Erich Eickmeyer has announced the release of Edubuntu 24.04, a special edition of Ubuntu with focus on education. The new release brings a new minimal install option and support for the Raspberry Pi 5 boards, among many other improvements: "We are pleased to announce the release of Edubuntu 24.04 LTS, code-named 'Noble Numbat'. This is the first long-term support in ten years and we are excited to have it available to everyone. Our vision is to allow Edubuntu to reach people that otherwise wouldn't be able to afford quality education software. Whether it's to supplement what you already have or to replace completely your education needs, we hope you enjoy it as much as we did working on it. This is a long-term support release and as such, it is supported for 3 years, until April 2027. Features: due to popular demand, we have released images for the Raspberry Pi 5; we have introduced a new metapackage, installable from Edubuntu Installer, for teaching tools; we have developed a metapackage for music education, installable from Edubuntu installer; Edubuntu now includes a minimal install option...." About Edubuntu
Edubuntu is a partner project of Ubuntu, a distribution suitable for classroom use. The aim is that an educator with limited technical knowledge and skill will be able to set up a computer lab, or establish an on-line learning environment, in an hour or less, and then administer that environment without having to become a fully-fledged Linux geek.

Distribution Release: Edubuntu 24.10 |
Erich Eickmeyer has announced the release of Edubuntu 24.10, an Ubuntu variant designed for use in schools and available for standard 64-bit computers as well as Raspberry Pi 5 boards: "Hello fellow educators and students! We've updated Edubuntu with a new wallpaper and added some security features in-line with Ubuntu desktop. We are excited for these small, but mighty changes to help you get the most out of Edubuntu. New Features: we have changed our default wallpaper for this and the next two releases, this will distinguish these releases for this LTS cycle until the next LTS; this release includes GNOME 47; like Ubuntu Desktop, Edubuntu now includes the Permissions Prompting and the Security Center. This release is evolutionary rather than revolutionary. We didn't have much time this cycle to work through our applications and determine which applications are out there to add new ones, so there's not much new in terms of new applications this cycle." Distribution Release: Edubuntu 23.10 |
Edubuntu is an education-focused community edition of Ubuntu. Version 23.10 of the distribution introduces a handful of new default applications to the user experience. "This release is meant to be evolutionary, not revolutionary. We are still working out which applications and features work best in the overall educational ecosystem. As always, feedback is appreciated. New apps: Startup Disk Creator: This will help users and administrators make an easy USB drive from a .iso image of any Ubuntu flavor. GNOME Videos: Video player. GNOME Music: Music player. Backup: Backup utility. Basic256: Teaches students the BASIC programming language (@eeickmeyer, our technical lead, first learned to program in this language when he was 10 years old on a Commodore VIC-20!) Extension Manager: An easy way to add and administer GNOME Shell extensions. OpenBoard: A whiteboard application for teachers. Mnemosyne: A flashcard application. Convertall: A powerful standalone unit converter (Bonus: GNOME Shell can also convert units, just ask it!)" Additional details can be found in the project's release announcement. Distribution Release: Edubuntu 23.04 |
Amy Eickmeyer has announced the availability of Edubuntu 23.04, a brand-new release from the project that seeks to bring the freedom of the Linux desktop and the vast library of open source education software into the classroom. Edubuntu has been revived after a 9-year hiatus. The release announcement, which includes several screenshots, lists some of the more interesting features: "By default, Edubuntu's application overview is alphabetized, which makes it a learning tool out-of-the-box so students can see an example of alphabetization and cataloging. Additionally, educational applications are grouped into folders by subject, making the application overview easy to navigate. Using Edubuntu Installer, you can configure the system for a certain age group, whether that be preschool, primary (elementary), secondary (middle/high school) or tertiary (college/university). Each configuration comes with a different set of applications and a different layout and default wallpaper. Using Edubuntu Menu Administrator, administrators can configure which applications are hidden for non-administrator users with the check of a box." Distribution Release: Edubuntu 12.10 |
Edubuntu 12.10, a special flavour of Ubuntu designed for educational institutions, was also released yesterday as part of the Ubuntu product family: "The Edubuntu development team is proud to announce the release of Edubuntu 12.10. Edubuntu 12.10 is a regular release bringing updated software and a few improvements. For larger deployments and environments where a stable, well tested system is preferred, the Edubuntu development team strongly recommends staying on the long-term support releases (current release is 12.04.1). LTSP users should also remain on Edubuntu 12.04 LTS as 12.10 is lacking Unity support for LTSP and has been reported to be much slower than 12.04. This new release is well suited for home users and users who wish to use the latest versions of the available software." Read the release announcement and release notes for further info.
