WOMP!
WOMP! was a micro Linux distribution focused on multimedia. It takes only 13 to 30MB depending on the selected options on a bootable CD, and allows playing a wide range of multimedia files (video/audio/image) without installing any software on the computer's hard drive. Additionally, WOMP! can also be installed on the hard drive - either to run in memory just like a bootable CD, or to run from a read-only loopback file which was interesting for machines with low memory. It can then be booted either by a floppy boot disk or by a bootable CD. WOMP! uses FrameBuffer for playing videos and X for interacting with the user. Hardware acceleration was provided by vidix. Cards that support vidix include nearly all ATI and Matrox cards, and more recent NVIDIA cards.

Patrick Schleizer has announced the release of Whonix 17, a major update of the project's Debian-based distribution designed for advanced security and privacy via its fail-safe, automatic and desktop-wide use of the Tor network. Whonix uses a heavily reconfigured Debian base inside multiple virtual machines, thus providing a substantial layer of protection from malware and IP address leaks. It is designed to be run inside a virtual machine. This is the distribution's first stable release based on Debian 12: "Whonix 17 has been released. Major changes: port to Debian 12 'Bookworm'; update Tor Browser to 12.5.1; use Tor packages from Debian stable instead of Tor Project repository; enable zsh by default for new builds (might get reverted depending on ticket Qubes-Whonix issue 8343; replacing initramfs-tools with Dracut; renamed Qubes templates; renamed 'whonix-gw-16' to 'whonix-gateway-17' and 'whonix-ws-16' to 'whonix-workstation-17'; stop using abbreviations for Whonix templates issue 1778." See the release announcement for further information, upgrade instructions and known issues. Whonix 17 is available in the form of an OVA file that can be imported into VirtualBox; download from here: Whonix-Xfce-17.0.3.0.ova (2,062MB, SHA512, signature, torrent, pkglist). |

About Whonix
|
Whonix is an operating system focused on anonymity, privacy and security. It is based on the Tor anonymity network, Debian GNU/Linux and security by isolation. Whonix consists of two parts: One solely runs Tor and acts as a gateway, which is called Whonix-Gateway. The other, which is called Whonix-Workstation, is on a completely isolated network. Only connections through Tor are possible. With Whonix, you can use applications and run servers anonymously over the Internet. DNS leaks are impossible, and even malware with root privileges cannot find out the user's real IP.

Patrick Schleizer has announced the release of Whonix 16, a major update of the project's Debian-based distribution designed for advanced security and privacy via fail-safe, automatic and desktop-wide use of the Tor network. The new release is based on the recently-released Debian 11: "After approximately two years of development, the Whonix project is proud to announce the release of Whonix 16. Whonix 16 is based on the Debian 'Bullseye' (Debian 11) distribution. This means that users have access to many new software packages in concert with existing packages. In addition, this release will serve as a development foundation for many exciting upcoming security enhancements, such as Hardened Malloc Kicksecure (HMK), Linux Kernel Runtime Guard (LKRG) and other items on the Whonix Security Roadmap. Major changes: switched back from deb.torproject.org tor package to packages.debian.org stable tor package; binaries-freedom package is deprecated; enable Debian fasttrack repository by default...."
