PRO:
incredible fast (both: boot and app launching)
fast on old machines and on external USB
turbo linux on modern hardware
small footprint (has significantly increased with version 5.x, but still moderate 300-350 MB RAM)
highly and detailed configurable
CON:
Moksha ("E") is exotic. Spend hours to customize, localize - but it's really worth it!

Great distro for virtualizing. Needed a minimal linux development box to run on Windows. It takes a while to get familiar with the desktop environment, and finding settings is not intuitive. Once setup, it runs great, and I have had no issues finding or running software.
Would be a 10 if not for the needed googlefu to personalize.

Tried all of the so called light weight distros -- for a 2000 vintage laptop w/ p4 & 750meg ram max. Bodhi 4.5.0 is only one to run and nicely -- beats puppys as well. So nice i use 64 bit Bodhi now on main computer too!

No matter how I tried I couldn't get the installation files to boot from a thumb drive. So I burned them to a DVD. Then they booted but didn't install. They ran a live version for me. It looked really cool but it wouldn't recognize my wireless adapter. So basically crap. A bunch of time wasted.

290 mb ram only! Was capable of using nvidia Optimus with prime select and graphics ppa !
Seriously, i hope this distro never ends, thats the only one that fits my needs at all, in terms of usability, DE and optimization!
Long Live Bodhi Linux! BEST EVER! Enlightenment power + wonderful dev team

When I first looked at this distro, I was thinking "There's no way it can be THAT lightweight with that good of a DE." I gave it a try, though, and swapped LMDE3 out for Bodhi on my old T60 and, to my surprise when running the distro for the first time post-installation, I found that it ran SMOOTHLY! The memory usage was below 90MB, the DE has an insane amount of customization, and it has Ubuntu at its core (big plus for me). The only gripe I have with this distro is its start menu, but that's easily replaceable.

Bodhi Linux is very compact and light-weight OS. So, I could revive several legacy desktops and laptops with Bodhi Linux. Though Enlightenment-17-based desktop environment needs some adaptation periods, it's very simple and convenient environment once you get used to it. Good luck !

Admittedly, Bodhi is very different - Moksha takes some time getting used to and so does the whole Themes-Modules-System. I would not advise this distro to Newbies or people adverse to embracing your console.
But once you get the hang of it, it's really amazing!
Zero bloatware, zero nonsense - exactly what Linux should be, basic and everything is customable. I have been with (L-/K-/X-)ubuntu, Mint, Debian and nothing even compares. Especially on small Netbooks Bodhi is a gift.
Beware: 5.0 has issues with the keyboard installation. If the GUI takes you through the region you're in/timezones but not keyboard determination, you start out with US! Better take that into account when deciding on passwords.

As I try to be a minimalist, bodhilinux is the right distribution for me. Have been using it since version 2.xx.
Pros:
1. No distraction with soft-wares I do not use.
2. OS is not heavy on my hardware.
Cons:
1. No leading in eye-candy.

You either love or hate Bodhi Linux.
Yes, Bodhi is fast. Yes, it's up-to-date, both as a system and installed packages.
The Moksha desktop might be what sets Bodhi Linux apart from the norm, but it's just too different. K.I.S.S (Keep It Simple Stupid) this is not! User friendly, it is not!
I absolutely hate it!

This is an awesome distro. If you like the KISS method this is even better than the Archway. It is simple, lightweight and fast. I can not ask for anything more from a Linux distro. I have used them all, Arch, Antergos, Manjaro, Archlabs, Mint, Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora. All distros should inspire to be like this. Install it you won't regret it unless you don't know what you're doing.

Well, I found it to be a bit too strange. When I read about it, I thought that Moksha is a great idea, but in reality... Just to name few things: it was hard to navigate through the settings, everything seems counterintuitive, settings do not stick - I have to change them every time I boot again, terminal (or Terminology, as they call it) isn't responsive that much... I read a claim about the boot time: in my case, it was as fast as Ubuntu.
So, I really haven't found any reason to use this distro. It's not bad - it works just fine, but it has to be equally good or better than any other distro for me to use it, and it's not.

I truely wish they could simplify this DE into something as simple as MATE but retaining it's underlaying Libs so it would still be blazing fast and cool.
There are milions of old 32 bit PC's out there scared of the immediate future of operating systems which will demand 64 bits, 4 Gb RAM and at least Dual Core chips. Bodhi could fill in that "niche" nicely if it played it's cards well.

this just works and is the best Bodhi so far. Tried the new ubuntu and Gnome and too many issues and tweaking and support needed to learn about stuff needed to make it work. Plus it was slow. Bodhi is fast and clean and a pleasure to use. Moksha is so unique it feels like linux should be. Not a version of windows or maybe mac. not one complaint. i run 3 laptops and use it constantly daily for personal, bussines, farm, and creational facets.

I used the Intel Next Unit of Computing DE3815TYE atom powered computer. It is single core and low powered.
Previously I used Puppy Linux and it ran well. I decided to run Bodhi Linux on this computer and here is what I found.
Boot up time is 30 secs. Shut down time is 8 secs. This distro is very small. During my initial installation, I tried the uefi boot along with the wifi updates. This resulted in the installer crashing.
On the second boot up I used the BIOS mode with no wifi updates. The install was successful.
I installed the applications Firefox, Chromium, VLC, pdf reader, LibreOffice 5.0software using the Bodhi App Center. It was very intuitive and easy to use.
Firefox and Chromium browsers worked fine. I also did the updates on the Bodhi system. That worked fine
and it showed a giant tick of success when it was finished.
Overall I have been very pleased with this legacy Bodhi 4.5 distro. It is speedy and it made my low powered computer run like a powerful desktop.

I've been using Bodhi on an older Acer laptop and it has been everything I hoped it would be. I mainly use this laptop when I travel and use mostly for a browser and email apps. It works great on 2gb of memory and I rarely encounter issues with the OS. I wasn't a big fan of Moksha at first, but it's grown on me and I now find myself wanting that left-click menu when I go back to my daily driver of Ubuntu MATE.
Bodhi is by no means limited to basic tasks, though, because I've installed WINE and my favorite MMORPG (LOTRO) and I can run it just fine on this little underpowered machine. Bodhi even does a better job of running the LOTRO launcher than any other version of Linux I've used. It always loads the launcher on the first try! The game FPS is not great, but that's my machine and not Bodhi and on the whole the gaming is rock solid.
The power management feature works really well, to and that's important when you're traveling.
It has its quirks and Moksha may not be your cup of tea, but give it a shot, it just might grow on you!

I gave this a go on an ancient eeepc 701 with 2Gb RAM, the CPU clocked back up to 900MHz and 16Gb of molasses-slow Phison SSD.
Well, it worked, and seemed reasonably snappy considering the hardware, it is very usable, I'm not a fan of Moshka, but if this was the only PC I had then I could very easily get used to it.
This certainly gives AntiX (my goto 32bit distro for limited hardware) serious competition.
Bodhi would be an excellent distro for e-recyclers to get old corporate rigs back into useful circulation.

The latest experience with Bodhi was a good one. I installed it on a IBM Thinkpad R52 with only 512MB memory in it and it worked pretty well. I'm not a huge fan of the Enlightment desktop, so Moksha wasn't my favorite either. But I've worked with it for a couple of weeks and Moksha and I became a sort of friends.
The pro's and cons? Let's see in what I experienced with Bodhi:
Pros:
- Very light and therefore very suitable for older hardware
- Looks appealing and has lots of eyecandy, while still have a small footprint
- Bodhi is easy to install, even for newbies
- Not too hard to use when you got used to the desktop environment
- Ubuntu compatible, so lots of packages are also available for Bodhi too
Cons:
- If you don't like the dark theme, you can choose for another theme. But the light theme is not as pretty and consistent as the dark theme
- The ISO is 788MB in size. On older computers there's not always an USB-port or a DVD-reader available. And it should, because 788MB doesn't fit on a regular CD-R.
- Midori (the webbrowser) isn't very stable and hangs or crashes sometimes. I got around this problem by installing Mozilla Seamonkey, which worked wonderfully! Seamonkey is also very light and usable on old hardware and has a build-in e-mailcliënt and HTML-editor.
I just ordered a roll of 800MB (90 minutes) CD-R's and try to install Bodhi that way. Let's hope that works. When Bodhi Linux got installed, I send the laptop to India to give it to a poor family, so they can use the laptop. Old, but not wasted! Thanks to (Bodhi) Linux.

I don't like it. I don't like it one bit.
I put it on an old "netbook," figuring that'd be adequate. The O.S. kinda runs okay. Not super slow, or super-fast. The issue: ergonomics. Nothing works the way it should. The way IT SHOULD. The whole notion of ergonomics exists because there are variations in usability between humans and machines. Bodhi's ergonomics are "bad" (on a scale of "good" to "bad"). They've invented new shortcuts. GREAT! I mean, it wasn't like I didn't need yet another set to memorize for productivity to add to my mental collection of MacOS, Linux, & Winders shortcuts. Bodhi couldn't use any of those. Nope, they invented their own.
Plus the interface DOESN'T BEHAVE PROPERLY. Stuff moves that shouldn't, & it moves to a place that doesn't make sense. Things aren't where I expect them to be. Functions are hidden, or obtuse. So visually, tactictly, & functionally, the Bodhi Linux Distribution is so combersome as to make it only "somewhat" usable/enjoyable. Then there's the "apps." Apps, what apps. Who needs apps. We aren't working here, we're vacationing. We don't need to "get stuff done."
Bodhi sounds good on paper. On LCD, it's not so good. My advice: go with something more mainstream if you're looking for a light distribution. I'll probably feed Bodhi to the dogs.

I bought my dad a new computer to replace his old 2003 32-bit Windows XP that couldn't update Chrome or itself. It had only a CD-ROM Recordable drive and no ability to boot from USB.
Looking for some versions of Linux to revive old computers, I ran into Bodhi. I wasn't able to install it because the ISO was just over the amount that would record onto a CD. (This is the only reason I am not giving Bodhi a 10/10)
I tried Porteus, AntiX, WattOS, and Puppy. Porteus was like learning Chinese for me (using Slackware), AntiX was confusing (I changed the toolbar so much I couldn't navigate without reinstalling the OS completely) WattOS was like.. WTF??!? and Puppy was great.. except it looked like something from Windows 98.
I finally figured out a way to install Bodhi from the USb with a plop loader. Once I did, it was like the gates of computer heaven opened up and gave new life to this poor, old computer.
I am absolutely astounded by the amount of things I can do on this computer now. It runs like a breeze (except when I open up Chrome for anything). It is based on Ubuntu and very familiar for me to get around, I really love the Moksha desktop, and I am grateful for the new computer I have for my guest room.
Make a minimal ISO version that can be burned to a CD -ROM and Bodhi will be accessible on any architecture with no problem!

We have been using Bodhi Linux since version 1.0, around Easter 2011. We discovered that it was both significantly lighter and faster than the current Xubuntu, and at least equally stable.
Bodhi benefits greatly from its Ubuntu LTS base, imho. But it is the Bodhi philosophy of minimalism and the dependable way that it is supported that keeps our posse of family & friends who are Bodhi users so very happy.
Sure, there are the occasional glitches - but over the years we have seen fewer than the fingers on one hand, and the speed with which the community (via the Bodhi Forum) jumps on problems is legendary.
One of the glitches was caused by the Enlightenment 'upgrade' to E19, which was a disappointment, much like the early days before Bodhi when E17 was often buggy and unstable.
When the Bodhi Team forked E17 to create Moksha it was a great relief, and the steady stream of Moksha apps and extensions/modules continues to delight.
As with any distro, different strokes suit different folks, but I have performed hundreds of Bodhi installations on our own PCs, on refurbs that we share with friends and others struggling with computing in home and office. Most of our people get on fine with Bodhi, especially given the excellent web site and forum support.
I'd recommend Bodhi to anybody needing a lighter distro that will run reliably on an old PC - some of the hardware in our posse is over ten years old, and my own 'new' PC is an old hex-core AMD that goes like a hose. It's an interesting project with a friendly community.
Highly recommended!

I just installed Bodhi on my Celeron-based laptop. The machine's hardware was grossly in adequate for the natively installed MS Windows 10. It isn't even good enough for Mint Cinnamon Linux. A quick on-line search said "Bodhi was best' for old hardware. Both prior operating systems were painfully slow. The HD access to swap-memory was constant. Logging in from a screen-saver took 10 minutes, even with Mint. With Bodhi, the HD is strangely, and serenely quiet. The desktop looks good enough. It has a decent selection of applications. Bodhi is newbie friendly, not that that's super important to me, but it's one less PC to wrestle with, OS-wise. It's not as snazzy nor as powerful as my KDE-based Linux installation, but then again the laptop isn't running an overclocked 7700K with 32GB of fast memory like my desktop is. I have no interest in trying another distro. This is the OS I'm going to leave one the drive.

Been using 4.5 for a couple of days now on a home build alongside mint.
Pros: Easy quick install, stable so far, aesthetically pleasing with enlightenment and minimalist default apps. The biggest one of all is sound works out of the box,... don't want to fight with a distro that doesn't have good stable sound card support. The coupe de gras, it resumes stable after suspend, even with nvidia drivers.
Cons; Passed tinkering with bodhi had some problems with certain rtl wireless usb, don't know if this has been fixed as I am running eth now. The suspend timeout could be a little more intuitive and specific as power management in settings is not where you go for suspend timeout!!!!
Overall : modern looking (default is! ...... not the cliché flat theme!), minimal and stable!

I use Bodhi Linux since about 2010. I needed a lightweight distribution for a netbook PC. The Windows version on it didn't work anymore. (Very) slow, always scanning for malware etc.
I started using Lubuntu - also good, but boring - till I finally found Bodhi Linux and using it now on a daily basis. Although I can still use Windows if needed from a virtual box, working with Bodhi Linux is always direct, responsive, fast, safe and challenging.
Don't wait for Windows anymore, just start using Bodhi Linux today.

It's just not for me. I can see the appeal, but I just HATE the Moksha desktop environment. It's like a science experiment between IceWM and Unity gone wrong. It has this weird glossy look, but has rich animations, but also has lightweight elements like no real shading between lines. It's weird when you put all that together, and also I'd much rather have synaptic than an app center.
I understand who this is for, but I still think synaptic should be apart of the package, but I'm not adding that to the review score.
Other than the desktop environment, I really like it. It's Debian!

CONS --
There is a slight learning curve to the functionality of some of the settings.
The desktop has frozen up or restarted on me a few times.
PROS --
Works well on old hardware and simply flies on new hardware with the Moksha desktop.
It has the benefit of using the Ubuntu repositories as well as Bodhi's own repositories.
Since it is built on an Ubuntu LTS base, if there is any troubleshooting to be done, the Ubuntu forums can be consulted with a high probability of success.
Only the most basic, necessary programs are installed by default in the "non-apppack" ISO. From there, one can install whatever programs one wishes to use. It's like starting with a blank sheet of paper and creating your own OS.
It ships with the program bodhibuilder which can be used to create a bootable ISO image of your currently running Bodhi install.
As stated in another review, the Bodhi Linux community is friendly and helpful.
The "non-apppack" ISO's are small in size and are quickly downloaded.
The Moksha desktop is very customizable, and the keyboard shortcut customization really make this a productive OS.
If you are using decent hardware and some compositing software, the desktop can show some bling on transitions, fade effects, etc.
I really can't say enough good things about Bodhi. It has treated me well all these years since I've been using it from v1.2.1.

We've been with Bodhi since V1.0, and really like it.
Reliable and light with optional bling.
We?
... immediate family and a posse of friends (former Windows users) whose machines I would irregularly disinfect for them.
CONS: There is a modest learning curve
PROS:
Desktop
Moksha is a reliable fork of the 'E' desktop that is so wonderfully configurable. Many artistic souls have gravitated to Bodhi, so there's a ton of great artwork. Check out the Bodhi forums. Lot of good people there, and it is the place to get any problems or misunderstandings sorted out. The documentation on the distro and the web site is good.
Reliable?
Yes reliable. Before committing all the way to Bodhi in 2011 we ran a couple of copies dual-booting with the current Xubuntu LTS on a couple of machines - expecting to find that this would be less solid than the venerable and respected XFCE spin of Ubuntu.
Were we ever surprised!
Not only was Bodhi significantly lighter and swifter than Xubuntu, but it was marginally more reliable. More recent checks show that this is still true on our hardware.
Hardware
We love keeping old hardware going, and there are some new bargains to be had too! Like this 2010 HP Mini with a puny Atom and 1GB RAM that was sold with Windows stuffed into it. Booting up Windows would eat ~880MB RAM, leaving around 100MB free. Opening a browser would eat most of that. Three tabs in the browser and it would choke up . . .
So these were sold off cheap by assorted high street stores. Bodhi booted up leaving (coincidentally) some 880MB free. With an SSD, we then had a speedy Atom! On stronger hardware, games and CAD benefit from this.

Bodhi Linux is quick on older hardware and has a minimalistic approach. Great as a base, it is easy to add your favorite applications and doesn't get in the way. The desktop environment Moksha (Enlightenment) is something to get use to, but is light with great looks. Configuration is sometimes a little tricky (different) but the guys behind Bodhi are nice and will help you on the forum and there is also a wiki.

It is all there: fast and easy installation due to Ubuntu LTS base, minimalistic approach, very good repositories with tons of software to build up every kind of system, stability. The desktop is very impressive. What I like most is that Bodhi runs with just a few processes (taskmanager). No bloat. That is efficiency.
Even beginners will not have trouble with installing extra software (Bodhi Appcenter).

Easy on old computers, beautiful desktop. I have not had any unusual problems. Unfortunately, any problems Ubuntu might have Bodhi usually inherits. Team is too small. I wish it was more popular.

Flexible distro, true lightweight, nice optics, very interesting desktop, for sure underrated, and extremely fast.
Installation should be done as offered by the installer, reboot, and then via terminal (!) at first "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -y dist-upgrade", reboot again. Afterwards it should not matter whatever will be done to install necessary software (Bodhi Appcenter or terminal).
Kudos to the Bodhi team. Great work, keep it up! Bodhi rocks.

I started on Slackware in the 90's with linux, I've tried so many Linux distros beta/stable and everything else, I've mixed distros, all sorts, I am a senior systems administrator, I have to admit, I really love this distro, fast, flexible and clean. I would really love to see it continue and get into use by the big players. Great job keep it up!

Small and very fast, nice look and 3D Desktop (if you want with ecomorph and ecomp - but then a little bit slower)
the best Linux for my old PC.

I am very sorry to write this, because I like the idea behind this distro.
Good:
Bodhi is fast, it is true lightweight and the DE is interesting.
Bad:
I am not a beginner and I gave Bodhi a go three times in a row. And always something went wrong. Examples: the updater worked at first, but disappeared after a restart. Gdebi and synaptic were added, but did not start after a click, the workaround via terminal (sudo synaptic or sudo gdebi) worked, but then the updater collapsed. Again workaround via terminal. Kernel update did not help. By the way, Bodhi avoids regular kernel upgrades like Ubuntu does right now and this can be discussed controversially.
I think, the problem is simple but of serious consequence. A quite small team (Bodhi) is operating with Ubuntu LTS. Whenever something gets updated by Ubuntu, Bodhi has to check it immediately (dependencies, themes, gtk and so on) and very often something has to be fixed. That is very challenging. Whoever uses Bodhi has to deal with a lot of small things to be worked on. That is no fun.
Lubuntu in comparison is solid, as fast as Bodhi and I have never had a single issue, everything works out of the box. I think the reason is that Lubuntu is an official flavour of Ubuntu.
What is Linux right now? Not enough cooperation, too many small teams, too many desktop environments (who needs this?) and only a few distros can be considered as really
user-friendly.

Minimal but very fast in my old laptop, that was slow even with Lubuntu!

Simply put...IT WORKS.
its fast, it was easy to setup and update. multimedia works, all the popular programs are supported. the enlightenment desktop is very configurable. the only downside is the lack of desktop gadgets. there simply aren't that many to use. I use the weather and a few others. wish there were more. But in the end..IT WORKS.

This distro makes you wonder why Enlightment is not used more. Moksha looks stunning. Bodhi is stable and very fast.Deserves to be officially supported by Ubuntu.

It works very well. You have got to curve your way of thinking in terms of Linux because of the unique applications and building systems it has, but great little distro and works very well. I only wish it came with a better app center installed on or in the distribution with a little more stuff to choose from, but the selections in the online app center are the best in the Linux world. The performance is amazing on this little distro and everyone can be pleased.

Version 4.1 is completely better:
I've been watching Bodhi ever since version 2, but up until this version, 4.1, it hasn't been stable/reliable. But version 4.1 is finally a version you can install, and consider seriously as the distro for your netbook or other computer.
Nice things about Bodhi:
* The look, design and feel are WONDERFUL - a refreshing change from other boring desktops. and it does so without becoming slow.
* Enlightenment desktop that has been fixed/debugged (renamed Moksha),
* Configuration items are almost all in the same place, with a slider to select the subsections and with everything listed underneath. (except, oddly, auto-hide for the "shelf" (taskbar)... that one you'll have to search for elsewhere in the menu structure.
* Low memory requirements: 128MB minimum, 512MB recommended.
* installing apps is as easy as visiting their website, selecting something, and voilà! easier to use than most package installers.
Cons or issues:
* Live takes 3 times longer to load than installed version
* small team - help is good in the forums. but more transparency would be more reassuring to end-users
* sudo apt install programs don't get added in the correct location in the menus, and no tool to edit that.
* while most configuration and preferences are in one place, oddly enough they've left some out, which could easily have been included there: such as the taskbar ("shelf") configuration (and you can't configure it by right-clicking in the taskbar itself).
* getting your wifi to connect might be an issue (as for many netbooks) - but it may be just something being debugged for certain wifi asics so I don't want to be too harsh.
* desktop cick for menu still opens it to the right near the right side of the screen. hover to touch the right edge and it will move over though.
Not perfect, some work left to be done.

I prefer the new DE over the old one. Average distro though and nothing noteworthy.

Awesome OS in every way possible
It's fast, simple and easy to Install since It's Ubuntu-based Distro meaning the Installation is the same.
I would recommend this over Ubuntu because of it's "Windows like look"
