Knopperdisk is a Gentoo-based distribution designed to run from a USB storage device. After exactly one and a half years' development, a new version was just released. One particular among the many changes: "You always had to enter the USB device during the boot so the initrd would know which device to mount which would function as the real root file system. Instead of initrd now initramfs is used, and you no longer have to enter the USB device. It's taken care of automatically for you, by scanning all the available SCSI devices, trying to mount them and check whether the Knopperdisk image is present or not." Find more details on the project's news page and the package list. Download: knopperdiskusb-0.4.0.tar.bz2 (62.4MB).

Knopperdisk 0.3.0 has been released: "Here it is, Knopperdisk 0.3.0! Thanks to some people on the gentoo-embedded IRC channel I was able to drop libiconv and gettext and thus saving some space. I also decided to drop support for ext2 formatted USB devices since this only complicates things. The long awaited feature to boot directly from the USB device has been added and mostly because of this I decided to make this release version 0.3.0. Changelog: kernel 2.6.11; added support for USB input devices; uclibc upgraded to version 0.9.27; added bind-tools, clamav, iptables; several common Gentoo updates." More details can be found on the distribution's news page. Download: knopperdiskusb-0.3.0.tar.bz2 (40MB).

Knopperdisk 0.2.1 has been released: "Here goes another one in the 0.2.x range, several packages have been updated and there are some additions as well. Additions include: mc (midnight commander), Mutt (e-mail client) and Samba (file sharing). There's also an improvement in the shutdown/reboot process since I adjusted the scripts to unmount filesystems at shutdown a bit to be more sane. Booting directly from the USB stick is planned for version 0.3.0, so for those who are waiting for that feature, please be patient." See the announcement of the project's news page. Download the USB edition from here: knopperdiskusb-0.2.1.tar.bz2 (41.8MB). Knopperdisk is a Gentoo-based Linux distribution designed for USB pen drives.

For all fans of Linux distributions designed for USB pen drives, here is a new toy called Knopperdisk, based on Gentoo Linux. Version 0.2.0 was released yesterday: "Finally, a new release with a lot of improvements. A snapshot of some of them: kernel 2.6.10; expanded the list of supported hardware; syslinux 2.11 for booting; using SquashFS for the root file system image instead of cloop, which actually results in a smaller image while there's more data on it; added CVS software; a lot of upgraded software (udev, hotplugging, coreutils and more); no more nasty errors while shutting down and rebooting! All this made me decide to make this release the final 0.2.0." Read the announcement on the project's news page. Download: knopperdiskusb-0.2.0.tar.bz2 (29.1MB).
