We need you to test it on as many x86 and x86_64 machines as you can and post bugs. The x86-x86_64 live DVD will work on x86 or x86_64 processors. Gentoo Linux 2008.0 has been released: "The 2008.0 final release is out! Code-named 'It's got what plants crave,' this release contains numerous new features, including an updated installer, improved hardware support, a complete rework of profiles, and a move to Xfce instead of GNOME on the live CD. Live DVDs are not available for x86 or amd64, although they may become available in the future. The 2008.0 release also includes updated versions of many packages already available in your ebuild tree. Highlights: updated installer - the installer now only performs networkless installations using the packages and ebuild tree on the Live CD; improved hardware support - moving to the 2.6.24 kernel added many new drivers for hardware released since the 2007.0 release; updated packages - Portage 2.1.4.4, a 2.6.24 kernel, Xfce 4.4.2, GCC 4.1.2 and glibc 2.6.1." The first development build of Gentoo Linux 2008.0 is out and ready for testing: "When we said 'soon,' even we didn't realize how soon it would be. 2008.0_beta1 is here. Your support and enthusiasm are greatly appreciated - thank you. You can help make 2008.0 amazing! Test out this beta and report any functionality issues you encounter. Since this is the first beta, we're looking only for bugs in functionality, not bugs in appearance such as desktop backgrounds or other artwork. We expect to release a second beta once your testing has helped us fix problems with this first beta. A migration to RPM was carefully considered again for this release, but in the end we decided to wait for the few remaining RPM-using distributions to migrate to the superior packaging format of ebuilds." Linux Journal has published an article about Gentoo Linux, its package management, and information on how to keep a Gentoo installation up-to-date: "I have a confession to make. I use Gentoo Linux. My colleagues at the various Linux User Group meetings I attend think I'm nuts. Everyone knows that Gentoo is a source-based Linux distribution. Gentoo's reputation (in large measure pushed by the people who develop the distribution) is that it's for people who want super crazy optimizations, and it really is suitable only for those who use desktops. In truth, Gentoo is ideal for a whole bunch of other, unexpected, reasons. Much to my surprise, people actually are using Gentoo in production environments for these very reasons." The full story.

Linux.com's Distribution Center has published a review of Gentoo Linux 2004.2: "Gentoo Linux is the BSD of GNU/Linux distributions; it's elegant and customizable and you know exactly what you're getting when you install it. No mystery programs, no packages that you have to deinstall because you'll never use, no clutter, and everything is customized to your needs. If you do it right, Gentoo is also faster than your average GNU/Linux distro because everything can be compiled with higher compiler optimizations. The 2004.2 edition of Gentoo Linux lacks the improvements I had hoped to see, but this is still the best community GNU/Linux distribution for desktop tinkerers. Some even say that it makes a good server, too." The 2-page review starts here.

"I've been wanting to try Gentoo. I hesitated to install it because I knew it would take three days since you have to compile your own software, and I assumed I would have lots of compilation errors to troubleshoot. But four of my friends have been running it at their workplaces and say they rarely get compilation errors - mirable dictu. Three of them are solidly convinced for Gentoo; the other is a little tired of having to wait for a package to compile. But everyone says you just run "emerge PACKAGE" in a shell window and leave it alone, and 90% of the time you end up with a flawlessly installed package. No mess, no fuss, just pure impact. The way Unix was meant to be. This article describes my experience installing Gentoo, some things I learned along the way, and describes the Gentoo features I found the most interesting." LXer has published a review of Gentoo Linux 2004.0, deployed as a server: "The customization and optimization does make a difference and gives you fine-tuned control over the final product. If you rely on a lot of third-party applications, however, you may be best served sticking with Red Hat Enterprise Linux or Fedora, but if all you want is a solid Linux system to operate your standard internet enabled services like LAMP, you can't do better than Gentoo Linux. I have not yet tried Gentoo out as a desktop, so currently I am only recommending it for server use. I hope in the next few weeks (or months) I will try X and see how I like it. Instead, he's been looking at informal frameworks like Python's PEP system, which has an open period of solicitation for new feature suggestions from users, and then a closed, fixed time period -- this is when the main Gentoo developers work on implementing what has been decided." Oh, and did I mention that Gentoo did shade Mandrake and Debian this time around!" LinuxWorld has taken up a task of reviewing Gentoo Linux: "Gentoo Linux is not really a distribution but a meta-distribution. You don't usually install pre-compiled binaries when you add software to a Gentoo system. You most often compile and build the binaries yourself, according to your own personal optimization and configuration settings. O'Reilly has published an introduction to the upcoming release of Gentoo Linux 1.4, written by none else than Gentoo's Chief Architect, Daniel Robbins: In past releases, the Gentoo Linux installation process involved building at least part of Gentoo Linux directly from source. For Gentoo Linux 1.4, we now offer a full binary Gentoo Linux "reference platform" that installs in minutes. We have clearly and carefully defined our binary reference platform to provide a set of reasonable build-time defaults for users who want to get Gentoo Linux up and running as quickly as possible. Thanks to the Gentoo Linux reference platform, a full installation of Gentoo Linux--including XFree86, GNOME, KDE and OpenOffice--can be completed in under an hour. Tinyminds interviews the creator and Chief Architect of Gentoo Linux: "Yes we do find that users are satisfied with their built-from-source packages; in fact, that is the reason why many are switching from binary-based distributions to Gentoo Linux. They want take advantage of the power and flexibility of free software, and they don't feel that the other distributions are allowing them to fully benefit from free software. Now, does compiling programs on your own system take longer than installing a binary? Yes, it does. For those in a rush, we offer pre-rolled base system tarballs that can simply be extracted to your hard drive. We will also begin offering pre-built binary packages for those who are willing to sacrifice some initial flexibility for speed of installation." The complete interview.

A new Gentoo review by pclinuxonline: "If someone were to ask, I'd highly recommend Gentoo Linux 1.2. Even to the novice. That is if its already installed or at the very least the novice has an elmer holding his/her hand during install/configuration. Configuration is pretty much all manual. Performance is impressive. Flexibility and ease of upgrade is outstanding. I think I will stay with Gentoo Linux for a while." The rest of the review is here. On a related note, the Gentoo web site has a few brief notices about the upcoming GCC3-based release, Gentoo's participation at LinuxWorld Expo and a link to its Install Guide for SPARC. OSNews reviews Gentoo Linux: "There have been many articles as of late about the so called "source" distributions of Linux. Articles about "rpm hell" and how to get out of it. While I have been using Red Rat since the first release (and do have some things for and against it) there is no distribution that will please all of the people all of the time. Then again, that is what makes an OS like Linux nice, in my opinion. Choices. Today, Gentoo Linux is my choice." Read the full story.

LinuxPlanet has revisited the Gentoo Linux distribution with a new review entitled Gentoo Linux 1.2: Getting Better Every Day: "Gentoo is still quite a young distribution, and it already has quite a following. I find that I do hope for the sakes of the lazy among us, that some of the installation process will be automated in the future. If not, well, a fussy installation process is a small price to pay for one of the fastest Linux distributions out there." This link will take you to the comprehensive 5-page review.

Gentoo Linux 1.2 - not yet officially announced, but already available from Gentoo mirrors. As usual, there is a very small ISO image containing the bare minimum to build a complete Gentoo Linux OS - gentoo-ix86-1.2.iso (16MB) and there is also a pre-compiled binary ISO for i686 processors with a basic working Linux system on it - gentoo-i686-1.2.iso (135MB). Gentoo's news page hasn't been updated for nearly a month, but the mirrors have sprouted a new 1.3a_test directory as well, which, as the name suggests, is a testing branch. OSNews reports that this release makes Gentoo the first Linux distribution to use GCC 3.1 as the default compiler. It seems that Gentoo's Changelog provides the most up-to-date information about the current development activities.

An interview with Gentoo's Daniel Robbins by OSNews: "Gentoo is so far the big Linux surprise this year. Its 1.0 release took the Linux world by storm and converted a huge number of power users and developers from the well-known Linux distros they were using, to the lightweight Gentoo Linux. While its installation process is not for the faint of heart, it pays back the user with a highly optimized system. As a result, Gentoo is dubbed the 'fastest Linux distro' to date." Since its launch, interest in Gentoo Linux has been very high, which is reflected by an ever increasing number of reviews and related web sites. Here is the latest pick. From iMacLinux comes a review of Gentoo's PPC port: "After a week of 'emerge' power on my iBook, I have a fully working distribution, tailored to my very personal needs and which will now be relatively easy to keep updated permanently. No more waiting for new distribution releases, the latest packages will always be available through Portage. Thus Gentoo has won over my heart and already has replaced my SuSE 7.3 install." The complete review is here. Another great resource for all those who intend to try this distribution on their PowerPCs is the newly established Gentoo PPC web site. Finally, a brand new Gentoo Linux User Forum has been set up to help with all sorts of questions and inform about the latest in the Gentoo community. |

LinuxPlanet has a review of Gentoo Linux 1.1a (just when you thought that you've read all about this distribution): "I think this distribution is one to watch for the developer community. It's got some bugs to iron out but the Portage tool in and of itself makes adding packages from source pretty simple, when it works! If you're a developer or are just very fond of distributions where you basically roll your own, then you might want to check this one out." Very good in features and speed, but scores less in areas of usability and value; overall 4 stars out of five. Read the full review here.

OSNews has a review of Gentoo Linux 1.0: "Gentoo's advantages are speed, custom bleeding edge kernel/app-base and a good package system. On its downside, you will find the steep learning curve of having to maintain everything "by hand," quite a number of bugs lying around everywhere in the system, including some security concerns (some are already addressed with the release of Gentoo 1.1a a few days ago). However, if you are a power user or developer who do not afraid of the command line and is determined to squash every little bit of your CPU cycles, then go for Gentoo." Excellent hardware support, speed and features, lower rating on ease of use and installation - overall 8.2 out of 10. Read the full review with pretty screenshots here.

Also be sure to read our new Portage Manual to get up to speed with the new Gentoo Linux 1.0+ features." Not much more to add except the usual quick download link to the install ISO: gentoo-ix86-1.1a.iso (16MB) and a reminder that our Gentoo page has been updated to reflect this brand new release.

Gentoo Linux 1.0 announcement: "The 1.0 release features the following nifty new things: Portage 1.8.9 - lots of new features, tweaks and refinements, core system updates, glibc 2.2.5 and new kernel 2.4.19-pre2-ac4-XFS" - the full announcement is here. Gentoo Linux is a source-based distribution with a BSD-style portage system to build your own binary files from source code. There is an ISO image for Pentium Pro systems - gentoo-i686-1.0.iso (103MB) available for download, but the proper way to your Gentoo Linux system is to compile all packages from sources (see the installation instructions). Our Gentoo page lists the currently available source packages, rather than the binary packages found on the above ISO image. Useful links: Gentoo Linux home page, installation instructions, new Portage manual, FAQs, screenshots and mailing lists. Also a little pre-announcement: watch out for a review of this distribution here on DistroWatch within the next few weeks! And while I am on the subject of reviews, check out this brief overview of installing Gentoo Linux, published by AMDPower.
