SprezzOS
SprezzOS was a Debian-based Linux distribution for people who enjoy experimentation, change and a deep understanding of their tools. SprezzOS was perfectly suitable as a first Linux or a quick VM install or the day-to-day workstation of a thirty-something hacker who just wants things to work, but from all of them it will require a willingness to reason out the choices they make, and perhaps recover from bad -- or catastrophic -- decisions.

NixOS is an independent Linux distribution which showcases the Nix advanced package manager. The project's latest release is NixOS 20.09 which is supported through to April 2021 and places a focus on stabilizing the core system. "Stabilization of the NixOS happens a month before planned release. The goal is to have as little as possible continuous integration (Hydra) jobs failing before the release is cut. While we would like to release on time, a high quality release is more important. I think that the 20.09 release highlighted a few weak points with our current release schedule. Discussions have already began on how to improve the process from the beginning, to help minimize risk, and set ourselves up for more successes in the future. I want to thank WORLDofPEACE (my co-release-manager) for helping me with release management items, Thomas Tuegel for helping with Qt and Plasma stabilization, as well as Robert Scott for his work with release stabilization." | NixOS is an independently developed GNU/Linux distribution that aims to improve the state of the art in system configuration management. In NixOS, the entire operating system, including the kernel, applications, system packages and configuration files, are built by the Nix package manager. Nix stores all packages in isolation from each other; as a result there are no /bin, /sbin, /lib or /usr directories and all packages are kept in /nix/store instead. Other innovative features of NixOS include reliable upgrades, rollbacks, reproducible system configurations, source-based model with binaries, and multi-user package management. Although NixOS started as a research project, it is now a functional and usable operating system that includes hardware detection, KDE as the default desktop, and systemd for managing system services.

NixOS is an independently developed GNU/Linux distribution that aims to improve the state of the art in system configuration management using the Nix package manager. The project has published NixOS 24.05 which includes updates to GNOME (version 46), Plasma (version 6), and the Linux kernel (version 6.6). "In addition to numerous new and upgraded packages, this release has the following highlights: The default kernel package has been updated from 6.1 to 6.6. All supported kernels remain available. For each supporting version of the Linux kernel, firmware blobs are compressed with zstd. For firmware blobs this means an increase of 4.4% in size, however a significantly higher decompression speed. NixOS now installs a stub ELF loader that prints an informative error message when users attempt to run binaries not made for NixOS." NixOS is an independent distribution based around the Nix package andsystem manager. The project's latest release is NixOS 23.11 which upgrades the LLVM build software and introduces GNOME 45, along with several other package upgrades and new modules. "In addition to packages the NixOS distribution also features modules and tests that make it what it is. This release brought 113 new modules and removed 18. In that process we added 1565 options and removed 362. GNOME 45 - GNOME has been updated to version 45 "Rīga", which introduces a new image viewer, a new camera app, and more changes. Default LLVM version - The default version for the LLVM package set has been updated to 16 (from 11) on both Linux and Darwin, which introduced lots of new features and improvements. The project's latest version, NixOS 23.05, mostly provides updates desktop enviroments and a newer Linux kernel. "In addition to numerous new and upgraded packages, this release has the following highlights: Core version changes: default linux: 5.15 -> 6.1, all supported kernels available. systemd has been updated to v253.1, see the pull request for more info. It’s recommended to use nixos-rebuild boot and reboot, rather than nixos-rebuild switch - since in some rare cases the switch of a live system might fail. glibc: 2.35 -> 2.37. Cinnamon has been updated to 5.6, see the pull request for what is changed. GNOME has been upgraded to version 44. Please see the release notes for details. KDE Plasma has been updated to v5.27, see the release notes for what is changed. Python implements PEP 668, providing better feedback to users that try to run pip install system-wide. nixos-rebuild now supports an extra --specialisation option that can be used to change specialisation for switch and test commands. libxcrypt, the library providing the crypt(3) password hashing function, is now built without support for algorithms not flagged strong. This affects the availability of password hashing algorithms used for system login (login(1), passwd(1)), but also Apache2 Basic-Auth, Samba, OpenLDAP, Dovecot, and many other packages." NixOS is an independently developed GNU/Linux distribution that uses the advanced Nix package manager for software management and system configuration. The project's latest release is NixOS 22.11 "Raccoon". One of the key changes in this version is an adjustment in how account passwords are handled. The release announcement shares some details: "During the NixOS 22.11 lifecycle old password hashes may need to be updated, because we plan to disable weak password hashes in NixOS 23.05. We consider password hashing methods weak, if the libxcrypt project did not flag them strong. If your system is configured with weak hashes a script will emit a warning during activation. We expect most users accounts to be set up with sha512crypt (hash prefixed with $6$) which we will continue to support. Interactively configured passwords can be updated using passwd, new password hashes can be generated through mkpasswd." The NixOS team have announced the launch of NixOS 22.05, the latest version of their distribution which is built around the advanced Nix package manager. "A highlight of the release is Nix 2.8, which brings experimental flakes support for the default installed Nix version, along with tonnes of fixes, features and general improvements. Of course, these are just two things I want to highlight here. Not to mention the countless improvements, bug fixes and new features that have also gone into this release. I would like to thank every single contributor who has contributed to this release. Every NixOS release is an improvement over the previous one and I am already looking forward to the improvements of 22.11. Please remember that the new release also means that 21.11 channel is now obsolete and will only be updated for an another month." Nix has not been updated to version 2.4 due to regressions in non-experimental behavior. To upgrade to 2.4, use the nixos-unstable branch or set the nix.package option to either of nixFlakes or nix_2_4 packages. The nixUnstable attribute is a pre-release of Nix 2.5.
