Minimal Linux Live
Minimal Linux Live is a tiny Linux distribution which is designed to be built from scratch using a collection of automated shell scripts. Minimal Linux Live offers a core environment with just the Linux kernel, GNU C library and Busybox userland utilities. This default build is just 7MB in size. Additional software can be included in the ISO image at build time using a well documented configuration file. Minimal Linux Live can be downloaded as a pre-built image, built from scratch or run in a web browser using a JavaScript emulator.

Hot on the heals of the KDE 6 MegaRelease announcement comes an updated build of KDE neon. The latest version, labelled as 20240228, continues to be based on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, but it integrates the brand-new KDE releases, including Plasma 6, KDE Frameworks 6 and all the applications from KDE Gear 24.02: "Today KDE has made its biggest release ever, never before in the 25-year history of the project have we announced so many new products at the same time, but it brings the newly-refreshed base to keep our software foundation strong. KDE neon User edition has now been updated with KDE Frameworks 6, Plasma 6 and all the apps from KDE Gear 24.02. You can upgrade through Discover or grab the newest installable ISO build. If you just want to give it a try then give the Docker images a go." A bug that prevents users from logging off, rebooting or shutting down the system directly from the application menu has been reported in the KDE bug tracker. Here is the brief release announcement with a screenshot of the default desktop. Download: neon-user-20240228-1346.iso (1,750MB, SHA256, signature, torrent, pkglist). |

Jonathan Riddell has announced that the KDE neon distribution has been upgraded and re-based to Ubuntu's latest long-term support release, version 18.04 "Bionic Beaver". KDE neon is a desktop-focused Linux distribution that provides the very latest KDE Plasma desktop on top of Ubuntu's base system. The users of KDE neon are encouraged to upgrade to the latest version via Ubuntu's built-in upgrade utility. From the release announcement: "The KDE neon team is proud to announce the rebase of our packages onto Ubuntu 18.04 LTS 'Bionic Beaver. We encourage all users to upgrade now. The installable ISOs and Docker images have also been updated to run on 18.04. KDE neon is a project to deliver KDE's wonderful suite of software quickly. We use modern DevOps techniques to automatically build, QA and deploy our packages. We work directly with the KDE community rather than staying far away in a separate project. Our packages are built on the latest Ubuntu LTS edition and today we have moved to their new 18.04 release. This means our users can get newer drivers and third-party packages. There is an upgrade process from the previous 16.04 LTS base which we have spent the last few months writing and running QA on to ensure it runs smoothly." Hot on the heals of KDE's Plasma Desktop 5.8, released yesterday, comes a new version of KDE neon, a fast-evolving Ubuntu-based distribution built by KDE and Kubuntu developer Jonathan Riddell: "The KDE neon builders have been firing away this afternoon and Plasma 5.8 LTS is now available in the User edition archive. If you don't already have KDE neon installed you can grab the latest User edition ISO image to install it on your hard disk. A feature I've been wanting for ages in KDE is the ability to install plugins from within the application. This was made more urgent when we added Gwenview in KDE neon and had to choose between either an empty Plugins menu or adding a dependency on Kipi Plugins which brought in Konqueror and several KDElibs 4 tools. So I got round to coding the feature based on discussions I'd had previously and work on the Samba browser in Dolphin I'd done before." Continue to the release announcement for more information and screenshots, and see also the Plasma 5.8 announcement for a detailed list of new features and more screenshots. Following the release of KDE's Plasma Desktop 5.7 earlier today, a new version of KDE neon is now also available. KDE neon is distribution based on the latest stable Kubuntu, but it is developed at a more rapid pace and it features a cutting-edge desktop stack, including the latest Plasma. From the release announcement: "KDE neon 5.7. When version numbers merge to a singularity we reach the perfection that is KDE neon 5.7. Featuring the newly released Qt 5.7 and the freshly built KDE Plasma 5.7. If you're using KDE neon 'User' edition you can just update as normal. Those who have yet to allow it to take over their computer can download the images to fix that pronto." KDE Plasma 5.7 delivers a large number of improvements, including better support for kiosk, much improved integration with the Wayland windowing system and a new system tray and task manager; see the Plasma 5.7 announcement for further details and screenshots.
