António Meireles has announced the availability of a new development build of Foresight Linux, version 0.9.8.2: "Following our 0.9.8 release we're proud to announce that Foresight Linux 0.9.8.2 is out. Release highlights are the usual bug fixes and package updates, including the latest stable gnome (2.16.1) package set and the latest Google Earth release, a revamped X.Org subsystem and a new default kernel (2.16.18). Also of note is the fact that this is the first release done after the launch of our issue tracker. Regarding X.Org, now AIGLX is activated by default and two new Use flags were introduced to smoothen the install of ATI and NVIDIA drivers, which conflicted with the default Mesa and xorg-server installs." A new version of Foresight Linux, a desktop-oriented distribution based on rPath Linux, has been released: "It has been a long hard road, but 0.9.2 ISOs are now posted. I will say they aren't perfect, but a huge jump from the previous ISOs released. What has changed? The GTK theme has been hacked to use colors that match our look better; default icon set is 'Tango'; stripped out stuff that folks won't even miss, which shaved 120MB off the 2nd CD; added laptop-tools, which includes some nice wireless drivers, NetworkManager, GNOME Power, and ndisgtk (GUI for configuring windows wireless drivers); convert back to using GNOME Systems Tools; package selection in the installer." More details can be found in the release announcement. Download (MD5): foresight-0.9.2-i386-disc1.iso (648MB) and foresight-0.9.2-i386-disc2.iso (236MB).

NEW • Reviews: First Look at Foresight Linux |

Mad Penguin has published a new review of Foresight Linux, a distribution based on rpath Linux and known for its advanced package management and interesting desktop features: "Foresight is a good demo distribution with potential of becoming a full-fledged desktop package. Conary seems like it has potential I suppose, but I'm not so sure we really need another package manager such as this. It doesn't seem all that groundbreaking to me or so different from everything else out there that it's necessary at all. Considering how the rest of the distro looks and acts so polished, it seems that package management isn't up to speed with the rest of the OS. Just my two cents of course. The developers could just as easily spend some time getting Conary/Yuck up to speed and the planets would align for them." The two-page review with screenshots starts here.

Foresight Desktop Linux has been upgraded to version 0.8.1: "This is mainly a service release to ensure better stability towards version 1.0. It fixes the firstboot problem, as well as some smaller bugs like an improved hardware detection via HAL. Of course, we updated nearly all packages (among them conary and mono) to live up our claim to be a bleeding-edge distribution. We also added a new application: Gnome-Art, a tool for browsing, downloading, and installing themes and wallpapers. In order to make Foresight Linux as beautiful as innovative, we also added a new GDM theme. Other artwork will follow." Here is the full release announcement.
