ZevenOS
ZevenOS was an Ubuntu-based GNU/Linux distribution with focus on providing a fast and easy-to-use system with BeOS-like user interface and support for older hardware. The distribution was built on top of a recent Linux kernel and includes a large number of popular open-source software applications for office use, multimedia playback and software development. ZevenOS also ships with MAGI, a tool for starting applications and managing the system. The project's "Neptune" edition was a separate built based on Debian GNU/Linux and featuring the latest KDE desktop.

The Linux Mint team have announced the release of Linux Mint 21.1 "Vera". The new release makes handling Flatpak packages smoother, integrating Flatpak support into the update manager and making it easier to work with both traditional deb packages and Flatpaks in the software centre. "Flatpak support was added to the Update Manager. Flatpak applications and runtimes can be updated like any other supported types of software. The Software Manager features a refreshed user interface which makes it easier to distinguish between Flatpaks and system packages. When looking at an application which is available both as a system package and a Flatpak, you can switch back and forth between its two versions. New Flatpaks from Flathub are automatically added to the Software Manager on a daily basis." | Linux Mint is an Ubuntu-based distribution whose goal is to provide a classic desktop experience with many convenient, custom tools and optional out-of-the-box multimedia support. It also adds a custom desktop and menus, several unique configuration tools, and a web-based package installation interface. Linux Mint is compatible with Ubuntu software repositories. Besides its Ubuntu-based flavour, the project also produces a separate "Debian" edition (called LMDE), based on the latest stable Debian version.

The Linux Mint team have announced the launch of Linux Mint 22. The new version will be supported through to 2029 and focused primarily on updating language and hardware support: "Linux Mint 22 ships with modern components and the new Ubuntu 24.04 package base. To guarantee better compatibility with modern hardware, the kernel is version 6.8 and Linux Mint 22.x point releases will follow the HWE series. The default sound server switched to PipeWire. The Software Sources received support for the new Debian DEB822 format. Themes were updated to support GTK4. JXL support was added to Pix and a new thumbnailer was implemented for it. All software using libsoup2 was migrated to libsoup3. HiDPI support improvements were made in the boot sequence, in Plymouth and Slick-Greeter. An updated package base doesn't just bring new technology, it can sometimes also threaten existing features. Thunderbird continues to be available in Linux Mint 22 as a native .deb package. Following the decision by Ubuntu to move it to Snap, Linux Mint is now responsible for packaging it. With GNOME 46, libgoa/libgoa-backend 3.50 moved to GTK4 and could no longer be used by GTK3 applications. This meant that Online Accounts support had to disappear from Cinnamon, Budgie and Unity. The XApp project implemented a standalone application called 'GNOME Online Accounts GTK'. Not only did this bring the feature back in these three desktop environments, it also made it possible for it to be used in MATE and Xfce." Development Release: Linux Mint 22 Beta |

The Linux Mint project has published a new beta release for the upcoming launch of Linux Mint 22. The beta snapshot includes several adjustments and a few new programs, including some which replace discontinued GNOME features or support. "An updated package base doesn't just bring new technology, it can sometimes also threaten existing features. Thunderbird continues to be available in Linux Mint 22 as a native .deb package. Following the decision by Ubuntu to move it to Snap, Linux Mint is now responsible for packaging it. With GNOME 46, libgoa/libgoa-backend 3.50 moved to GTK4 and could no longer be used by GTK3 applications. This meant that Online Accounts support had to disappear from Cinnamon, Budgie and Unity. The XApp project implemented a standalone application called ;GNOME Online Accounts GTK'. Not only did this bring the feature back in these three desktop environments, it also made it possible for it to be used in MATE and Xfce. In Ubuntu 24.04, a number of GNOME applications moved to libAdwaita and stopped supporting the system theme. The Linux Mint team have published a new version of their Ubuntu-based distribution: Linux Mint 21.3. The new point release includes several new features, including a new type of Cinnamon add-on (or "spice") which adds actions to the file manager. This release also includes support for Secure Boot and introduces experimental support for Wayland sessions in Cinnamon. "Cinnamon add-ons are called 'spices'. Until now Cinnamon supported 4 types of spices: Applets: Little programs which can be placed in your panel(s); Desklets: Same thing, but on your desktop; Extensions: Scripts which can alter the way Cinnamon works; Themes: Look and feel for your Cinnamon desktop. Cinnamon 6.0 features a new type of spices: Actions. Actions, formerly known as 'Nemo actions', are add-ons for your file manager's context menu. Right-click an .iso file and look at the context menu. The 'Make bootable USB stick' and 'Verify' menu items are Nemo actions, provided by the mintstick package. In Cinnamon 6.0, actions are now a type of spice. You can download, enable and rate them like any other spices: applets, desklets, extensions and Cinnamon themes." The Linux Mint team have announced the release of a new development snapshot, Linux Mint 21.3 Beta. The new beta release introduces some changes to the way the distribution boots, in particular offering support for Secure Boot. "Linux Mint 21.3 is a long term support release which will be supported until 2027. It comes with updated software and brings refinements and many new features to make your desktop experience more comfortable. Linux Mint 21.3 comes with full support for SecureBoot and compatibility with a wider variety of BIOS and EFI implementations. GRUB is used in EFI mode. Isolinux/syslinux is used in BIOS mode. The tools and framework used by Linux Mint to produce its ISO images were updated and are now based on the latest version of live-build. The Linux Mint team have announced the launch of a new version of the project's Debian-based branch. The new version 6 (codename "Faye") of Linux Mint Debian Edition offers most of the same technology as Linux Mint's main, Ubuntu-based branch, but using Debian "Stable" as the core operating system. "LMDE is a Linux Mint project which stands for 'Linux Mint Debian Edition'. Its goal is to ensure Linux Mint would be able to continue to deliver the same user experience, and how much work would be involved, if Ubuntu was ever to disappear. LMDE is also one of our development targets, to guarantee the software we develop is compatible outside of Ubuntu. LMDE aims to be as similar as possible to Linux Mint, but without using Ubuntu. The package base is provided by Debian instead. Known issues: to install LMDE on an existing LVM partition you must first remove it from the LVM volumes and groups to which it belongs; in manual partitioning mode, note that the installer will auto-mount all swap partitions, these partitions will also be placed in /etc/fstab in the installed system." The Linux Mint team maintains two key branches of its distribution. Mint's main edition is based on Ubuntu while a second branch, Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE), is based on Debian 'Stable'. The Linux Mint team has published a new development snapshot of LMDE. "LMDE is a Linux Mint project which stands for 'Linux Mint Debian Edition'. Its goal is to ensure Linux Mint would be able to continue to deliver the same user experience, and how much work would be involved, if Ubuntu was ever to disappear. LMDE is also one of our development targets, to guarantee the software we develop is compatible outside of Ubuntu. LMDE aims to be as similar as possible to Linux Mint, but without using Ubuntu. The package base is provided by Debian instead. Tips: in the live session, the username is 'mint' and the password is empty (i.e. just press Enter if asked for a password); if your screen resolution is too low, some windows might not fit in the screen; while pressing the ALT key, you can grab any part of a window with the mouse and move it across the screen; to guarantee compatibility with non-PAE processors, the 32-bit versions of Linux Mint Debian come with a 686 non-PAE kernel by default." The new release includes a number of improvements to the login screen, Flatpak packages can now be included as Featured items in the software centre, and the layout of the Pix application has been overhauled. "Slick Greeter, which is in charge of the login screen, was given support for multiple keyboard layouts. The indicator located on the top-right corner of the screen opens a menu which lets you switch between layouts. System layouts defined in /etc/default/keyboard are listed first for easy access. Below that a sub-menu lists all supported layouts. Touchpad support was also improved. Tap-to-click is detected and enabled automatically in the login screen. A revealer icon appears when the password is clicked or edited. This revealer can be used to toggle the visibility of the password." The new version swaps out the old Blueberry Bluetooth software in favour of Blueman, improvements have been made to the Sticky Notes application to make it easier to identify different notes, and there is a new process monitor which will indicate to the user when automated tasks are consuming system resources. Clement Lefebvre has announced the release of a brand-new version of Linux Mint's Debian edition, better known as LMDE. The new release is based on Debian 11 and uses the Cinnamon desktop: "The team is proud to announce the release of LMDE 5 'Elsie'." The release announcement contains a brief introduction to LMDE, while the release notes provide a list of known issues: "To launch the installer in expert mode, run the following command: sudo live-installer-expert-mode. To install LMDE on an existing LVM partition you must first remove it from the LVM volumes and groups to which it belongs. In manual partitioning mode, note that the installer will auto-mount all swap partitions. These partitions will also be placed in /etc/fstab in the installed system. The new version, based on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, brings various improvements to Update Manager and Notification Centre, as well as new applications, such as Bulk File Renamer and Sticky Notes: "The Update Manager now supports Cinnamon spice updates (i.e. updates for applets, desklets, themes and extensions). Although they're technically different than APT updates, they are presented to you in a very similar manner. The Linux Mint team has announced the availability of a new development snapshot, Linux Mint 20.2 Beta. The new beta offers a number of new changes, including the ability to update Cinnamon Spice (desktop extension) updates through the update manager. This release also keeps track of how long new security updates have been waiting and can notify the user if their system is becoming out of date. "In the past, available updates were simply indicated by a little orange dot on the Update Manager's icon in the system tray and could go unnoticed for long periods of time. In Linux Mint 20.2 the Update Manager is now able to remember how long each update has been available for, how many days the computer was ON during that time and assess whether or not a notification would be welcome to remind you of available updates. This new notification feature was designed to add comfort to the user experience, not remove any, so making sure it was a nice addition and not an annoying distraction was key. The way this is handled in other operating systems such as Windows or Mac for instance was an example Linux Mint did not want to follow." The Linux Mint team has announced the release of Linux Mint 20.1, a long-term support release which will continue to receive updates until 2025. The project's newest version features a new web apps manager which will assist users in setting up websites to act more like native applications. The project is also including the Hypnotix IPTV application and the ability to mark files as favourites for quick access. "Time and time again we need to access the same files. Up until Linux Mint 20.1 we would remember where they were stored and slowly get to them using the file manager, bookmark their containing folder to get to them faster, look in the recently opened document section, hoping to find them in there, clutter our desktop with direct links... Well, there's a much better way now! If you're working on a file and you know you access it often, right-click it and select 'Add to Favorites'. You'll see a little star pop up in your panel. That's where all favorite files are, just one click away. You'll also find them in your application menu." Linux Mint 20 offers support for different scaling on HiDPI displays, includes a new tool called Warpinator for sharing files on the local area network, and the welcome window provides quick access to changing the desktop colour theme. "The star of the show in Linux Mint 20 is a new application called Warpinator. 10 years ago, Linux Mint 6 featured a tool called "Giver" which could share files across the local network. Without any server or configuration, computers would automatically see each others and you could simply drag and drop files from one to another. The Linux Mint team has announced the availability of a new beta version of Linux Mint Debian Edition, a platform which provides Mint-specific packages and technology while using the Debian distribution as its foundation. "This is the beta release for LMDE 4 'Debbie'. LMDE is a Linux Mint project which stands for 'Linux Mint Debian Edition'. In addition, Cinnamon desktop resource usage has been improved: "Although the amount of RAM consumed by Cinnamon largely depends on the video driver, Cinnamon uses significantly less RAM than before. On a test VirtualBox virtual machine, Cinnamon 4.2 uses approximately 67MB RAM (compared to 95MB RAM for Cinnamon 4.0). Many optimizations were done in the Muffin window manager. These changes aim to reduce input lag and make windows feel smoother and lighter. The ability to switch VSYNC on or off no longer requires restarting Cinnamon. In an effort to reduce bandwidth for their mirrors, Debian decided to move debug symbols outside of the main repositories. The Linux Mint team has released two new editions of the project's Ubuntu-based series. The project's new offerings include editions for the KDE and Xfce desktop environments. Both new releases are part of the project's larger 18.3 release which already features Cinnamon and MATE editions. Along with support for Flatpak packages and a new snapshot tool called Timeshift, Linux Mint ships with a tool called System Reports which can gather key information to help trouble-shoot problems. "When a crash occurs, information is now gathered and a crash report is generated. The System Reports tool lists the crashes and is able to generate stack traces for them. When developers aren't able to reproduce a bug, that information is very useful. It's always been very difficult for non-experienced users to produce core dumps or stack traces. The Linux Mint team has announced the availability of two new editions of Linux Mint 18.1. The two new editions, KDE and Xfce, feature Mint's X-Apps, desktop applications which are designed to look and act the same across multiple desktop environments. The update manager has been updated to make kernel updates more visible and installing additional language support has been improved: "The Language Settings checks are more exhaustive than before. In previous versions, full support for a particular language included its language packs and localized versions of popular applications such as Thunderbird and Firefox. This now includes a lot more packages such as dictionaries, help packages, fonts, and optional components which depend on the list of applications you installed." The Linux Mint team has announced the release of an update to the project's 18.x branch. The new version, Linux Mint 18.1, is available in two editions (Cinnamon and MATE), in 32-bit and 64-bit builds. The new release offers Cinnamon users a new screensaver that displays more information and provides media controls even when the screen is locked. On computers which feature accelerometers, the Cinnamon desktop can now rotate when the device's orientation changes. Both editions offer upgrades to the X-apps programs with the Xplayer media player now offering the ability to blank screens not being used to display video. Also, the update manager can display a list of available kernel versions with recommendations. "The screensaver in Cinnamon 3.2 was redesigned and rewritten from scratch in Python. The Linux Mint team has announced the availability of a new development snapshot. The new version, Linux Mint 18.1 beta, features a new screen saver which allows the user to control the media player while the screen is locked, giving users the ability to control music playback without unlocking their computer. In the Cinnamon edition of Linux Mint it is possible to enable sounds to accompany on-screen notifications and the Xplayer video player can now blank monitors not in use by the player window. "If you have more than one monitor, you can now press the 'Blank Other Monitors' button when playing a video in full screen. Your video will continue to play and all your other monitors will turn black. The blanking can be toggled back and forth and automatically stops if you leave full screen or close the player. This feature is also available if you plug an external monitor to a laptop, so it allows you to blank the external monitor, or to blank the laptop itself without having to close the lid." The Update Manager attempts to locate fast mirrors to improve download times and multi-monitor support has been improved for the MATE desktop. The release candidate is available in two flavours, Cinnamon and MATE, and is offered for 32-bit and 64-bit x86 machines. The release notes have further information on architecture support: "To guarantee compatibility with non-PAE processors, the 32-bit versions of Linux Mint Debian come with a 586 kernel by default. This kernel does not support SMP, and as a consequence is only able to detect one core and one CPU. If your CPU has multiple cores, or if you have more than one CPU, simply install the 686-PAE kernel and reboot your computer. Sometimes the MATE session fails to theme itself properly and shows up with ugly looking panels and icons. This is due to a race condition with MDM and it usually only happens in live mode. The system is stable but some work is ongoing in 'mintinstall', 'mintmenu' and in the artwork. For this reason this is not considered a release candidate. After two beta releases, the KDE edition of Linux Mint 2.2, code name "Bianca", has reached a stable state: "Bianca KDE edition was released and is available for download. A miniKDE edition is also available, it features less software but fits on a CD. As usual this release is desktop-ready and comes with support for most video codecs and web plugins. Mint applications couldn't be ported in time to KDE and are absent from this release, however mintdesktop's home folders were added to it. The default selection of packages is large and very up to date: KDE 3.5.6, Amarok 1.4.5, KOffice 1.6.2, Firefox 2.0.0.3. Konqueror is still the default file explorer but Dolphin 0.8 was also added as a tech-preview. The KMenu was replaced with TastyMenu 0.7." Here are the full release notes. We received a lot of feedback on BETA 020 and made important modifications in this release: Dolphin was updated to 0.8 and now features a sidebar; the default KDE style was changed from Polyester to Domino; the default theme was changed from zen-green to bianca-green; Tasty Menu was updated to 0.7.1 (configurable logo and text); Krusader and KFTPGrabber are now installed by default; the panel was rearranged (we received negative feedback on the RSS panel); System Settings was replaced with KControl; an important bug on KDE-Guidance was fixed."
