Klaus Knopper has announced the release of KNOPPIX 8.6, a new stable version of the project's Debian-based live CD with a choice of LXDE (default desktop), KDE Plasma 5.14 and GNOME 3.30. Interestingly, the distribution comes with a custom init system called "knoppix-autoconfig" which replaces systemd present in earlier public releases. (There is no mention of this in the release notes; however, the author's rationale is explained in this article of the April 2019 edition of Germany's Linux Magazine.) "Version 8.6 of KNOPPIX is based on Debian 10 'buster', with some packages from Debian 'testing' and 'unstable' for newer graphics drivers or desktop software packages. It uses Linux kernel 5.2.5 and X.Org 7.7 (core 1.20.4) for supporting current computer hardware. Both 32- bit and 64- bit kernel supporting both old and new computers, the 64-bit edition also supporting systems with more than 4GB of RAM and chroot to 64-bit installations for system rescue tasks. The bootloader will start the 64-bit kernel automatically if a 64-bit-capable CPU is detected." Japan's Alpha Systems has released Accelerated KNOPPIX 1.0, a fast-booting variant of the popular KNOPPIX live CD. By re-arranging the Cloop file system block and optimising the hardware detection and configuration step, the developers have succeeded in reducing the CD boot time to under 60 seconds, while maintaining the full functionality of the distribution. More details with illustrations of the technology (which, incidentally, is released under the GPL) can be found on the project's home page. Accelerated KNOPPIX version 1.0, released yesterday, can be downloaded from here: Accelerated-KNX_20060228.iso (692MB, MD5); also available via BitTorrent.

This is a great story of a non-technical user trying out KNOPPIX and falling in love with it - to the point that she is ready to give up on Windows completely: "I've been impressed and happily surprised at how much fun it has been to use and learn KNOPPIX and other Linux software. Even with my systems that have a lot of old hardware (which would be all of them), I've been amazed at how much is recognized immediately when I experiment with installing different operating systems. I'm still running Windows 2K Pro on my main system, but I am slowly whittling away at the need to have it at all. So if you think it's too hard for you, think again, and give KNOPPIX a whirl. If I can do it, anyone can. And that's the truth." Read the rest of the story at Groklaw.

Ars Technica has published a 3-page story about the popular KNOPPIX live CD, including an interview with the author of KNOPPIX Hacks Kyle Rankin, and a developer's corner with tools, tips and tweaks: "There is a common misconception among people who have heard of KNOPPIX that it is only for Linux users. This perception couldn't be further from the truth. KNOPPIX, as demonstrated by the author, is an extremely useful tool regardless of your preferred operating system. This book is for anyone who has had to fix the computer of friends or family; the system administrator who has ever had to resuscitate a lifeless machine; even the average home user who's curious to try something new without replacing what they already have." It is safe to say that the Debian-based KNOPPIX live CD has raised the bar of Linux distribution standards to a new level, especially with its automatic hardware detection and on-the-fly decompression. KNOPPIX is commonly used as an emergency rescue disk, as a Linux demo CD, as a tool to test a new computer before purchase or as a utility to read password-protected Microsoft Word documents on a Windows partition. It can even be used as a full-blown Linux distribution for every-day tasks. Robert Storey explains the reason why KNOPPIX has been given a permanent home on his computer's hard drive and why he never leaves home without it.

KNOPPIX.net is featuring a review of KNOPPIX for new users: "Once KNOPPIX has fully loaded itself, you are looking at something which should not seem too exotic for any Windows user. By default KNOPPIX loads the KDE desktop manager which is very intuitive and easy to use. On the bottom of your screen, the task bar allows you to launch a number of applications and if you click on the 'K' on the lower left you will have a menu not unlike the one you are used to. Play around, try a couple of things, and get used to how everything is organized. The only thing which will look very different to you is the application with the icon "sea-shell in front of the screen" on your task bar: this launches the 'Konsole' terminal emulator." PcTechTalk interviews Klaus Knopper of KNOPPIX: "The KNOPPIX CD edition has a little problem with disk space, mostly caused by well-meant suggestions about useful programs to include. Software tends to continuously grow, so, since the CD is already full with 1.8GB of software (compressed, physical space 700MB), I have to remove some software on every new release. This is sad, because once you got used to a program, even if it is "just a game" for testing the graphics and sound capabilities of new hardware, you will miss it once it is gone, and of course many people complain if their favorite program is gone in a new release. Fabian Franz, author of some of the packages on KNOPPIX, is currently working on a modularized version of KNOPPIX, based on Debian meta packages and KNOPPIX-specific packages. So, you could use a build system to build your own version and include just the packages you want." The rest of the interview is here.

OSNews talks to Klaus Knopper about his CD-ROM based Linux distribution known as KNOPPIX: "How does the KNOPPIX boot process differ from a conventional hard drive based Linux install? Klaus Knopper: A Ramdisk is used as root file system. The first part consists in actually identifying the CD-ROM (loading SCSI drivers) where the CD is located, and mounting the compressed loopback file KNOPPIX/KNOPPIX. Then a script is run for identifying all supported hardware components, generating links in /dev and config files. After that, the boot process does not differ much from a harddisk-installed version." The four-part interview starts here.

Unlike other distributions, KNOPPIX does not need to be installed on a computer's hard disk - it runs directly from the CD. All you need to do is to place it into your CD-ROM drive and restart the computer. KNOPPIX is one of those miracles that clearly demonstrate the superiority of open source software over proprietary systems. Do yourself a favour and download the ISO image: KNOPPIX_V3.1-31-10-2002-EN.iso (697MB). Burn it onto a CD, boot from it and be prepared to be amazed. A full working Linux system with KDE, GNOME, development and server software running directly from the CD, but you wouldn't even notice if it weren't for the noise of the spinning disk. Most importantly, give the CD to a friend who has never tried Linux and stress that no installation is required. While the concept is not new, the implementation is outstanding. And if you, like many others, happen to fall in love with the Debian-based KNOPPIX, it can be installed on your hard drive in a few easy steps, as per these instructions in English, French or German.
