Knoppix is the ultimate troubleshooter's equivalent of the Swiss Army Knife and has been my default backstop go-to quick fixer for many years. Absolutely indispensable time-saver and safety net for many hardware and software problems and issues. It showcases the best of Linux being versatile and fast. Let's hope it continues to be developed.
It has slowed in recent years probably because it is challenging keep add what has already been cherry picked as best free tools without bloating the overall distribution. I can't thank these folks enough. It's also one of the best -kept secrets of many that needs to have a wider audience.
This is the first live cd I ever seen back in 2005. I was amazed by the built quality and graphical effect back in those days comparing to Windows. I have started using it from those timeline and still keep it in my pocket as backup and live OS. New features and tons of free software added in it with very interesting look. I test PCs, HDD, sound card, LAN cards with this OS. I have kept few old versions of it in my backup hard disk. I was hoping to get a new version but it has been stuck in version 9.1. Wish to get a new version soon from the publisher.
I was looking for the ranking of KNOPPIX on distrowatch but didn't find anything about it. Vanished ! Then I discovered that it was in a 'dormant' status. Eventhough new versions exist since 9.1, but cannot be downloaded directlu. The newest one version comes with a magazine . Bad luck! I was really disappointed.
It is such a great distro! works everywhere, one of the really fastest to boot, nearly every hardware is recognised straight ahead, and just in seconds, we are up and running with many apps included. No need to install. I start it directly from the iso ( either from the hard disk or a usb key without installing ) ...
It is one of my favourites !
'wake up' KNOPPIX ! dont keep yourself in that 'dormant' state!
Improved compatibility with video sound--when viewing YouTube videos with browser(s), for example. Far better functionality of apps and ease of installation compared to previous versions.
Digital camera interface worked immediately following setup--experienced difficulty on earlier versions. Internet connection was auto-detect during setup without technical knowledge required or settings to be inputted.
Blender posed a problem in memory allocation to prevent crashing when rendering.
The user interface and method of navigation is customizable to make the desktop similar to Windows or Apple for those who wish to do so.
Knoppix is THE BEST live Linux distro. EVER. It has got anything you could ever need that you can use for a portable distro that can do anything. It was my first ever Linux distro that I came into contact and it's just great.
It can be used as a rescue system (which I have used several times in the past). For example, for people who have problems with Windows or their system is infected with viruses, Knoppix can be used to recover the files from the hard drive and to fix the problems.
It is meant to be used as a live distro, so don't expect it to behave like a regular installable distro, although it can be "installed" on a flash drive with persistency or on any hard drive.
I see that Knoppix 9.2 CBIT edition will include XFCE4 . I hope XFCE4 makes it to the next general release . I have not used Knoppix for a long time simply because I couldn't figure out how to make XFCE work on it .
The last version of Knoppix I used was excellent , and Knoppix was how I was introduced to LINUX back in the Knoppix 4.0 days .
I am excited to try this new Knoppix when it is released.
I presently use MX Linux and it is great , but i still think of Knoppix as "home" .
I have downloaded almost every release to try out on a usb drive , so I've kept up enough to know what the recent releases can do .
I do hope that the XFCE desktop will be released in a CD sized format too.

Overall, I like knoppix but version 9.1 it is getting way too long on the tooth.
Starting from the begining, Knoppix declares they are not responsible for the
safety ie., presence of virus on the knoppix downloads
Years ago I started using knoppix for just about all my linux needs but nowadays some
banks refuse the conection because of unsafe ( read not updated) browsers.
So as times goes by, the use of knoppix 9.1 gets reduced to hard drive maintenance like
gparted, dd and Disk, followed by a reliable antivirus supplied by others.
Reading the review from Version: 8.6.1 of 2021-04-04, I use knoppix live only and to
get sound, I just leave the headphones plugged in all the time.
Other than that, I like the quick start up and and quick results from just about everywhere
Knoppix is a good distro with its issues, that is live-usb and contains a lot of preinstalled software(less in 9.1), which might make it look like a good distrib for linux starters(but its not): relatively low spec requirements, hardware autodetection, everything is included and if you screw up you can just throw usb stick in a dumpster and boot from internal drive. Its somewhat true, and its easy to backup since whole system is only 4-8gb(4gb knoppix + up to 4gb data image), however knoppix itself isnt very user-friendly: without data image or overlay there is no way to store settings, and some settings dont save even with it(for example sound, to have some sort of permanent setting you will need to modify your /etc/aumixrc file).
As of sound, you will want to make it persistent(or delete startup and shutdown .ogg files in /usr/share/sounds) unless you like hearing "INITIATING STARTUP SEQUENCE" every time it boots up, or you have no audio output.
Also there might be problems with setting up keyboard with more than 1 language layout, might use IBus Preferences to do that(and not "Keyboard and Mouse").
Its not very hardwire requiring and runs fine on older PCs, however its best to have good flash drive(usb 3.0 and better) since cheap usb(2.0) stick may substantially slow down knoppix boot time and overall performance. Also usb port is important, some PCs may have crappy ports that slow down knoppix boot.
Pros: capable, stuffed with apps, functional.
Cons: hard to install in first time, hard to setup, problems with persistence, "INITIATING STARTUP SEQUENCE".
Certainly one of the best and most complete live systems. But it can also be installed.
And you can download a CD version that is also suitable for older or weaker computers.
Tip: If you use the integrated tool "Flash Knoppix" it is possible to install Knoppix on an USB stick instead of writing it to a CD or DVD. Knoppix on an USB 3.0 stick ist much faster than on CD/DVD.
just one more thing I forgot to add to my below about 9.1
For anyone new to Knoppix, be sure to add sweeper to the desktop,
it's important to use when if your usb ever slows down. A great app to clean out history, cash, recent docs
I first tried the CD version, but it would not boot. Perhaps the fact that the latest ISO is from 2013 had something to do with it.
Then I tried the DVD version. It booted fine. The desktop was LXDE. There are many applications included, but since the latest ISO is from 2019, many of them are in need of updates. I updated the system via apt which took hours on a USB flash drive, but there was a failure involving bind9. I modified Firefox settings just to see if they would be saved via persistence. I rebooted and saw that my changed settings were indeed saved, with me accepting boot defaults.
If the developer would fix the bind9 problem, it would be a great distribution.
A Rock Solid 10
Was looking for a live distro to protect my information while netsurfing. Too many fell flat, some even came with preinstalled Rootkits that were identified with RKhunter. However, Knoppix 8.6.1 is truely amazing. It automatically sets the removable drive in persistance, so the desktop is back where you left it. The no scripts plugin really works as it should, it has a German TV program with a kazillion free channels to select from - called Mediathekview. After using dd gui to burn the iso to usb, the first boot is slow. This is because knoppix opens up the entire usb to use. The dvd version has every bell and whistle you could ever imagine, AND YES, everything works. Got me a 1TB usb drive, installed it to that -
