The Fedora team have announced the availability of Fedora 41. The project's latest release ships with version 6.11 of the Linux kernel, RPM 4.20 and GNOME 47 for the distribution's Workstation edition. This release also removes GNOME's X11 support in the Workstation edition. "Fedora Workstation 41 is based on GNOME 47. Read What's New in Fedora Workstation 41? for details. Notably for command-line users, we've changed the default terminal to GNOME Console. It's more lightweight, but has some nice new features as well. (GNOME Terminal is still there if you need some of the flexibility it offers.) Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop ships with the latest KDE 6.2 release. See What's New in Fedora KDE 41? for more. We also have a new Spin featuring KDE Plasma Mobile. If you're interested in trying something new, take a look at Fedora Miracle! Miracle is a new desktop environment built on Mir and Wayland. " Additional information can be found in the release announcement and in the release notes. The Fedora team have announced the release of a new development snapshot, Fedora 41 Beta. This development release removes Python 2, re-introduces the NVIDIA binary driver through the software centre, and upgrades the DNF package manager. "Although it can’t be part of Fedora Linux, we know that the NVIDIA binary driver is pragmatically essential for many people. Previously, NVIDIA driver installation had been removed from GNOME Software because it didn’t support Secure Boot, which is increasingly-often enabled by default on laptops. This change brings the option back for Fedora Workstation users with Secure Boot supported. This is good news for folks who want to use Fedora Linux for gaming and CUDA. The change also helps Fedora stay relevant for AI/LLVM workloads. In Fedora Linux 41, the DNF package management command will be updated to version 5. (DNF5 and bootc will be available on image-based Fedora variants such as Atomic desktops and Fedora IoT.) The new packages will make it simpler to build and update bootable container images based on these variants." Additional details can be found in the Fedora Magazine release announcement. Matthew Miller has announced the release of Fedora 40. The new release features GNOME 46, KDE Plasma 6, and PyTorch for deep learning tasks. The release announcement shares the highlights: "Fedora Workstation Edition features the GNOME desktop environment, now updated to version 46. Check out What's New in Fedora Workstation 40? for the highlights! The KDE Spin now includes KDE Plasma 6, and runs with Wayland out of the box. Read more about that and other KDE Spin updates at What's New in Fedora KDE 40? We're also officially reviving the “Fedora Atomic Desktop” brand for all of our variants which use ostree or image-based provisioning. Our technology isn't really 'immutable', so this provides a better grouping. Read more about this at Introducing Fedora Atomic Desktops - but in short, Fedora Silverblue and Fedora Kinoite will remain, while the other desktop variants will become Fedora Sway Atomic and Fedora Budgie Atomic." The Fedora team have published a beta snapshot for the upcoming release of Fedora 40. The new beta ships with GNOME 46 and KDE Plasma 6, with the latter offering Wayland as the only login session. "The Fedora Project is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Fedora Linux 40 beta, the next step towards our planned Fedora Linux 40 release at the end of April. Fedora KDE desktop now ships with Plasma 6, thanks to a lot of hard work from the Fedora KDE Special Interest Group and the upstream KDE project, is Wayland-only. (Don't worry, X11-native apps will still run under Wayland.) Fedora Workstation 40 beta brings us GNOME 46. We're bringing you Podman 5 for container management. The AMD ROCm accelerator framework is updated to version 6. And, we've got the updated language stacks you expect from a new release: LLVM 18 (that's Clang and friends), as well as GCC 14 (with newer glibc, Binutils and gdb). There are many other changes big and small across the release." Additional details can be found in the release announcement. The Fedora project has published a new release, Fedora 39, which includes GNOME 45, an updated version of Inkscape, and updated development tools. This release is also offered in a new atomic desktop flavour which uses the Budgie desktop and is called Fedora Onyx. "On November 6, 2003, the Fedora Project released the Fedora Core 1. One day and twenty years later, we're pleased to bring you Fedora Linux 39, our complete, community-built operating system for desktops, laptops, servers, the cloud, edge devices - and just about anything else you can think of. Fedora Workstation now features GNOME 45, which brings better performance and many usability enhancements, including a new workspace switcher and a much-improved image viewer. If you're looking for a different desktop experience, our Budgie Special Interest Group has created Fedora Onyx, a Budgie-based 'Atomic' desktop in the spirit of Fedora Silverblue. Of course, that's not all - we also have updated desktop flavors featuring KDE Plasma Desktop, Xfce, Cinnamon and more." Additional details are offered in the Fedora Magazine release announcement. The Fedora project has announced a new beta release of the Red Hat-sponsored distribution. The new beta snapshot, Fedora 39 Beta, is a relatively minor upgrade with a number of proposals (such as an upgrade for the DNF package manager) not completing in time to make it into this release. However, the GNOME desktop and LibreOffice have received significant updates: "The Fedora Project is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Fedora Linux 39 Beta, the next step towards our planned Fedora Linux 39 release at the end of October. Fedora Workstation 39 Beta brings us GNOME 45 (itself also in beta). For everyone who needs a free and open source desktop suite, there’s LibreOffice 7.6. Fedora Cloud images for AWS now default to less-expensive gp3 storage volumes. We also have an update to the GNU Toolchain (GCC 13.2, Binutils 2.40, glibc 2.38, gdb 13.2). Of course, developers appreciate that we include the latest tools, but these updates also include improvements to security and performance that will benefit everyone who uses Fedora Linux." The Fedora team have announced the release of Fedora 38. The new release offers the GNOME 44 desktop in the project's Workstation edition. The distribution now features shorter timeout delays when services shutdown, which makes shutting down or restarting the system faster. The DNF5 package manager has been introduced as a technology preview and users are invited to try it out and report on their experiences. "Fedora Workstation focuses on the desktop experience. As usual, Fedora Workstation features the latest GNOME release. GNOME 44 includes a lot of great improvements, including a new lock screen, a 'background apps' section on the quick menu, and improvements to accessibility settings. In addition, enabling third-party repositories now enables an unfiltered view of applications on Flathub. With this release, we've shortened the default timeout when services shut down. This helps your system power off faster - important when you need to grab your laptop and go. Of course, we produce more than just the Editions. Fedora Spins and Labs target a variety of audiences and use cases, including Fedora Comp Neuro, which provides tools for computational neuroscience, and desktop environments like Fedora LXQt, which provides a lightweight desktop environment. And, don't forget our alternate architectures: ARM AArch64, Power, and S390x." The release announcement and release notes offer additional information. The Fedora project has published a beta snapshot of the distribution's upcoming Fedora 38 release. The new beta features GNOME 44, updated development tools, and strict compile flags to protect against common memory attacks. "Fedora 38 Workstation Beta includes GNOME 44. It’s currently in beta, with a final release expected at the end of March. GNOME 44 includes a lot of great improvements, including a new lock screen, a 'background apps' section on the quick menu, and improvements to accessibility settings. In addition, enabling third-party repositories now enables an unfiltered view of applications on Flathub. We always strive to bring new security features to users quickly. Packages are now built with stricter compiler flags that protect against buffer overflows. The rpm package manager uses a Sequoia-based OpenPGP parser instead of its own implementation. If you’re profiling applications, you’ll appreciate the frame pointers now built into official packages. This makes Fedora Linux a great platform for developers looking to improve Linux application performance." Matthew Miller has announced the release of Fedora 37. The latest release includes two new editions: Fedora CoreOS, which replaces Atomic Host, and Fedora Cloud returns. "Fedora Workstation focuses on the desktop experience. As usual, Fedora Workstation features the latest GNOME release. GNOME 43 includes a new device security panel in Settings, providing the user with information about the security of hardware and firmware on the system. Building on the previous release, more core GNOME apps have been ported to the latest version of the GTK toolkit, providing improved performance and a modern look. With this release, we’ve made a few changes to allow you to slim down your installation a bit. We split the language packs for the Firefox browser into subpackages. This means you can remove the 'firefox-langpacks' package if you don’t need the localization. The runtime packages for gettext - the tools that help other packages produce multilingual text - are split into a separate, optional subpackage." Tomas Hrcka has announced the release of a new development snapshot of Fedora. The Fedora 36 Beta ships with GNOME 42, LXQt 1.0, and version 3.1 of the Ruby development language. Wayland support running on NVIDIA video cards has been improved and is now supported by default. "Fedora 36 Workstation Beta includes GNOME 42, the newest release of the GNOME desktop environment. GNOME 42 includes a global dark style UI setting. It also has a redesigned screenshot tool. And many core GNOME apps have been ported to the latest version of the GTK toolkit, providing improved performance and a modern look. Fedora Silverblue and Kinoite now have /var on a separate subvolume for new installs, which makes handling snapshots of dynamic data easier to manage independently from the system snapshots. Fans of the lightweight LXQt desktop environment will be glad to see the upstream 1.0 release in Fedora Linux 36. You can install the LXQt Spin directly or install LXQt alongside your existing desktop environment. If you use the proprietary NVIDIA driver, GDM sessions will now use Wayland by default." The Fedora team have announced the launch of Fedora 35. The new version of Fedora ships with GNOME 41, the PipeWire audio system, and the WirePlumber session manager. "We switched the default audio system to PipeWire in Fedora Linux 34, and now we're improving this by adding the new WirePlumber session manager. WirePlumber allows for more customization of the policy and rules for audio and video. It provides a richer development experience and adds bindings for most languages. If you enable the third-party repositories that ship in Fedora Linux desktop variants, those repositories are now immediately available. Additionally, enabling third-party repositories now makes selected Flathub applications available via a filtered Flathub remote. This eases access to a curated list of applications that will not cause legal or other problems for Fedora to point to, does not overlap Fedora Flatpaks, and works reasonably well." Matthew Miller has announced the release of Fedora 34, the latest version of the popular Linux distribution sponsored by Red Hat: "I'm excited to share the results of the hard work of thousands of contributors to the Fedora Project: our latest release, Fedora Linux 34, is here." As usual, Fedora ships in several editions and spins, available for the x86_64 and AArch64 architectures. The "Workstation" variant now comes with GNOME 40: "Fedora editions are targeted outputs geared toward specific 'showcase' uses on the desktop, in server and cloud environments, and the Internet of Things. Fedora Workstation focuses on the desktop, and in particular, it's geared toward software developers who want a 'just works' Linux operating system experience. This release features GNOME 40, the next step in focused, distraction-free computing. GNOME 40 brings improvements to navigation whether you use a trackpad, a keyboard, or a mouse. The app grid and settings have been redesigned to make interaction more intuitive. You can read more about what changed and why in a Fedora Magazine article from March." The Fedora team have announced the launch of a new development snapshot of their distribution. Fedora 34 Beta introduces a number of significant changes, including GNOME 40, replacing PulseAudio with PipeWire, and the default Btr filesystem enables transparent compression. "After Fedora Linux 33 made BTRFS the default filesystem for desktop variants, Fedora Linux 34 Beta enables transparent compression for more disk space. This increases the lifespan of flash-based media by reducing write amplification for solid-state disks. This compression improves the read and write performance for larger files, with the potential to add significant time efficiency into workflows. With a foundation for future enhancements, we aim to continue adding to these capabilities in future versions. Desktop audio will transition from using PulseAudio to PipeWire to mix and manage audio streams. The supports low-latency for pro audio use cases. PipeWire is better designed to meet the needs of containers and applications shipped in Flatpaks. The integration of PipeWire also creates the space for just one audio infrastructure to serve both desktop and professional use cases for mixing. Fedora 34 Workstation Beta includes GNOME 40, the newest release of the GNOME desktop environment." The release announcement offers further details. The Fedora project has announced the release of Fedora 33. The project's latest version ships with Btrfs as the default filesystem (on the Workstation edition) and runs GNOME 3.38. Each edition now enables the EarlyOOM service to free up memory when heavy processes consume too much RAM and swap space. The project has also made nano the default command line text editor, replacing vi. "No matter what variant of Fedora you use, you're getting the latest the open source world has to offer. Following our 'First' foundation, we've updated key programming language and system library packages, including Python 3.9, Ruby on Rails 6.0, and Perl 5.32. In Fedora KDE, we've followed the work in Fedora 32 Workstation and enabled the EarlyOOM service by default to improve the user experience in low-memory situations. To make the default Fedora experience better, we've set nano as the default editor. nano is a friendly editor for new users. Those of you who want the power of editors like vi can, of course, set your own default." Further information can be found in the project's release announcement. The Fedora team have announced the availability of Fedora 33 Beta. The new development snapshot includes new features, such as using Btrfs as the default filesystem along with GNOME 3.38 as the Workstation edition's desktop. Some editions, apart from just Workstation, now enable the EarlyOOM process killer to avoid reduced system performance when RAM is full. "All of the desktop variants of Fedora 33 Beta - including Fedora Workstation, Fedora KDE, and others - will use Btrfs as the default filesystem. This is a big shift: we've been using ext filesystems since Fedora Core 1. Btrfs offers some really compelling features for users, including transparent compression and copy-on-write. For Fedora 33, we're only defaulting to the basic features of Btrfs, but we'll build out the default feature set to include more goodies in future releases." Matthew Miller has announced the release of Fedora 31. The new version includes a special isolated container feature called Fedora Toolbox. "If you haven't used the Fedora Toolbox, this is a great time to try it out. This is a simple tool for launching and managing personal workspace containers, so you can do development or experiment in an isolated experience. It's as simple as running 'toolbox Enter' from the command line. This containerized workflow is vital for users of the ostree-based Fedora variants like CoreOS, IoT, and Silverblue, but is also extremely useful on any workstation or even server system. Look for many more enhancements to this tool and the user experience around it in the next few months - your feedback is very welcome. Fedora Editions are targeted outputs geared toward specific 'showcase' uses. Fedora Workstation focuses on the desktop, and particular software developers who want a 'just works' Linux operating system experience. This release features GNOME 3.34, which brings significant performance enhancements which will be especially noticeable on lower-powered hardware." The release announcement offers further details. Matthew Miller has announced the release of Fedora 30. The new version of the Red Hat-sponsored distribution ships with GNOME 3.32, PHP 7.3 and version 9 of the GNU Compiler Collection. There is also a new feature called Linux System Roles to help administrators set up modules through Ansible: "Fedora Workstation features GNOME 3.32 - the latest release of this popular desktop environment. GNOME 3.32 features an updated visual style, including the user interface, the icons, and the desktop itself. New to Fedora Server are Linux System Roles - a collection of roles and modules executed by Ansible to assist Linux admins in the configuration of common GNU/Linux subsystems. No matter what variant of Fedora you use, you're getting the latest the open source world has to offer. GCC 9, Bash 5.0, and PHP 7.3 are among the many updated packages in Fedora 30. We're excited for you to try it out." Further details can be found in the project's release announcement. The Fedora team has published a new beta release, Fedora 30 Beta. The new development snapshot features GNOME 3.32 and provides packages for the Deepin and Pantheon desktop environments. Performance improvements are also coming to the distribution's DNF package manager: "Fedora 30 Beta includes two new options for desktop environment. DeepinDE and Pantheon Desktop join GNOME, KDE Plasma, Xfce, and others as options for users to customize their Fedora experience. All DNF repository metadata for Fedora 30 Beta is compressed with the zchunk format in addition to xz or gzip. zchunk is a new compression format designed to allow for highly efficient deltas. When Fedora's metadata is compressed using zchunk, DNF will download only the differences between any earlier copies of the metadata and the current version. Fedora 30 Workstation Beta includes GNOME 3.32, the latest version of the popular desktop environment. GNOME 3.32 features updated visual style, including the user interface, the icons, and the desktop itself. For a full list of GNOME 3.32 highlights, see the [GNOME] release notes." Matthew Miller has announced the release of Fedora 29. The project's latest version is being published almost exactly 15 years after Fedora Core 1 was released and is available in many editions and spins for multiple architectures. "This release is particularly exciting because it’s the first to include the Fedora Modularity feature across all our different variants. Modularity lets us ship different versions of packages on the same Fedora base. This means you no longer need to make your whole OS upgrade decisions based on individual package versions. For example, you can choose Node.js version 8 or version 10, on either Fedora 28 or Fedora 29. Or you can choose between a version of Kubernetes which matches OpenShift Origin, and a module stream which follows the upstream. Other big changes include GNOME 3.30 on the desktop, ZRAM for our ARM images, and a Vagrant image for Fedora Scientific." Further details can be found in the project's release announcement. The Fedora team has announced the availability of a new testing snapshot. The new beta release, Fedora 29 beta, includes GNOME 3.30, hides the boot loader menu when there is only one operating system installed and modularity is now available across all Fedora editions. "Fedora 28 introduced modular repositories for Fedora Server Edition. For Fedora 29 beta, modularity is available in all editions, spins and labs. Modularity makes multiple versions of important packages available in parallel and it will work with the same DNF you already know. Learn more about Modularity by reading the documentation, or listening to episode 003 of the Fedora Podcast. Fedora 29 Workstation beta provides GNOME 3.30. GNOME 3.30 streamlines performance, adds a new Podcasts app, and automatically updates Flatpaks in Software Center. Fedora 29 beta also includes many other updates: the Fedora Atomic Workstation was rebranded as Fedora Silverblue, the GRUB menu will be hidden on single OS installation." The Fedora team has launched a new release of their popular, Red Hat sponsored distribution. The new version, Fedora 28, introduces some important changes, including the ability to more easily add third-party software to the operating system's Workstation edition. "The headline feature for Fedora 28 Server is the inclusion of the new Modular repository. This lets you select between different versions of software like NodeJS or Django, so you can chose the stack you need for your software. Interested? Check out the documentation for using modules. Also of note: 64-bit ARM (Aarch64) is now a primary architecture for Fedora Server. Fedora 28 Workstation has big news too. For the first time, we're making it easy for users to enable certain third-party software sources, including proprietary NVIDIA drivers. We've worked for a long time to figure out the right way to do this without compromising our ideals, and I think the opt-in approach we're trying now does it well. Read more in the Magazine article on third-party repos, and also check out other F28 Workstation news." Further information can be found in the project's release announcement. The Fedora team has launched a new testing version of their Red Hat sponsored project. The new development release, Fedora 28 Beta, features 64-bit ARM support and GNOME 3.28. VirtualBox guest additions are now included by default. The big new feature though across all Fedora editions is the project's modular repository: "As discussed in Modularity is Dead, Long Live Modularity, we have taken a simpler approach to modules for F28. Instead of a separate modularized operating system, we've added a new Modular Repository alongside the traditional Everything Repository. With the Fedora Server Edition, the Modular repository will be immediately available. You will have access to a few modules today with more to come during the run-up to the F28 release. You can enable Modularity in other Editions and variants of Fedora, but unfortunately, Modules are not yet available through GNOME Software or Plasma Discover. We are working on providing the necessary support to libdnf which these tools (and others) rely on. To use the Modular repo on a Fedora desktop platform, we recommend enabling it inside a container." Matthew Miller has announced the launch of Fedora 26. The Fedora distribution is available in three editions: Workstation, Server and Atomic Host and can be run on a variety of hardware, including i686, x86_64 and ARM boards. Fedora 26 features a new partition manager in the Anaconda system installer along with many package updates: "First, of course, we have thousands of improvements from the various upstream software we integrate, including new development tools like GCC 7, Golang 1.8, and Python 3.6. We’ve added a new partitioning tool to Anaconda (the Fedora installer) - the existing workflow is great for non-experts, but this option will be appreciated by enthusiasts and sysadmins who like to build up their storage scheme from basic building blocks. F26 also has many under-the-hood improvements, like better caching of user and group info and better handling of debug information. And the DNF package manager is at a new major version (2.5), bringing many new features." Additional information can be found in the release announcement and in the distribution's release notes. The Fedora Project has launched the first alpha snapshot of the distribution's upcoming Fedora 24 release. The new testing snapshot features version 6 of the GNU Compiler Collection and a preview of GNOME 3.20. Wayland is available as a session option, but X remains the default display server. "Workstation features a preview of GNOME 3.20, which was released just after the Alpha was cut. The GNOME 3.20 release is already available in the Fedora 24 update stream. Once you install Fedora 24 Alpha, you can use Software or DNF to update. GNOME 3.20 will of course be part of Fedora 24 Beta and the Final release. We have decided not to make Wayland, the next generation graphic stack, the default in Fedora 24 Workstation. However, Wayland remains available as an option, and the Workstation team would greatly appreciate your help in testing. Our goal is one full release where the non-default Wayland option works seamlessly, or reasonably close thereto. At that point we will make Wayland the default with X11 as the fallback option." The latest version of Fedora ships with version 3.18 of the GNOME desktop, LibreOffice 5 and version 4.2 of the Linux kernel. This release sees core utilities, such as the system installer and package manager, ported to Python 3. In addition, software packages have been hardened with memory address randomization built in. "As with every Fedora release, almost every component has a new version, with improvements across the board. Of particular note, Fedora Workstation includes the GNOME 3.18 desktop environment and the LibreOffice 5.0 office suite. Fedora 23 also has important under-the-hood security improvements, with increased hardening for all compiled software and with insecure SSL3 and RC4 protocols disabled. We've also updated all of the software installed by default in Fedora Cloud Base Image and Fedora Workstation to use Python version 3, and the Mono .NET compatible framework is now at version 4. Dennis Gilmore has announced the release of Fedora 23 Beta. This new test release showcases a number of important changes to the Red Hat sponsored distribution. Fedora's new beta release features security hardened packages to protect against memory corruption, GNOME 3.18 is included in the project's Workstation edition and support for security protocols known to be vulnerable (such as SSL3 and RC4) have been removed from the distribution. "Fedora 23 includes a number of changes that will improve all of the
editions. For example, Fedora 23 makes use of compiler flags to improve security by `hardening' the binaries against memory corruption vulnerabilities, buffer overflows, and so on. This is a 'behind the scenes' change that most users won't notice through normal use of a Fedora edition, but will help provide additional system security." Dennis Gilmore has announced the availability of a new development release of Fedora. The new release, Fedora 23 Alpha, is the first testing snapshot of the Fedora 23 series. The new testing release features packages built with extra protection against memory corruption. Fedora 23 Alpha also offers support for Unicode 8.0, a preview of GNOME 3.18 and LibreOffice 5.0. "Naturally, GNOME is getting an upgrade, with Fedora 23 containing a
preview of the upcoming GNOME 3.18 release, which is easier to use than ever. There are also many enhancements on the way, such as improvements to Wayland toward making it the default graphical server in a future release; support for ambient backlight drivers for a more responsive display on laptops; and changes to the Software application so it can update system firmware, and be smarter about metered Internet connections. Users that are trying to get a little work done on Fedora will be happy to see LibreOffice 5 in Fedora 23, which includes a lot of new features and improvements: style previews in the sidebar, Word-compatible text highlighting, built-in image crop, UI for data bars in Calc, support for Time-Stamp Protocol in PDF export, support for Adobe Swatch Exchange color palettes, import of Apple Pages files, improved support for HiDPI screens, and significantly improved support for MS Office formats." The Fedora Project has launched a new version of the Fedora distribution. The new release, version 22, offers users three separate product lines, each tailored to a specific environment. These three product branches are called Workstation (for desktop use and developers), Server (for traditional server deployments) and Cloud (a minimal image for quick deployments). "We are proud to announce the official release of Fedora 22, the community-driven and community-built operating system now available in Cloud, Server, and Workstation editions. Fedora 22 has built on the foundation we laid with Fedora 21 and the work to create distinct editions of Fedora focused on the desktop, server and cloud. It's not radically different, but there are a fair amount of new features coupled with features we've already introduced but have improved for Fedora 22." The new Workstation release introduces more flexible firewall technology for developers while the Server edition offers XFS as the default file system and a central management console called Cockpit. Fedora Cloud allows administrators to perform atomic upgrades and rollback package updates for the entire system. See the release announcement and release notes for more details. Dennis Gilmore has announced the availability of the much-delayed alpha release of Fedora 21. This comes almost exactly one year since the project's last alpha release - that of Fedora 20, released on 24 September 2013. From the release announcement: "The Fedora 21 Alpha release has arrived, with a preview of the latest free and open source technology under development. As part of the Fedora.next initiative, Fedora 21 will boast three products: Cloud, Server and Workstation. Note that for the alpha release, the network installers act as generic, 'universal' installers, offering the entire set of Fedora package groups by default, rather than only the groups associated with the product they are meant to represent. Each of the products will build on the 'base' set of packages for Fedora." Download the workstation edition from here: Fedora-Live-Workstation-x86_64-21_Alpha-1.iso (1,328MB, SHA256, pkglist). The latest issue of Red Hat Magazine includes an interesting overview of the new Fedora Core 4, released earlier this week: "The GNOME 2.10 desktop has several new productivity boosting tools along with some changes in the behavior of how pop-up windows work. In previous versions of GNOME, when using instant messaging clients like GAIM, the moment a message appears, the window tends to steal focus from what you're currently typing or doing, showing you your instant message. This behavior is similar to clicking on a link in an e-mail and having Firefox pop-up in front of your e-mail message." Here is the full story with screenshots. Mad Penguin has checked out the progress of Fedora Core 4, currently in the final stages of development: "To me, this release is looking like it's going to be pretty speedy. From what I've witnessed so far, it runs much better than any previous Fedora releases... much more responsive. As far as I'm aware, Fedora Core 4 will be the first distribution to be compiled with the new GCC 4.0 compiler, which was released on April 20th. This release is touted to produce much cleaner and faster code than its predecessor, GCC 3.4.3. It's true that Fedora Core 4 test 2 does feel faster, or at least that was my experience, but can it be attributed to the updated GCC? That I'm not entirely sure of, but I'd say it's entirely possible." Read the rest of the review with screenshots.

LinuxPlanet has published a review of Fedora Core 4 Test2: "As a test release, Fedora Core 4 Test 2 shows just how good FC4 will be when it's officially releases. Should you punt FC3 and upgrade? Frankly, not on your primary system unless you don't need the guarantees of an official, complete release. Aside from various minor problems, the only problems I encountered that I felt were extremely serious were those in updating the the system. Fedora has some great mailing lists and forums where early adopters can get assistance from Fedora's huge community of friendly, knowledgeable devotees. It's easy to see why Fedora Core is a popular distribution, and FC4 should be great when it gets here! I'm going to wait for the official release before I upgrade my FC3 system - but I'll definitely try the next test release or release candidate on one of my scratch boxes." NewsForge has published a review of Fedora Core 3: "If I were a movie reviewer, I would give FC3 a thumbs-up. It is a solid release with few problems, and most of those are specific to certain hardware. Its ease of installation and package management system make it an excellent choice for newbies who want to learn Linux without the horrendous learning curve associated with having to compile everything yourself. Its functional SELinux component is a powerful incentive to install it just to learn what will certainly become a standard in the near future. A Linux and open-source software consultant has published a review of Fedora Core 2 on DesktopLinux.com: "For the Linux veterans, it's one of the last "free" distributions of GNU/Linux. In spite of its description as a technology proving ground, Fedora II provides Linux users with a good Linux desktop experience. At the same time you'll also have a desktop experience which doesn't try and patronise you, instead it focuses on letting you get your work done with the best applications for the job such as OpenOffice.org and Evolution. A growing user community also helps to boost this experience, together with a completely GPL license and no cost of purchase as with SUSE 9.1 and Mandrake 10." The full review with screenshots.

eWEEK has reviewed Fedora Core 1 and this is the author's conclusion: "Overall we like Fedora, but have some reservations. The application install/remove tool problems absolutely must be fixed. We could not recommend this distro to a Linux newbie until that problem was resolved. The lack of MP3/DVD play might also be an issue for some users. Unless you're a tinkerer (and what real Linux geek isn't?), it might make more sense to just wait until the next release and see if the bugs have all been worked out. Once some of the current bugs are fixed, Fedora could be considered for use on the corporate desktop. It already provides a rich array of functionality and comes with lots of excellent software such as OpenOffice, Evolution and GAIM." The 4-page review starts here.

OSNews has reviewed Fedora Core 1 and, as the title suggests, the reviewer is not overly impressed: "There is not a chance that I would use Fedora as my main OS at this point. It's got as many bugs as Swiss cheese has holes, multimedia performance (at least with XMMS) and included multimedia feature-set is below par, application installation is a major pain in the rear, and there is no official support anymore for the bugs encountered throughout the experience. If this distro is just serving as a testbed for Red Hat's ideas to see if they work and then move them to their Enterprise product, it just means that Fedora will always be in beta state, whether or not they announce them as final or not." IMHO, this is the perfect strategy for Red Hat. They have been battling two extremes, the corporate server market versus the bleeding edge desktop users at retail. These two camps are at odds with one another, corporate wanting slow gradual changes and retail wanting the bleeding edge feature set. Fedora is the ultimate compromise and one community in which I'm a willing participant." The full review with many screenshots.

OSNews is the first with a review of Fedora Core 1: "I can summarise my experience with Fedora as being a mixed bag of emotions, in some cases it surprises pleasantly (resolution changing for one, and the half-gui boot up) but in other cases there is nothing obviously apparent about this release that hits you in the face with that WOW factor (GNOME looks essentially the same as it did since Red Hat 8.0 came out more or less). Yes there is the ability for up2date to use Yum and APT repositories but for users unfamiliar with that technology then is that really something to go 'hey look what this can do?'" The 3-page review starts here.

NEW • Fedora Test 3 Review |

LinuxElectrons has reviewed the latest release of Red Hat's Fedora, Test 3: "The Linux community will benefit tremendously from Fedora. With Red Hat's expertise and knowledge combined with a strong community we should expect nothing less than a high performance desktop. So far, this has been the case. IMHO, this is the perfect strategy for Red Hat. They have been battling two extremes, the corporate server market versus the bleeding edge desktop users at retail. These two camps are at odds with one another, corporate wanting slow gradual changes and retail wanting the bleeding edge feature set. Fedora is the ultimate compromise and one community in which I'm a willing participant." The full review with screenshots.

Red Hat has released a new beta version of Fedora Core, test3, code name "Severn": "Yes, it's another update of the Fedora Core test release, SEVERN. Problems with SEVERN should be reported via bugzilla." Unfortunately, with the exception of the very brief announcement, there is little information available about the release, either on the Fedora web site, which has yet to be updated, or on the FTP mirrors, which lack the usual README and RELEASE-NOTES files, "casualty of the redhat-release -> fedora-release name change", according to this mailing list post. The good news is that they should return with the next release: "It's a known issue, unfortunately discovered early this morning (after the mirrors had already started doing their thing). These files will return in subsequent releases..." So the release notes are missing but the ISO images can be downloaded from here: severn-i386-disc1.iso (636MB), severn-i386-disc2.iso (638MB), severn-i386-disc3.iso (633MB), or via BitTorrent. Existing installations can be upgraded with up2date.

NEW • Fedora Core Linux 0.94 Getting Started |

This is a very nice article reviewing the new Fedora Linux with many useful tips to get most out of it, all courtesy of JohnMunsch.com: "If you aren't already familiar with installing consumer Linux distributions like Red Hat 9.0 the installation of Fedora Core may take you by surprise. It's graphical, it's simple (at least as simple as installing any recent Windows release), and the final result is graphical, user friendly in lots of areas, and often quite attractive. It's not perfect yet, but it's hard not to think that by the time Microsoft gets around to releasing Longhorn (their codename for the next Windows version) in the 2005-2006 timeframe that Linux will have done a lot of catching up." The full story with plenty of screenshots.

A first beta release of the newly established Fedora Project (formerly Red Hat Linux) is now available. Some interesting items in the release notes include: "The Red Hat Update Agent (up2date) now supports installing packages from apt and yum repositories as well as local directories. This includes dependency solving and obsoletes handling. Additional repositories can be configured in the /etc/sysconfig/rhn/sources file. Fedora Core 0.94 includes Postfix 2.0. If you are upgrading from Red Hat Linux 9 or earlier and were using Postfix 1.x, you should review your Postfix configuration for compatibility with the newer version." Fedora Core 0.94 is the second beta of what was to be a new version of Red Hat Linux; visit the Fedora Project site for further information. The ISO images are available from the many Red Hat mirrors or via BitTorrent. Quick download links: severn-i386-disc1.iso (628MB), severn-i386-disc2.iso (638MB), severn-i386-disc3.iso (604MB).

The much awaited announcement by Red Hat about the future of its Linux distribution is out. The name is Fedora Project: "The goal of The Fedora Project is to work with the Linux community to build a complete, general purpose operating system exclusively from free software. Development will be done in a public forum. The project will produce time-based releases of Fedora Core about 2-3 times a year with a public release schedule. The Red Hat engineering team will continue to participate in the building of Fedora Core and will invite and encourage more outside participation than was possible in Red Hat Linux. By using this more open process, we hope to provide an operating system that uses free software development practices and is more appealing to the open source community. To learn more about the process, refer to About, the Objectives, and the FAQs." Read more...
