Lenny Zeltser has announced the release of REMnux 8, a major update of the project's Ubuntu-based Linux distribution featuring a curated collection of free reverse-engineering and malicious software analysis tools: "REMnux 8 is now available. It's a free, open-source Linux toolkit with over 200 tools for analyzing malicious software. You can run it as a virtual machine, a docker container, or install it onto an existing system. I released the first version of REMnux in 2010 to package the utilities I needed for teaching malware analysis and to share the toolkit with the community. Fifteen years and eight major releases later, the toolkit continues to evolve in step with malware trends and analysts' needs. The most notable change in REMnux 8 is the support for AI-assisted malware analysis. The new REMnux MCP server connects AI agents to the distro's tools with practitioner guidance built in. The toolkit's documented tools and predictable interfaces also make it particularly useful to AI agents. The updated documentation includes a new 'Use Artificial Intelligence' tool category that lists OpenCode as a terminal-based AI coding agent, GhidrAssistMCP for AI-assisted reverse engineering in Ghidra, and the r2ai and decai plugins for Radare2." The new version continues to be delivered as an OVA virtual appliance, but is now based on Ubuntu 18.04: "Ten years after the initial release of REMnux, I'm thrilled to announce that REMnux version 7 is now available. This Linux distribution for malware analysis includes hundreds of new and classic tools for examining executables, documents, scripts, and other forms of malicious code. What's new in REMnux 7? Almost everything! All the tools have been refreshed, some have been retired, and many new ones have been added to the distro. REMnux is a lightweight, Ubuntu-based Linux distribution for assisting malware analysts with reverse-engineering malicious software. Designed to be run as a virtual machine appliance, REMnux ships with a number of debugging and software analysis utilities. The latest release of REMnux, version 6, offers users several application updates and improved upgrade tools. "I'm excited to announce the v6 release of the REMnux distro, which helps analysts examine malware using free utilities in a Linux environment. REMnux v6 updates the tools that were present in the earlier revisions of the distro and introduces several new ones. Moreover, it implements major architectural changes behind the scenes to allow REMnux users to easily apply future updates without having to download the full REMnux environment from scratch. The simplest way to get the latest REMnux distribution is to download its virtual appliance OVA file, then import it into your favorite virtualization application such as VMware Workstation and VirtualBox. After starting the imported virtual machine, run the `update-remnux full' command to update its software. For detailed instructions, please see REMnux installation instructions."
