The LibreELEC development team has announced the release of LibreELEC 12.0.0, a major new update of project's multi-platform Linux distribution featuring the Kodi media centre. The new release ships with Linux kernel 6.6.28 and Kodi 21.0: "LibreELEC 12.0 has released as final release, bringing Kodi (Omega) 21.0. With the new release cycle we changed many devices to 64-bit architectures, including Rasberry Pi 4 and 5. If using Widevine DRM (required for various copy-protected video add-ons like Prime Video, Netflix) on one of these devices and updating from LibreELEC 11, Widevine DRM will need to be re-installed on these devices due to the changed architecture. LibreELEC 11.0 installs will not automatically update, but you can manually update. LibreELEC installs from before LibreELEC 10.0 must make a clean install due to the Python 3 changes since Kodi 19. The Generic image runs the same GBM/V4L2 graphics stack we have long used with ARM devices." See the release announcement and the changelog for further details. LibreELEC 12 is available for Raspberry Pi, Allwinner, Rockchip, Amlogic, NXP and generic x86_64 devices, as well as OVA images for VirtualBox. The developers of LibreELEC, a project that develops a multi-platform Linux distribution featuring the Kodi media centre, have released the final build of the 11.x series. Version 11.0.4 updates Kodi to version 20.2: "The final stable version of LibreELEC 11.0.4 has been released, bringing Kodi (Nexus) 20.2 with additional fixes. With the final release of LibreELEC 11 we are adding experimental RPi 5 support. The focus of RPi 5 development is on Kodi 21, which will be released in early 2024. The only known issue so far is that updating the EEPROM is not yet supported in the LE setting (run rpi-eeprom-update -a from the shell). Changes since 11.0.3: Kodi updated to 20.2 with additional fixes; Linux kernel updated to 6.1.68. Raspberry Pi - 50/60fps H264 HW decoding may need force_turbo=1 or core_freq_min=500 in config.txt to avoid AV-sync-issues/skipping. Kodi at RPi4 runs in 4096x2160 instead of 3840x2160 on 4k TVs after fresh installation. Configure Kodi as described at the Wiki and optionally add hdmi_enable_4kp60=1 to config.txt and enable HDMI UltraHD Deep Color in your TV's HDMI port configuration to get 4kp60 modes." See the release announcement and the changelog for more information. LibreELEC 11.04 is available for Raspberry Pi, Allwinner, Rockchip, Amlogic, NXP and generic x86_64 devices, as well as OVA images for VirtualBox. LibreELEC 11.0.0, a major new version from the project that develops a multi-platform Linux distribution centred around the Kodi media centre, has been released. The new version updates Kodi to version 20.0 and re-introduces support for older Amlogic devices: "The final stable version of LibreELEC 11, bringing Kodi 'Nexus' 20.0, has been released. With the new release cycle, we add a Generic-Legacy image supporting NVIDIA cards, Chrome Browser add-ons and older hardware. We also re-introduce support for older Amlogic devices (S905, S905X/D, S912). LibreELEC 10.0 installs will not automatically update, but you can update manually. Older LibreELEC installs must make a clean install due to the Python 3 changes since Kodi 19. The Generic image now runs the same GBM/V4L2 graphics stack we have long used with ARM platforms. It now supports HDR with recent AMD and Intel GPUs. We have added a Generic-Legacy image that runs the older X11 graphics stack used in LE v7-v10. You can update between the GBM and X11 images without issues." See the release announcement and the changelog for further information. LibreELEC provides IMG images for Raspberry Pi, Allwinner, Rockchip, Amlogic, NXP and generic x86_64 devices, as well as OVA images for VirtualBox. Version 10 of LibreELEC, a specialist Linux distribution that runs the Kodi media centre on many popular minicomputers, has been released: "The final version of LibreELEC 10.0.0 has been released, bringing Kodi (Matrix) 19.1 to LibreELEC users. Users of LibreELEC 10 Beta or RC1 get an automatic update to the final version. LibreELEC 9.2 setups will not be automatically updated, you will need to manually update. We can offer stable and good working versions for Allwinner, Generic and Rockchip devices. The RPi4 is also in good shape but the codebase is rather new, so it is not polished yet (keep reading for details). Despite a long development period, there is still a major bug remaining. When you use profiles, LibreELEC's Settings Add-on can crash while switching to another profile. The issue is known, but we have currently no fix for it. So if you depend on profiles, you cannot properly use LibreELEC 10." Read the full release announcement for more details and known issues. LibreELEC is "just enough OS" to run the Kodi media centre. LibreELEC is a Linux distribution built to run Kodi on current and popular hardware. The project's latest development snapshot includes a new version of widevine: "LibreELEC 10 Beta5 is out of the box compatible with the new widevine version (4.10.2252.0 or newer) and no manual changes are required anymore to make it work." The release announcement mentions new development branch has also dropped support for older versions of the Raspberry Pi series of computers: "Kernel changes for RPi4 users combined with no release for RPi2/3 users and discontinued support for RPi0/1 users means signifant changes in the user experience (Raspberry Pi users are a combined 80% of our active installed base). We are pretty confident RPi4 users will like the update since it brings HBR audio and initial HDR video support, but it’s still a big change." LibreELEC is "just enough OS" to run the Kodi media centre. LibreELEC is a Linux distribution built to run Kodi on a variety of current and popular hardware. The latest development snapshot introduces a number of changes to Python support and includes some experimental changes which are being tested across a range of architectures. "LibreELEC 10.0 BETA 1 is released! bringing Kodi (Matrix) v19.0 to LibreELEC users. As discussed in the recent Upcoming Changes blog post it, the 10.0 release is a disruptive and limited hardware release. If you have not read the blog post - please do - because we are not releasing images for all hardware. In summary: this is a stable release for Generic (x86_64 PCs). Stable-Beta for Allwinner and Rockchip. Stable “Alpha” for Raspberry Pi 4 as the code is still very new. RPi 2/3 are still in development targeting an LE10.2 release. RPi 0/1 are discontinued. All others hardware is still in development and not in a state for formal releases." Further information is available in the distribution's release announcement. LibreELEC is a minimal operating system for running the Kodi media centre. The LibreELEC project has published a new development snapshot in the lead-up to LibreELEC 9.2. The new snapshot includes partial support for the Raspberry Pi 4. Earlier versions of the Raspberry Pi are still supported. "LibreELEC 9.2 for Generic x86/64 and Raspberry Pi 0/1/2/3 devices is a solid beta quality release. Raspberry Pi 4B images are more 'late stage Alpha' and are not feature complete or perfect. Normal LibreELEC testing rules apply; if you do not want to experiment on your family’s primary entertainment system - please stick with your current version and wait for the final/stable release. If you do want to experiment - please be prepared to submit log files and work with developers to hunt down problems and test solutions. It would be nice to have the 4B running the latest mainline kernel as other devices in LibreELEC 9.2, but adding support for an all-newSoC chipset is a huge effort and the Pi Foundation needed to align initial 4B software with the current Raspbian release to maximise compatibility with existing softwar and to keep the workload sensible. Generic x86/64 devices are running Linux 5.1, while Raspberry Pi devices (0/1/2/3/4) are using Linux 4.19 with some new/extra code." LibreELEC is a minimal Linux distribution for running the Kodi media centre software. The LibreELEC team has published a new release, LibreELEC 9.0.2, which introduces new default firewall tools for protection on public networks, moves system updates to their own menu, and makes it possible to change secure shell passwords. There are some new features too: "LibreELEC 9.0.2 (Leia) has arrived, based upon Kodi 18.2. The 9.0.2 release contains many changes and refinements to user experience and a complete overhaul of the underlying OS core to improve stability and extend hardware support. Kodi 18 also brings new features like Kodi Retroplayer and DRM support that (equipped with an appropriate add-on) allows Kodi to unofficially stream content from services like Netflix and Amazon. Changes since LibreELEC 9.0.1: updated Kodi to 18.2; updated Linux kernel to 4.19.36; fixed TBS 5520SE tuning; fixed Zotac remotes; fixed pvr.hts (Tvheadend) timeshift (partly). Settings add-on: changeable SSH passwords; default firewall (iptables) with simple configurations for home and public networks; updates are moved to their own menu, other options are cleaned up a little; Safe Mode boot when Kodi experiences start-up problems." LibreELEC is "just enough OS" to run the Kodi media centre. LibreELEC is a Linux distribution built to run Kodi on current and popular hardware. The project's latest release, LibreELEC 9.0, includes a number of security improvements. "Changeable SSH passwords and a default firewall configuration have been added to combat the increasing number of HTPC installs that can be found on the public internet. The increase is partly due to simple maths; our userbase has grown so the number of users inappropriately exposing their HTPC to the internet has also grown. The static password for libreelec is present on most/all password dictionary lists so it’s important we start encouraging users to change it (the first-run wizard will prompt when SSH is enabled). More people are using VPN services for privacy without realising this exposes SSH/SMB/Web services. To combat this problem we have added simple firewall configurations for Home/Public networks; the Home configuration blocks inbound connections from non-private networks, e.g. traffic from the Internet to the public IP address used with the VPN connection." LibreELEC is a minimal operating system designed to run the Kodi media centre. LibreELEC runs on desktop computers, laptops and ARM-powered devices such as Raspberry Pi computers. "Team LibreELEC celebrates its second birthday (and international Pi-Day) with the release of LibreELEC (Krypton) v8.2.4 which brings minor bug-fixes and new firmware to support the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ hardware announced this morning. Highlights of the new Pi hardware include: A 1.4GHz 64-bit quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 CPU; dual-band 802.11ac wireless LAN and Bluetooth 4.2; faster Ethernet (Gigabit Ethernet over USB 2.0); power-over-Ethernet support (with separate PoE HAT); improved PXE network and USB mass-storage booting; improved thermal management. Improvements to WiFi stability and performance on the 3B+ are noticeable. In private testing over the last two months we have been able to stream typical HD media over a 5GHz network at 105Mb/sec without the buffering and dropouts seen with the previous (2.4GHz only) model, and even 2.4GHz speeds reached 50Mb/sec where the 3B struggled to reach 35Mb/sec." The LibreELEC project develops a minimal operating system which is dedicated to running the Kodi media centre. The project's latest release, LibreELEC 8.2.0, introduces changes to Samba, dropping the SMB1 protocol and supporting SMB2 and SMB3. "The Kodi SMB client now defaults to SMB3 connections but can fail to negotiate SMB3 with old Samba (NAS) versions. A new option in Kodi Settings > Services > SMB client > allows SMB2 or SMB1 to be forced for compatibility with legacy SMB servers. The embedded Samba server defaults to and supports only SMB2/SMB3 connections. The LibreELEC Settings add-on allows the minimum protocol version to be changed, e.g. to enable SMB1 for compatibility with legacy SMB clients. It also supports GUI configuration of WORKGROUP name. Samba detects v3 /storage/.config/samba.conf configurations and ignores them to avoid the Samba service failing on startup. If this happens Samba starts with a default v4 configuration. Custom Samba configurations must be updated to use the new Samba 4.x base template (samba.conf.sample)." Further information is available in the project's release announcement.
