2022-11-19 NEWDevelopment Release: Mageia 9 Alpha 1
Filip Komar has announced the launch of a development release of Mageia. The new snapshot, Mageia 9 Alpha, is available in several editions and includes an option to remove old kernels once they are no longer needed. "The available ISO images are the same as in Mageia 8, offering installation media for both 32- and 64-bit systems, 64bit live images for Plasma, GNOME and Xfce, as well as a 32-bit live image for Xfce. The Control Centre now adds a new feature that will allow the removal of old kernels. This feature will be automated by default in Mageia 9, but will also allow the user to configure and run it manually. There are also improvements in boot times with the Plasma update to 5.25 and systemd. And as always there are many package updates. So please update during or at least soon after install." The release announcement offers further details and a list of key package versions. Download (pkglist): Mageia-9-alpha1-x86_64.iso (4,423MB, SHA512, torrent), Mageia-9-alpha1-Live-Plasma-x86_64.iso (3,999MB, SHA512, torrent), Mageia-Cauldron-netinstall-nonfree-x86_64.iso (106MB, SHA512).

2026-01-10 Development Release: Mageia 10 Alpha
The Mageia team has announced an alpha development snapshot of the upcoming Mageia 10 release. The final release is expected in April 2026. "Alpha ISO images are the first public snapshots of the upcoming release. They are not ready for production use, but they are perfect for developers, testers, and curious users who want to explore what’s cooking in Mageia 10 and help improve it by reporting bugs, testing installs, and confirming hardware compatibility. These ISO images represent the initial build of Mageia 10 as the distribution begins its formal release countdown, ahead of beta and release candidate milestones, and a final release currently targeted for April 2026. The Mageia 10 alpha set includes a comprehensive collection of installation formats - classical installation ISOs for traditional installs on 32-bit (i686) and 64-bit systems; live Desktop images featuring popular desktops such as Plasma, GNOME and Xfce." Additional information is available in the release announcement. 2023-08-27 Distribution Release: Mageia 9
Mageia is a general purpose, independent desktop distribution from the Mandriva family of projects. The project's latest release is version 9 which includes improves to the installer, package management, and minimal install size of the distribution. "Smaller disk footprint - the size of the minimal install (when disabling the recommended packages) has been reduced, it's the smallest since Mageia 4; the RPM database has switched to SQLite - the RPM database no longer uses the old and unmaintained Berkeley DB, it now uses the modern SQLite, conversion is performed during upgrade from Mageia 8; NFS support is done using system tools rather than our 15 years old forked NFS code, thus gaining support for NFSv4 and co; when using an HTTP server, it's now possible to specify a port different than the default 80; the stage1 images are compressed with zstd instead of gzip; lots of bug fixes and improvements in the partitioner; add 'downloader=curl' in order to switch from wget to curl for downloading packages; the rescue system has been enhanced; live ISO image - the NetworkManager system service is now enabled by default on the Plasma live ISO image (this was already done for the GNOME and Xfce live ISO iimages in previous releases) - this allows network connections to be managed via the Plasma system settings tool as well as by the traditional Mageia network management tools." Additional details can be found in the release notes. Download (pkglist): Mageia-9-x86_64.iso (4,311MB, SHA512, signature, torrent), Mageia-9-Live-Plasma-x86_64.iso (3,864MB, SHA512, signature, torrent), Mageia-9-netinstall-nonfree-x86_64.iso (122MB, SHA512).

2021-02-26 Distribution Release: Mageia 8
Mageia is a community fork of the now-discontinued Mandriva distribution. The Mageia distribution provides a general purpose operating system with a focus on easy to use, pre-configured desktop environments. The project's latest release is Mageia 8 which improves boot time performance, mostly removes dependencies on Python 2, and package management information is now compressed using Zstd to make updating parsing package data faster. "Faster package metadata parsing Urpmi metadata are compressed with Zstd instead of xz, resulting in faster parsing. Python 2 is mostly dead Most python2 modules and software were removed. The ARM (Advanced RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computing) Machine) port rebooted during Mageia 7 days has been enhanced. The core is available for ARMv7 and AArch64. There is no traditional installer for now, and it is still considered experimental, but most of the distribution was built successfully on both architectures (see our ARM status overview for details). The plan is to provide installation images for popular ARM devices in the coming months. There is no ETA for those as of Mageia 8's release. Drakboot is now somewhat able to set up UEFI on AArch64." Additional information can be found in the distribution's release notes. Download (pkglist): Mageia-8-x86_64.iso (4,290MB, SHA512, signature, torrent), Mageia-8-Live-GNOME-x86_64.iso (3,053MB, SHA512, signature, torrent), Mageia-8-Live-Plasma-x86_64.iso (3,433MB, SHA512, signature, torrent), Mageia-8-Live-Xfce-x86_64.iso (2,806MB, SHA512, signature, torrent).
2021-02-06 Development Release: Mageia 8 RC
The Mageia team have announced a release candidate for Mageia 8. The development snapshot includes several package upgrades, including a move to the latest version of PHP and the latest long-term support release of the kernel. There have also been a number of video driver updates. "PHP was recently updated to 8.0.2, therefore, feedback on PHP applications will be helpful to check for issues. The NVIDIA drivers have been switched to gl-vendor-neutral-dispatch, so MESA applications can work on such systems, with 460 series on x86_64 and 390 series still available. Note that the NVIDIA 340 series is no longer supported. DrakX, our installer, will switch supported systems to NVIDIA 390 where possible, or use the nouveau driver if they are unsupported by the newer drivers. For AMD graphic cards based on Southern Islands family (Tahiti, Pitcairn, Oland, Verde, Hainan) and Sea Islands family (Kaveri, Bonaire, Hawaii, Kabini, Mullins) we are now defaulting to the newer amdgpudriver instead of the older Radeon, and feedback, if it works properly or not on your hardware, would be helpful." Further details are available in the release announcement. Download (pkglist): Mageia-8-rc-x86_64.iso (4,288MB, SHA512, signature, torrent), Mageia-8-rc-Live-Plasma-x86_64.iso (3,433MB, SHA512, signature, torrent, Mageia-8-netinstall-nonfree-x86_64.iso (120MB, SHA512).
2020-12-13 Development Release: Mageia 8 Beta 2
Yves Brungard has announced that the second beta build of the upcoming Mageia 8 release is ready for testing: "We are happy to announce the release of Mageia 8 beta 2. After a long time since beta 1, we look forward to hearing your feedback and thoughts so that we can continue to get Mageia 8 ready for release. As we said in a previous post, a lot of work had to be done for the base system upgrade, Java, Linux kernel and the graphical stack. These upgrades are now in a state that allows for the beta 2 ISO images to be built and tested. Here are some of the major packages included in this release: Linux kernel 5.9.12 (5.10 will land in shortly), glibc 2.32, GCC 10.2.1, rpm 4.16.1, Chromium 87, Firefox 78.5, LibreOffice 7.0.4, Plasma Desktop 5.20.4, GNOME 3.38.1, Cinnamon 4.8.2, Xfce 4.15.2, MATE 1.24. PHP is provided in release 8.0." Read the rest of the release announcement for further details. As always, Mageia releases are available as installation or live images (with GNOME, KDE Plasma or Xfce); download links: Mageia-8-beta2-x86_64.iso (4,363MB, SHA512, signature, torrent, pkglist), Mageia-8-beta2-Live-Plasma-x86_64.iso (3,457MB, SHA512, signature, torrent), Mageia-8-beta2-Live-GNOME-x86_64.iso (3,074MB, SHA512, signature, torrent), Mageia-8-beta2-Live-Xfce-x86_64.iso (2,813MB, SHA512, signature, torrent).

Lunar Linux

Lunar is a source based Linux distribution with a unique package management system which builds each software package, or module, for the machine it is being installed on. Though it can take a while to do a complete Lunar installation it's worth it as it tends to be quite fast, once installed! In the beginning Lunar was a fork of Sorcerer GNU Linux (SGL). The fork occurred in late January to early February of 2002 and was originally made up of a small group of people who wanted to collaboratively develop and extend the Sorcerer technology. The original name for the project was Lunar-Penguin but the group decided to re-christen it Lunar Linux while the Lunar-Penguin name has become a sort of umbrella which the team could use if they decide to collaboratively develop something besides Lunar Linux.
