The PorteuX developers have announced the release of PorteuX 1.8, the latest version of the project's set of minimalist and portable Linux distribution based on Slackware Linux. This brand-new build updates the Xfce desktop environment to the just-released version 4.20: "This release introduces the long-awaited Xfce 4.20, along with updates to almost all desktop environments. The kernel has been updated to 6.12.5, but there appear to be some upstream performance regressions for AMD users in specific cases, so if you experience some of these issues, you can use the kernel from PorteuX 1.7. Changes: fixed vm.max_map_count not being set during boot; fixed extensions not installing in Cinnamon if 05-devel was not activated; fixed KDE 6 night light feature not working; improved support for Steam Deck; improved PorteuX installer for Linux to only ask for admin rights instead of root user; improved all scripts in /opt/porteux-scripts to only ask for admin rights instead of root user...." Distribution Release: PorteuX 2.5 |
PorteuX is a Linux distribution based on Slackware Linux. The project has published a new version, PorteuX 2.5, which introduces Flatpak support and updates the available desktop editions. "This release brings Flatpak to PorteuX. On the first run, the user should provide a valid path where the Flatpak files will be stored, for example 'sudo flatpak /mnt/sda1' (or 'flatpak --force-setup /mnt/sda1' if re-setup is required). The setup will configure the path and add the Flathub repository. After that, usage follows the standard Flatpak workflow, for example to install Furmark, 'flatpak install flathub com.geeks3d.furmark'. And to run it, 'flatpak run com.geeks3d.furmark'. This release also completely drops the stable spins. PorteuX is now based exclusively on Slackware 'Current'. Fixed Vulkan not working properly (this fixes some Steam games that were not working); fixed cheatcodes that use UUID and LABEL...." The distribution's "cheatcodes" have also been more clearly documented. Further details can be found in the release notes. Distribution Release: PorteuX 2.4 |
The PorteuX development team has release PorteuX 2.4, the latest version of the project's set of lightweight and stripped-down Linux distribution featuring a number of popular desktop environments. This release presents a new desktop option, the COSMIC desktop developed by System 76: "This release brings the COSMIC desktop environment for 'current'. Bear in mind it's still in beta, so expect many issues, including cosmic-osd running at full CPU load (already reported). This is the last PorteuX release that will include a version based on Slackware stable. After much consideration, we decided that this version is just too old and brings no advantage over the current version, which is extensively tested before each PorteuX release. Changes: fixed date/time during boot time; fixed cheatcode from using UUID not having a trailing slash; fixed Cinnamon rendering in Wayland; fixed cropped title bar in Xfce; fixed small title bar icons in Openbox...." Distribution Release: PorteuX 2.2 |
The Slackware-based PorteuX project has published a new release, version 2.2, which introduces several changes to the kernel and includes a fix for Xfce not locking the desktop properly. "In Xfce current there is a potential critical issue when using an NVIDIA card with Mesa drivers 25.1.x and the Xfce compositor (xfwm4) with vsync set to glx (or auto, which usually means glx). Because of this, PorteuX now forces xfwm4's vsync to use xpresent by default. Since kernel 6.12, VirtualBox may not work because the kernel initializes virtualization on KVM module loading by default. To avoid this, PorteuX added kvm.enable_virt_at_load=0 to the APPEND line in boot/syslinux/porteux.cfg. You can revert this by editing the file, and to fix VirtualBox, you need to unload the KVM kernel modules manually with the following command: sudo modprobe -r kvm_amd kvm_intel kvm. The Kernel .config file has been significantly changed, removing support for obsolete hardware and enabling Squashfs multi-threading, which increased memory usage by 100 MB but improved performance. The kernel module is now much larger due to a recent NVIDIA firmware update." Further details are offered in the project's release announcement. Distribution Release: PorteuX 2.1 |
A new stable release of PorteuX, a Slackware-based Linux distribution that means to be fast, small, portable, modular and immutable, is now available. PorteuX 2.1 introduces the brand-new 6.15 Linux kernel and delivers various bug fixes: "PorteuX 2.1. Nothing beats a new release where the system works better and is even smaller. The default NTFS driver has been changed from ntfs-3g to ntfs3 (kernel native). After extensive development, the driver seems stable now. VirtualBox 7.1.8 (latest stable) is not compatible with kernel 6.15. So this release includes a module for VirtualBox 7.2.0 Beta 1. Wayland sessions in VirtualBox are supported but it's recommended to enable 3D Accelaration in Settings, Display. Changelog: fixed a bug where sometimes a module could be incorrectly detected as corrupted; fixed the Linux installer to be language-agnostic...." Distribution Release: PorteuX 2.0 |
PorteuX, a Slackware-based Linux distribution whose main goal is to be super fast, small, portable, modular and immutable, has been updated to version 2.0: "This release introduces the ability to test Wayland sessions in the current/rolling editions of Cinnamon, LXQt and Xfce, in addition to being the default display server in GNOME and KDE since many releases ago. To test Wayland, log out and select the Wayland session from the first icon at the top right of the login screen. Keep in mind that the Wayland implementation in these desktop environments is still experimental. LXQt and Xfce, for instance, are using labwc compositor, which means Wayland won't work in VirtualBox. Changelog: fixed application icons not showing in Openbox session; improved 001-core stripping; improved Clang compatibility in the kernel build script; added CPU instruction detection to the Linux installer to warn users that PorteuX requires SSE4...." Distribution Release: PorteuX 1.7 |
PorteuX is a portable Linux distribution based on Slackware, inspired by Slax and Porteus. The project's latest release, version 1.7, introduces several fixes and updates most of the supported desktop environments. "Many optimizations, fixes and updates have been made, resulting in a very exciting and, hopefully, fast and stable system for everyone. Fixed run-pipewire and gui-cheatcode-loader scripts to avoid running in the background indefinitely. Fixed LXDE error/freezing when dragging a file from Engrampa over the file manager side panel. Fixed Xfce 4.18 'sticky keys' notification issue. Improved kernel config file to remove debug and other optimizations to reduce size without sacrificing performance. Improved GCC/Clang flags to use LTO when it's possible. Improved stripping in GNOME current -- localsearch binaries have been removed due to random full load. Improved rc.6, rc.M, rc.S and rc.services to be simpler and a bit faster. Improved xzm converter scripts to include -o [path] syntax, among some other minor improvements. Improved stripping in all base modules." A complete list of changes can be found in the project's release notes. LinuxBBQ
LinuxBBQ was a multi-purpose operating system based on Debian's "unstable" branch and spiced up with kernels and tools from siduction, Grml and Linux Mint. LinuxBBQ offers different flavours and desktops which are released as "editions" (with no version numbers) and which can be customised and remixed by the user. The individual editions are built to include most major desktop environments (with the exception of GNOME) and there was a special edition offering a choice of no fewer than 53 window managers - everything from aewm to xmonad.
