Devuan GNU+Linux is a Linux distribution forked from Debian in 2015. The project's primary goal is to provide a variant of Debian without the complexities and dependencies of systemd. The latest version of Devuan includes options for running the SysV, runit, and OpenRC init software implementations. "What's new in Chimaera 4.0? Based on Debian Bullseye (11.1) with Linux kernel 5.10. Your choice of init: sysvinit, runit, and OpenRC. Improved desktop support - virtually all desktop environments available in Debian are now part of Devuan, systemd-free. New boot, display manager and desktop theming. Enhanced accessibility: installation via GUI or console can now be accomplished via software or hardware speech synthesis, or using a refreshable braille display, and Devuan Chimaera has the ability to install desktop environments without PulseAudio, allowing speech synthesis in both console and GUI sessions at the same time." Further information on the new release can be found in the project's release announcement. About Devuan
Devuan GNU+Linux is a Linux distribution forked from Debian in 2015. The project's primary goal is to provide a variant of Debian without the complexities and dependencies of systemd, an init system and services manager originally developed by Red Hat and later adopted by most other Linux distributions. Devuan's initial beta release was made available in April 2016, together with an upgrade path from Debian 7.0 "Wheezy" and a possibility to switch to Devuan from Debian 8.0 "Jessie". The distribution adopted Xfce as its default desktop.

Distribution Release: Devuan GNU+Linux 5.0.0 |
Devuan GNU+Linux is a Linux distribution forked from Debian in 2015. The project's primary goal is to provide a variant of Debian without the complexities and dependencies of systemd. The project's latest release is Devuan 5.0.0 "Daedalus". The release notes share highlights of the new version. "xserver-xorg-core now uses libseat1 to control rootless startx and access to input and video devices - this has several advantages, the most significant being that it removes the dbus dependency from xserver-xorg-core; libseat1 can use either seatd or elogind as a backend; if you need to override the default choice (autodiscovery), use the LIBSEAT_BACKEND environment variable; if you are using seatd as the backend, ensure the user is a member of the video group - this is only relevant to running startx as a user, X.Org run as root by a display manager is unaffected; users can now enjoy a Wayland desktop without elogind by installing libpam-ck-connector, sway and seatd; ensure the relevant user is a member of the 'video' group and run Sway from the terminal." The Devuan project, which rebuilds the Debian distribution after removing systemd and all related components from it, has announced the availability of the first beta snapshot of Devuan GNU+Linux 3.0.0, code name "Beowulf": "The Devuan 3 'Beowulf' beta release is now ready for review. What's new in 'Beowulf'? Changes in su - the behavior of su has changed, Use 'su -' to get root's path or use the full path to commands if you use only 'su'; PulseAudio - if you have no sound, make sure the following line in /etc/pulse/client.conf.d/00-disable-autospawn.conf is commented as #autospawn=no; note that Firefox ESR no longer requires PulseAudio, so you can easily remove PulseAudio and just use ALSA.
