a brief delay, the first development build of Mageia 3 is ready for download and testing: "Mageia 3 is on the way and here is the first alpha release. We are now waiting for your tests. As usual, you will find installation DVD images and dual-architecture CD images. However, live CDs are not available. They rely on a specific file system, Unionfs, but Unionfs is not included in the upstream kernel and has to be rebuilt for every new kernel version. It seems that it does not work properly on the 3.5 kernel series. We are investigating the issue, but since Unionfs seems to be unmaintained upstream at the moment, we need to either fix it and maintain it ourselves or we need to switch to another file system like Aufs or OverlayFS." The first alpha release of Mageia 3 comes with Linux kernel 3.5.3, KDE 4.9.0, and GNOME 3.5.91. Read the release announcement and release notes for a brief feature list. Development Release: Mageia 1 Alpha 1 |
Mageia, a new Linux-based operating system forked from Mandriva Linux by former employees and contributors of the popular French distribution, has announced that its first development release is ready for testing: "As promised, the first ISO images of Mageia Alpha 1 (code name 'Cantine') should be available soon on a mirror near you: a 32-bit DVD and 64-bit DVD (live CDs will come with next releases). Another piece of good news is that we have put all the RPMs on the mirrors so fearless developers and testers can do an upgrade from their Mandriva Linux 2010.2 systems. As explained in a previous blog post, this development release should not be used in production. It's not for regular users and not for reviewers either - it is not ready for that at this point. For now, it is mostly directed at Mageia contributors." Here is the full release announcement. Download: mageia-dvd-1-i586.iso (1,973MB, MD5), mageia-dvd-1-x86_64.iso (1,956MB, MD5).
