Rubix Linux
Rubix was a Linux distribution forked from Slackware Linux. It differs from its parent in that Rubix uses Arch Linux's 'pacman' for simplified package management with dependency resolution and it has a completely revamped init system, maintaining the BSD style, but adding modularity.

Andreas Wacknitz has announced the release of OpenIndiana 2020.10, the latest version of the project's community effort to keep alive the OpenSolaris distribution and its many popular technologies, such as ZFS, DTrace or Zones. This version updates the MATE desktop environment to version 1.24: "After almost 6 months of development, we have released the new OpenIndiana 'Hipster' snapshot 2020.10 right on time on October 31st, 2020. Some of the noticeable changes are: after BHyVe has been upstreamed into illumos-gate, we automatically got it and we were able to supply this with a bhyve branded zone for OpenIndiana; FreeRDP and Remmina have been added; the Squeak Virtual Machine (v4, v5 and v5 Cog) have been added and so it's possible to run older and newer versions of Squeak Smalltalk and also Cuis Smalltalk on OpenIndiana; MATE, our main desktop environment, has been updated to 1.24; GCC 10 has been added; a buch of other packages have also been updated." See the release announcement and the release notes for further information. Download (pkglist): OI-hipster-gui-20201031.iso (1,598MB, SHA256), OI-hipster-minimal-20201031.iso (345MB, SHA256). |

About OpenIndiana
|
OpenIndiana is a continuation of the OpenSolaris operating system. It was conceived during the period of uncertainty following the Oracle takeover of Sun Microsystems, after several months passed with no binary updates made available to the public. The formation proved timely, as Oracle discontinued OpenSolaris soon after in favour of Solaris 11 Express, a binary distribution with a more closed development model to début later this year. OpenIndiana is part of the illumos Foundation, and provides a true open-source community alternative to Solaris 11 and Solaris 11 Express, with an open development model and full community participation.

OS Release: OpenIndiana 2022.10 |
|
OpenIndiana is a continuation of the OpenSolaris operating system. The project's latest version is OpenIndiana 2022.10. The new release features a number of package changes, including upgrades to Perl and Python. The release announcement reads: "We have merged more than 2500 PR’s with fixes, updates and new packages since our last release roughly one year ago. Some notable highlights are: Initial support to mount install media via NFS has been added. A fix to use NFSv3 instead NFSv4 is underway. We have updated the NVIDIA drivers to the latest production branch version and updated older versions. LibreOffice has been updated to 7.2.7 and is now a 64 bit application. Firefox and Thunderbird have been updated to the latest ESR releases. MATE desktop has been updated to the latest 1.26 version. We have removed our old Perl versions and replaced them with 5.34 and 5.36 which are 64-bit only. Version 5.36 is now our default. Our Python versions are undergoing a similar process which is not yet finished. We began to remove versions 2.7 and 3.5 and are updating (or removing if an update is not possible or the package is superfluous). IPS has been updated already to use Python 3.9 which increased its speed slitghtly. We have updated gcc-10 to its latest version and added gcc-11. We also added clang-13 and removed older versions." OS Release: OpenIndiana 2021.04 |
|
OpenIndiana is a continuation of the OpenSolaris operating system. The project's latest release is 2021.04 which includes updates for key desktop applications, development tools, and hardware drivers. "We have updated firefox and Thunderbird to newer ESR versions (78.10.0 resp. 78.9.1). This was overdue and has been requested by many users. Finally we have more than one NVIDIA driver version available with nvidia-390.141 being the default. Changing the driver to another version is documented. At the moment we have the following versions in our repository: nvidia-460.67, nvidia-390.141, nvidia-340.108. Our gcc-7, gcc-8, gcc-9, and gcc-10 compilers have been patched to use the illumos libc SSP implementation for -fstack-protector. We have added openssl-1.1.1 and many packages have been updated to make use of the newer and supported version of openssl. Alas this process isn't finished yet as many packages don't use it out-of-the box and a few even don't work with its new interface. Work has been started to update our Python versions and the related packages. As a consequence we now have python-37 and python-39 packages. This is also an ongoing process that hasn't been finished yet." Further information is provided in the release announcement.
